  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I just picked up a 2009 Genesis V8 sedan with 78k miles for $9,000. Hyundai would have never been on my radar, but after attending a Genesis test drive event in Santa Monica a few months ago, I was amazed by the progress made by Hyundai and my perception was changed forever.

The car came with the tech package that has the Lexicon sound system along with navigation. It's about the best sounding stock system I have heard on any car. It even has air conditioned seat. The leather seats are so soft and supple, unlike the hard / cheap leather seats that came with my Infiniti G35.

As for the driving experience...the V8 power delivery is smooth and linear with very little noise intruding into the cabin. The handling is somewhere between BMW firmness and Lexus cloud-like ride quality. It actually handles well with the rear drive platform.

Based on my extensive research on sites like Edmunds and this forum, the reliability is similar to Lexus according to owners, but only time will tell. I had to drive 100 miles to pick up the car. On the way back, I even got 26 miles per gallon.

In my opinion, it is the best kept secret as an used car purchase as people are still wary of the Hyundai reputation from the 80s and 90s. The V6 models can be had for less, perhaps making it a even better buy.

Just want to say that this could be the best automotive deal in my lifetime.

Welcome to the '09 Tech club! :welcome:

You're quite right. The sound system in this car is phenomenal, one of the best that's ever been.

A good '09 for $9k is an incredible value.

Congrats! It's nice to see ongoing appreciation for the 1st Gen offering. It's a true classic car and a breakthrough vehicle for Hyundai. It will be interesting to see how you rate the suspension of your '09, which was called "skittish" by many reviewers. Maybe the first owner of your car upgraded to some of the later fixes that became available. I almost bought a used light blue '10 in '11, but ended up buying a new '12. Sadly, that pretty blue color was discontinued after '11, but I do love my Cabernet Red Pearl.

One word of advice on the 2009 4.6 V8. If you start the car, don't ever turn it off until you wait at least a several minutes for it to warm up (unless the engine was already warm when you started it). It's possible that the engine was already replaced under warranty.

Drove my 09 past 250k miles without any issues. Ditto Mark’s comments that tau doesn’t like. Start pull out of garage and shut off. Needs a couple minutes running or next start is rough.

Your car is due for a transmission fluid change. Its a ZF transmission made in Germany and is used in several high end euro cars ie. Bentley, Jag, BMW. The ZF uses a very specific Fluid and must be same spec. I had transmission fluid changed (not flushed) every 75k to 80k and the transmission was shifting like new at 220,000 miles. The service is not cheap, cost is 500.00 to 700.00 at dealer which is where I always had mine done. My advice is do not skip or postpone the service as a new transmission cost over 6000.00. Some will tell you the transmission is sealed and no service is needed, that is BS. The ZF transmission company recommends fluid changes. site link https://www.zf.com/usa_canada/en_us/corporate/aftermarket/spare_parts_corporate/transmissions_corporate/how_to_change_oil/change_oil.html

Never had my 09 drained. Just lucky I’m sure but the book says no service. And I agree at some point they need service the question is when.

Congrats on the great deal. I also have an 09 Tech Package V8. It's a wonderful car, but like any first-year run, there are some things to keep an eye out for.
As well as the advice above, also keep a good ear on the engine. If you start noticing any sort of ticking(similar to a lifter tick in a solid lifter car), take it to a shop to have the valve springs checked(unless you're mechanically adept and can do the inspection or work yourself). In the early run engines, the valve springs are prone to cracking. Finding the issue early means you can have the valve cover popped off and have the valve spring removed right there in the head.
If it goes with a cracked spring too long, it will drop the spring in the cylinder and create a situation that could be a total engine replacement. Ask me how I know..... lol

Congrats on your "new" purchase. We've loved (pampered) our '09, and it's taken care of us. Until yesterday. I had noted a leak of some kind a few days before making my scheduled service....And here's my dilemma on the issue: Had a big service about 98K-99K and was given a very clean bill of health, a handshake, the "are ya ready to trade we'd love to have it" conversation and sent on my way. Bam!...hit the wall of the 100,000 mile warranty.
Then...VERY NEXT service, 103K miles, oil change/tire rotate, they come back with over $2,100 in needed repairs that included a new seal (rear?) to stop the leak mentioned earlier plus other items (I'm just now heading to pick up the car..I don't even have the final list yet). Just got the call back from service adviser that not even a good-faith deal can be worked out to at least 50/50 on the repair. I'm early in my investigation but was hoping someone had a direction that may have been taken (who-what-when-where) to get a solution.

I am a little confused as to whether you discovered or suspected a problem before it hit 100K miles?

If the engine is leaking oil according to dealer, do you see any on the ground? What does the oil level on the dipstick look like after every 500 to 1000 miles?

The warranty is offered by Hyundai Motor America, not a Hyundai dealer, and most likely you would have to open a "goodwill" claim with HMA to see if they would cover it (which I doubt, but who knows).

Sorry I'm late replying...too much travel. The car is my wife's baby so I don't get to drive it that much. I do keep it maintained for her via manufacturer
recommendation and dealer service schedule. I had already scheduled the next regular oil change, but, during a sweep out of the garage noticed a small oil stain where her car parks, that was not there (to my knowledge) just a few days earlier. I checked the oil level but nothing was out of line. Since the service was the very next day (103K miles) I didn't call them in advance but told the service rep about it at check-in and he said he'd have the tech look at it. He verified the seal leak as the problem. As noted in the original post it was "out of warranty" due to being over 100K, but I had everything checked over at the 98-99K point (that included other service items too) and all was great according to the dealer. Dealer said they "went online" to check for the Goodwill Warranty coverage but got word from Hyundai it was "declined" due to mileage. **UPDATE**: We made calls, did private messages on Hyundai Facebook page, emails and got word back from Hyundai March 26th that the repair WOULD be covered under warranty. I contacted the service rep, he verified they had received info from Hyundai about the covered repair, said they'd provide a loaner (via rental) and I dropped the car off the 27th. Wife picked it up the afternoon of the 28th and, so far, all is well. We are now back to being happy campers ...

I brought my '09 in for an oil change at 95k and was told the rear differential had a leak and the gasket had to be replaced. When they went to replace the gasket the mechanic said the case was full of metal and the differential needed to be replaced. All done under extended warranty. At 105k I justed dropped it off for an oil change and to chek why the tranny was slipping. The mechanic said the tranny was leaking fluid and lack of fluid may be the cause of the slipping. I'm waiting to get it back. All covered under extended warranty.
