  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

The 2011 BMW 5-series only offers the 8-speed transmission on their
V-6 RWD model, the AWD models and V-8 only offer the 6-speed transmission.

What does BMW know that Hyundai does not

Because you read about a Hyundai 8 speed transmission on the internet, and perhaps magazines, IT MUST BE TRUE.

BMW uses a straight six not a v6.

Go 8 speed! yea!!!
just build it so it doesn't have to be rebuilt every 60k miles

Don't confuse him with facts.

BacktoHyundaibychoice wether or not the BMW 3.0 is a straight six or a V-6 and wether or not I am a BMW
mechanic as you seem to be is not the topic or the point of this thread but I am sure you already knew that didn't you?
Sure you did! Didn't you?
P.S. can i hang out with you?

I'm serious, I want 8 speed auto, wish I had AWD, too.

You start an awful lot of threads, originally I thought, because you were considering the Gen and wanted info. Everything from "what's your favorite color" to "what's your biggest complaint". And then there are the spy shot threads and threads like this. I'm just trying to figure out what your deal is: that you'll buy a white Gen but only if it has an 8 speed and tail tips like a Lexus?
Sorry, you're just confusing to me. I'll ignore things from now on.

I think I agree with AWD here in the snowbelt, but not sure about the 8 versus 6. I think it was Mark888 who opined that he'd trust the ZF trans used in the 4.6 over a homegrown 8 since the ZF has been used for years by BMW and MB (I think). Also, almost every review talks about the perfect mating with the Tau.
He'll if I know, what's the attraction to you?

I started looking to replace my company car about 2 months ago, the lease ends on December 12, and quickly found the Hyundai Genesis. But very soon after I read about the 2011 refresh and decided I wanted to wait for that car which became the 2012.
Now I am not so sure that I want to wait but I have decided to get the Genesis V-8 probably sterling blue. Did you really want to know all that?
And yes I am learning more about the car at this forum.

Are you saying that the tranny used in the 2009 v8 is used in the BMW? I know the tranny is German, nice to know it is also used in a BMW :)

I like the idea of 8 speeds because I believe it adds to the vehicle's performance.
I have not researched the matter, nor have I studied the benefits of different transmissions, I just feel that the 8 speed will benefit the driving experience, but fear that it may be a maintenance headache.

Yep, that's what I'm saying. Possibly Mercedes too. That's why I don't want to mess with a good thing. Not saying Hyundai can't produce a tranny on their own, just saying I'm happy with what I have.

I think with the fwd 6 spd auto , the Tau V8 and the new gen 4cyl, Hyundai probably has the engineering resources to do a good reliable 8 Spd auto. BMW uses the 6 spd Turbohydramatic from GM in the 1, 3, X1, and X3 currently. The 6 and 8 spd ZF transmissions are for the 5, 7, 6, X5 and X6. I would guess that the only reason that the 8 spd is not universally used has more to do with ZF's production capability than torque capability. ZF supplies transmissions to all of the major auto manufacturers and the 8spd is slated for several applications. It just takes time to fill the pipeline with a new design work out application mapping and ensure it will be reliable. Using the 8 spd in low torque applications first boosts the fuel economy and performance feel of the smaller engines more than it does on the bigger engines.

(Hope this does not post twice - my cat just walked over my keyboard):mad::mad::(

The ZF 6HP26 is also used in the 2004 thru 2011 Jaguar XJ and the 2009 thru 2011 Jag XF.

Great transmission except no dipstick to check fluid. Also, the price of the fluid from Hyundai is $75. a quart. (Yes $75. - what are they, CRAZY?) The same fluid from Jaguar is also costly, however they sell it by the Pint (half quart). Don't know about buying from the German Brand dealers. The procedure to check and/or replace the fluid in the Genesis 4.6 is identical to the procedure to check and/or replace in the 2004 thru 2009 XJ. Don't know about the 2010/2011 XJ or 2009/2011 XF. My buddy with a 2005 XJR (no longer in warranty) changed his fluid with Mobil-1 Fully Synthetic ATF and it works great in this transmission, however don't you do it while your Genesis is in warranty, because the ZF transmission fluid is clear, and all other fluids are red, so if you ever had a problem with the transmission while still in warranty, they would decline the warranty.

BTW, please note that the 6 speed transmission used in the 3.8 is the Aisin Warner 6 speed, completly different than the ZF 6 speed. I am not a fan of Aisin transmissions, which is one of the reasons I chose the 4.6 over the 3.8.

The transmission (5 speed) in my last Mercedes E500 was sealed as was the engine. The computer check the oil level and transmission fluid's temp. My Vette also has a sealed transmission (6 speed). This is becoming more common. No dip sticks don't bother me any more.

I don't think they are "sealed". The fluid has to be changed.

They are sealed but not for life. As mentioned they do need servicing at around 60,000 miles. Buunch of advertising hogwash. I know, my other car is a MB SL. Just go over to the MB world forums and do a search for sealed tranny. ;)
