  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Model Type
1G Genesis Sedan (2009-2014)
The Kia Stinger, which is roughly equivalent to the G70 (has same drivetrain options), has won the 2018 MotorWeek Drivers Choice Award for best sports sedan, and also the overall Best New Car for all categories.

That puts a lot of pressure on Genesis Motors to get the G70 to market in the USA this spring as a 2019 model.

True, they could be losing a lot of sales to the Stinger right now. But, the G70 is going to be a different type of car - for the most part. It's going to be more luxurious - but at the same time - a noticeably better performer. I'm pretty confident that Genesis will sell a ton of them. They do need to get the car here, though. It's been rolling around in South Korea for a while now...

I suspect it will be a bit more luxurious, but how will it be a better performer? The Stinger offers the 1-4 Turbo, and the optional 3.3L V6 Turbo that is the same one as on the G80 Sport. Stinger also uses the same 8-speed transmission.

isn't that the same powertrain as on the G70?

I went to the Chicago Auto Show today and they had a wide body Stinger.... it looks so sexy! lol

I think the G70 will be a few hundred pounds lighter than the stinger so I suspect thats why they are saying it’s going to bit more sporty than the stinger..

Makes sense to market it that way ..stinger = grand tourer.. G70 = sport.

Until we start seeing some North American reviews to compare its going to be speculation.

I think you should read the review of the Stinger GT at the MotorWeek site above. It does 0-60 in 4.5-seconds. I wonder if the information about weight differences between Stinger and G70 are accurate for cars equipped with same powertrain (including AWD if chosen).

There is no coordination of marketing between Kia and Hyundai, even though they share parts and technology. They often go after the same market segment.

G70 is hundreds of lbs lighter, has better structural rigidity than the Stinger, and is smaller in dimensions according to executives at Genesis. Some websites have the 3.3T in the G70 as being dynoed higher than the 3.3T in the Stinger and the G70 beats the Stinger in a straight line according to that drag race video on YouTube. The Stinger has done 0-60 in as low as 4.4s so I wouldn't be surprised to see the G70 do low 4s.

I don't think the difference is enough to offset the fact that the Stinger is getting a head start, and has been given the MotorWeek overall Driver's Choice Award for all 2018 vehicles in all categories (and obviously in its own category of Sports Sedans). The G70 will not be eligible for most awards until next year, since it is going to be 2019 model.

If the 3.3 TT on the G70 Dyno's more than the Stinger, that may mean Genesis has tuned it in a way that might reduce reliability.

I would not be AT ALL concerned with the power boost being given to the Genesis G70 over the Kia Stinger. It's really not all that significant and it's been extensively tested before and after release in South Korea.

Between the power boost and lighter weight, I wouldn't be surprised if it did 0-60 in 3.9 seconds. The Kia Stinger has a best time of 4.4 seconds so far...

This article when they drove both it's clear the G70 will be the better sports car. Based on other magazines 0-60 times it also appears the G70 will be quicker by how much is hard to say yet but my guess only a few tenths of a second and lighter by as much as 300lbs since it's 2 1/2" shorter as well.

1. That depends on what one is looking for in a sports car.

2. I am not sure the G70 tested was a production model, at least not a US production model.

Even better if it wasn't a US production model since the US model will have a better suspension.

What do you mean by "better."

Probably means that it will be more firm and better at roadholding at the expense of ride comfort.

Right, which means worse to me. I suspect that the Stinger is more than firm enough for the vast majority of people, even those who want a sporty car. If Genesis is going to pull another stunt like they did with the ridiculously firm (and jittery) suspension on the 2009 Hyundai Genesis, they are making a big mistake.

Don't see how that puts any pressure on Genesis to launch the G70 before everything is ready (or as much as it's going to be); better to launch the G70 in the fall if only a handful of Genesis dealerships are up and running by spring (which would frustrate prospective buyers) - as seems likely.

By all accounts the G70 is the better sports sedan as that was the intent behind its development as opposed to the Stinger which was developed as a Gran Turismo.

Also, being a better handler doesn't has to impact ride quality as long as they tune it properly.

Hyundai's Australian tuning does a better job when it comes to tuning for handling and ride than in other markets.

I didn't say they should roll out the G70 before the car is ready, although I think waiting for dedicated Genesis dealers is going to be suicide.

^ The US spec G70 will likely be ready on schedule - which is sometime in the spring or early summer.

So you think it's a good idea to launch the G70 then when there will only be a handful of Genesis dealerships up and running?

Not only would that be frustrating for prospective buyers (to find out there there isn't a Genesis dealership available within a certain geographic area), but why would Genesis launch an expensive ad campaign for the G70 when sales would be extremely limited due to the small # of retail outlets?

You are assuming they are going to only release G70 to dedicated Genesis dealers. I don't think they will have those dealers ready even by the fall, so that idea is going to be suicide if they stick to it.

But from everything else I have seen about Genesis USA, they have no idea what they are doing. Fortunately, the cars are build in Korea, far away from the Genesis USA idiots.
