  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

When I purchased my 2013 Genesis used, it only came with one key FOB. Obviously having a back up is a definite! It seems like going the dealer route to purchase and have programmed is the most expensive one. Any suggestions?

Dealer only. From what I understand the key fobs cannot be reprogramed to a different car. I know its a bummer, I lost one of mine to one of my Mercedes and it cost me 250.00.

I just purchased a used key FOB with new blank key on ebay for $75. Then I took it to the local dealer to program the FOB and cut the key. Dealer charged for half hour labor ($50). It works perfect. Car is a 2012 4.6 Sedan.

You can find key fobs on ebay for a fraction of MSRP, but a caution. Hyundai changed programming in 2012, so prior year key fobs cannot be programmed to fit your 2013.
I know this because I tried to have my dealer program a 2009 key fob for my 2013. Didn't work. Anyway, I have this 2009-11 key fob and will sell it for $35 including a blank key.

My advice, if you purchase a used Genesis with only 1 keyfob, do a deal with the dealer..You need 2 key fobs, they want to sell the vehicle..
Do a deal before you sign...............:)

Thanks to all! It looks like the dealer route is the safest and most expensive route. BTW, why do I need a key cut? It's a keyless vehicle.

When either your fob battery or car battery dies, and they will at the most inopportune time, you'll need the metal key to get into the car. You'll want to RTFM on this.

The key is in the fob....

Driver's door and the trunk lid have a key release, as does the lock for the glove box. This way you can still get into the vehicle if the key fob battery dies, if there is a lot of radio frequency interference preventing the car from detecting the FOB, or if the car battery is dead. If the fob battery is dead, stuffing the fob into the slot under the DVD player will allow the car to detect it via RFID methods so you can still start the engine.

The key is also meant to be kept by you when using valet parking; you can push the button in the glove box to disable the electrical trunk release buttons (interior and exterior trunk release buttons) and then lock the glove box with the key. Big items in the trunk are now protected... small items can still be stolen via the ski pass-thru and a determined thief could use the pass-thru to reach for the trunk safety/emergency release handle inside the trunk... so stuff in the trunk isn't 100% secure but it's still better than nothing.

I believe there is also a slot by the shift lever you can insert key to allow shifting out of park (if shift lock solenoid fails). This also allows car to start without fob present.
