  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

3.3T Jerky auto transmission (hard downshifts while braking)

I know, that's the risk. I don't even know what I want - just not another Genesis. I'm in Florida and inventory is also light. My wife is home for a couple weeks around the holidays so I can use hers while I look.

I hope it works out for you. You're the real test lol, if the new transmission doesn't fix it there is no fix...
New transmission has arrived and it’s being installed on the 11th.

Can you find out what the actual problem is with the transmission? I don't know if the dealer even looks inside but would be good to know.

Quick question, does this transmission problem only happen with the 3.3 engine? I'm asking because I drove a 2.0 loaner yesterday and it didn't have that problem at all, the drive was very smooth even in sport/sport+. But the car was new and it only had around 1500 miles on it.

Mine is a 3.3 AWD. Did you like that 2.0? I’ve never driven one, but I’d be willing to change if it doesn’t feel sluggish.

Honestly I was surprised by how fast it is, of course it doesn't compare to the 3.3 but it's still fast nonetheless. The one I've driven was AWD as well.

I just drove it for a few mins just to see the difference, the drive was VERY smooth without any transmission braking at all, it was amazing.

The one thing I didn't like though was the sound of the engine, I am not sure why but it sounded like an old truck, even without revving the engine, I don't know if there was a problem with that specific vehicle or not, I'm assuming not because the car barely had 1500 on it, I just found the engine sound very weird and not nice honestly.

Thanks for that info. Maybe the active sound design system, if that car even has it, was set to a different level. Just goes to show, one persons fake engine noise piped into the car to sound like a sporty car can would like an old truck to another :)

Ohhh that could be it, because it did sound very weird to me and a bit unnatural haha even my 3.3 was quieter unless the I'm hitting the gas hard.

The 2.0 has a different transmission model number(A8LR1). AFAIK, it is identical except that the transmission on the 3.3 (A8TR1) is built to handle the additional torque.

How sure are you that these can reset adaptives? and how hard it to reset for someone who doesnt fix cars?
I might just get one of these if they work. They do cost alot but I think you can recoup 85 to 90 % of the cost if you sell it in the future.

also what about MX808 version? there are so many version its hard to figure out which ones is for G70 2019
You can check on Autel's website to see which one's support the adaptive reset.

I use 'adaptive' in the function/subfunction area.

The MX808 wont do it. I've searched all of the ones available on Amazon and the MP808 was the cheapest one that did it from what I could find.

I came across this when searching for the relearn process.
Maybe you guys can try this method to re-learn shift patterns once the adaptive values are reset:
**APS = gas pedal (Accelerator Position Sensor)
**SBW = Shift By Wire

how hard is to carry out the process with MP808? I am just trying to understand the complexity level

Not hard at all. You follow the same procedure that's been mentioned in some of the posts on this thread.

If you need any help you can always shoot me a message.

Note to anyone that gets one of these tools to do the reset: MAKE SURE TO COMPLETE THE LEARNING PROCESS AFTERWARDS.

I did this, and knock on wood, the rough shifting has not returned yet. I know it has only been 4 months, but this is longer than the last time I had the reset done by the dealer.

rmod provided the chart for the process, however the tool needs to be connected when doing the process. It'll walk you through it step by step, and tell you if you failed (ie too much throttle). It's pretty idiot proof.

I was interested in doing that until I saw the price tag :( it really sucks that Genesis isn't bothered to implement a fix on this, especially that it seems to be software related.

I know people have been trying Genesis dealerships to look at harsh downshifting problems of our transmission with little success. It looks like most of the time we are told that the issue cannot be replicated and transmission functions as intended.
Has anyone tried bringing this issue to an independent transmission garage for diagnosis? This can’t be too expensive. Would harsh downshifting be concluded as normal operation by a transmission garage?
What would be Genesis reaction if an owner would show up armed with documentation diagnosing their transition as faulty?
Would they as easily brush you off?

I have a 2.0 and can confirm it still happens. After doing as much reading as I have it doesn't seem like this is the same in every vehicle. It seems like some are worse than others - perhaps faulty transmissions or tuning. If every car was like mine I can't imagine there wouldn't be more complaints.

Thanks for the updates! Hopefully it's done by now?!
It took a while for it to get finished. The Genesis master tech who was supposed to work on it was gone for two weeks - possibly Covid related. I’ve had the car back for almost a week now and I can report that the car now stops nice and smooth and there are no unexpected jerks or noises. It appears to have worked!! I really appreciate the work they put into it, because it was not an easy or inexpensive repair with an AWD car.

That’s great news. I wonder what was exactly broken in the transmission. I wish all dealerships would take this issue seriously.
How long has it been? Other people have been reporting smooth shifts for a while after TCU reset, but eventually it came back again.

i had the issue of hard downshift from 3 to 2 and when i got it to the dealer first time they scanned it and told me nothing is off !! but the second time i floored it and smelled something like plastic and when i got to the dealer i was told it's a "solenoid valve" need to be replaced if i remember correctly and the same issue happened again after a while around 2K km , so i am guessing its time related after resetting the learning values and not actually related to distance traveled
