  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Does anyone know if a used (Gen) Key FOB can be reprogramed for a 2012 Genesis? I assumed it could be but a friend said some cars will not acknowledge a reprogramed FOB.

The new FOB, your other FOB, and the car all have to be re-programmed together. You can't update just a single FOB to match your other/existing FOB and the car.

At least that's how it was for the 2009s and what's in my owner's manual. Even brand new replacement FOBs from the dealer require the other FOB & the car to all get reprogrammed as a trio.

I went down this road awhile back.

First of all the FOB (Smart Key) can only be programed once, after that if it isn’t with the original car you might as well use it for a fishing lure. (To small for a boat anchor)

I found a brand new FOB on E-bay from a guy in South Korea for $112.27. I ordered it and took it to my Hyundai Service to get it programed for my car. (You need to original FOB along with this new Fob to be able to program the new one). The technician brought the new FOB out to the waiting area and said that the fob was programed to start the car, but it would not lock or unlock the doors or perform any of the functions because the RF frequency was not the correct one to work with the car. ($42 bucks down the drain for the programing or another fishing lure).

Sent the FOB back to the E-bay guy and his reply was, “Yea there are different RF frequencies used in different countries”. He refunded my money even though the FOB was useless now that it had been programed.

Do not buy a used FOB, it is useless. You have to go to the Hyundai Service department and ask them for the correct P/N for your vehicle and then try to find a new one that matches that P/N. Most likely you will wind up back at the dealer ask them how much is a new replacement FOB like I did.

Tighten up baby, the cost of a new FOB from the dealer is around $ 275, with a 20% discount from a coupon the service department sent out I was the proud owner of a new FOB for $ 239.

Now if you want a hard key that is laser cut, the price of cutting the hard key is $ 65 and I found a blank on E-bay for $ 15 bucks. The hard key lets you unlock the doors, lock /unlock the trunk, lock/unlock the glove box. It will not start the car.

My dealer was asking 285$ for the key + 50$ for programming. I tried ebay, after failing to reprogram the 1st key, returning the 2nd, i tried this seller in michigan. HE was charging about 120$ per key, i was able to get it for 100$

I took it to the dealer, paid him 50$ to reprogram and the key worked like a charm, the tech came out and told me that the keys can be programmed only once, and this should be the old key of this genesis.

Good luck
