  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello. Just got a 15 genesis 5.0. They key fob does not lock and unlock the car. I have to push the button on the door handle to unlock it. The car starts and even senses when I am near with the key by unfurling the mirrors. The key also shows the red light when I press any button. It just does not lock and unlock. Any ideas? Thanks.

Both fobs? If it does not work on either fob the problem is likely in the car, if one works, it is likely in the fob.

Unfortunately it came with just the one fob.

Change the battery.

The proximity sensor isn’t battery operated, the lock and unlock is. So the car will still start and the door proximity will start work. However if the battery is having issues when you turn off the car, keep the doors closed and wait about 15 seconds and a notice will pop up on the dash cluster telling you the battery needs to be replaced.

just went through this with my fob, battery was dead for nearly 3 weeks but door proximity worked and car started without issue until I was able (remembered lol) to get a battery ordered on amazon. Just couldn’t use the buttons on the fob, and yes the red light on fob still lit up, but apparently there wasn’t enough juice to reach the module to enact the lock/unlock command.

I don't believe that this is correct. The fobs have three "systems" in them.

1. A passive (as in powered by a magnetic field) encrypted ID chip. This is why you can hold the fob up to the start button (or put it in a special slot in some cases), and get the car to start. The magnetic filed powers this chip and the chip authenticates to the car. Take your battery out of the fob, and you will have to hold the fob to the start button to get the car to start.

2. The proximity transceiver. This system is powered by the batteries in the fob, and listens for a broadcast from the car. When it is very close to the car, it receives the broadcast from the car and transmits an authentication back to the car. It takes battery power to do this, as the field from the car just isn't strong enough to power it. Take your battery out of your fob, and pressing the button on the door to open the car will no longer work.

3. A remote transmitter. This system transmits to the car when one of the buttons is pressed.

There are also separate systems on the car that deal with these different systems. So, the fault could be with the fob, or with the car.

OK if that’s true then why did my key fob buttons not work but the door proximity button dI’d and the car started with no issue, then as soon as I replace the battery in the fob the fob buttons started working again?

Maybe the battery for two low for the higher power button transmitter, but still enough for the lower powered proximity transceiver?
Like I said, try it without the battery. Note that the wallet proximity card has a battery too.

Put new battery. Still no remote functionality but proximity sensing works.

One of my fobs just stopped working correctly yesterday. My wife had the fob in her purse and the car would not start. I checked the fob battery and it tested 3 volts. I put a new one in it anyway. Same result. The red light on the fob only comes on when the unlock button is pushed. The lock button does not work. The trunk button works, but the red light does not come on. Need a new fob? I forgot to mention 2015 Genesis 3.8 Sedan.

What I did was sell the car. I loved that car dearly, but the mistake I made was buying the first generation (2015) of of the car. Turn signal bulb burning out continually, left back up light burnt out, and faulty key fobs to mention a few items. Still to me , the best looking car on the road.
