Knocking/clicking noise from engine

The 3.8 has solid lifters and if not adjusted correctly they will be noisy and have premature wear. Its one reason that I got got the V8. I did not want ot go through the addtional maintenace of having valve clearance checked and adjusted every 60,000 miles or so.

Here is my new oil analysis:

SCOTT: Thanks for the note on the noises. If the noises are a result of poor engine wear, we're not seeing
any evidence in the used oil at 33,845 miles. Metals are steady overall, with just a slight increase noted at
iron. Iron could show wear at steel parts, but we're more inclined to think it's a result of the longer oil run,
since iron is the one metal that accumulates in the oil the longer you run it. We'll watch it, but for now it
seems harmless. Note the trace of moisture. You may change the oil to get rid of it, but it doesn't seem to be
hurting anything. Overall, not bad.

Service dept found that the oil was very low and added a bunch of oil, but this didn't solve the clicking sound. Service folks also didn't quite know what was causing the clicking - thought only way to understand it was to begin to take engine apart, at a minimum cost of $500+.

I took the car home (2 miles to my house) to think about how much this was going to cost, and the engine died on me about 5 blocks from my house.

Was able to barely start it again, and the car inched along back to my house.

How bad can it be?

You need to state what engine you have and number of miles on the car. Also tell us if oil changes have been done at required intervals and if OEM filters were used or aftermarket filters. What type of oil has been used? Have you use "quick change" oil service stores like Jiffy Lube?

I believe it is a 4.6L engine, with about 32,000 miles

Oil changes were done at infrequent intervals - maybe once per year since we bought the car (used) in 2010 with about 12,000 miles on it.

Oil chages were done occasionally at a dealer, occasionally at jiffy lube.

I have no idea what kind of oil was used.

dsw,better start gathering any service records you may have, or have access to. Is your car a CPO?

yes, it was a certified pre-owned, and came with a warranty, but that is gone now. Am I missing something here?

CPO should give you 10yrs, 100,000 mi warranty. I suspect you're going to need it. Knock on wood.

Jiffy Lube does not use the OEM filters and that is the first red flag as to the problem. Also, if you do not know what oil, then the wrong weight oils could have been used and if dino oil was used and you went way beyond the recommended change interval in the manual then that is another red flag. I would start by having the oil and filter changed using a 5w30 synthetic oil like Mobil 1, Valvoline synpower, or Pennzoil Platinum. Also ONLY use the Hyundai oil filter for your car. There was a TSB issued a while back about after market oil filters causing noise in the 4.6 engine.

New member warning...Glad to be here and share my experiences!
I have just had my 2012 Genesis Sedan at dealership to help with knocking issue at start-up. They changed the oil and filter twice for some reason?? The returned the car to me saying the engines are noisy and that maybe some time in the past the previous owner had oil changed at a place that did not use the correct oil filter, even though it had the correct one on it that day. The noise goes away if car was recently running when it is started again...sometimes.

I think it's the timing chain tensioner that makes the noise at start-up. The car runs really well. I have no other issues at all. It just sounds like a POS when I start it. Anyone have thoughts on my diagnosis??

2009 Genesis 4.6L, 72k mi.
Started hearing the same intermittent noise in recent weeks. Went to the dealer and, miraculously, it was doing it when I got there. So everyone heard it. Mine is on the driver side toward the front of the motor. They pulled the value cover but found "no abnormal wear in the valve train" and "no slack on the timing chain". And somewhere along the way, while the valve cover off, the noise went away. So they put it all back together and opened a case w/ the Hyundai Tech Line. Hyundai told them to put it all back together and change the oil. Dealer noted they replaced a non-OEM oil filter (I get mine changed at Merchant Tire). They kept it overnight, and the next morning it was still quiet. So they charged me $128 for the diagnostic and oil change and sent me home. Within 1/2 hour, it was making the noise again. I called the dealer and they said that since the car is "performing as expected", the noise is declared as being "normal". And since the engine is not throwing a diagnostic code, they claim they don't have anything to fix. An understandable position, I suppose. But now they say my only option is to take it up w/ Hyundai directly. will give it a day or two and see how she sounds.

Unsatisfied w/ the dealer's diagnosis, I went to another dealer (apparently they CANNOT see each others service tickets). They said it's the clutch/bearing on the A/C compressor. Thanks for the tip. The final outcome was that I had a local shop replace the clutch and pulley assembly. $531 total (including $303 in parts). Just another example of how useful it is to find a reputable shop one can trust. And although most dealers may also be trustworthy, $1495 to fix a $531 problem doesn't evoke confidence for those of us who are out-of-warranty and have to actually pay to fix things.

As an aside, after some arm-twisting, the first dealer refunded the $128 they charged for the incorrect diagnosis.

So, after much wrangling, my 4.6 is quiet and a pleasure to drive once again.

my 2012 genesis 4.6 is doing the same thing. I guess I gotta take it in for them to check it. That squeaky noise is very annoying lol. i am lucky that I have extended warranty that would cover both parts/labor.

Try using a 5W-30 or 0W-30 Synthetic Oil like Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge (not Castrol Syntec). Also, try premium gas (if not already using it).

Would it be the same for the 3.8 v6 sedan version
