  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I just found out that my remote key has a manual key inside it to turn on the ignition and unlock the trunk. Where do you insert the manual key in the car?
I looked in the owner's manual but it wasn't very helpful. I know it's a dumb question but humor me.

the metal key is just for the glove box and the trunk. You can take this out if you are going to have the car valet parked so they can't get into your trunk of glove box.

check section 4-9 of manual.

As others noted, it's for the trunk and glove box only - it won't work as an ignition key since there is no place to use it as an ignition key. Keep it when you hand over the black electronic part of the key fob to a valet. Remember to set the trunk enable/disable button inside the glove box to the "button out" position to disable the trunk's electric lock functions, then lock the glove box with the key. Now the valet can't get into the trunk nor the glove box... though one can still reach into the trunk via the rear seat pass-thru I guess.

If the electronic fob portion fails to start the vehicle - dead battery in the fob for example - stuff the whole fob into the covered slot at the bottom of the dash console, underneath the stereo/AV system and next to the storage slot. The dash has a separate RF transmitter/receiver (similar to RFID tags) that'll read the fob's guts and allow the START button to function; this is what replaces a conventional ignition key as a backup to the normal keyless ignition. In theory though you should have advance warning of a dying FOB battery - the FOB is supposed to inform the car of a dying battery and a warning appears on the display panel between the speedometer and tachometer.

It also works in the door. I have had several occasions where pressing the button on the door and pressing the button on the remote would not open the door and had to use the key in the door. On one of these occasions I had to put the remote in the slot in the dash in order to start the car. The last few times the car started with the remote in my pocket. The last three occasions where the door would not open have been in the last ten days.

Be sure that you are not carrying your key fob and your cell phone in the same pocket. I had issues with this when I first got my Genny. Apparently if your cell phone and the key fob are in close proximity, there can be some signal interference.

Thanks, I keep them in different pockets to keep from scratching the face of the phone. P.S. I don't consider this a real problem. I have had the car for more than three years and couldn't be happier. I have had no real problems just an occasional miner annoyance. Mine is one of the very first with the tech package (before the V8 was available).
