The latest: The noise did not go away and, in fact, got somewhat worse and is now constant. Unsatisfied w/ the dealer's diagnosis, I went to another dealer (apparently they CANNOT see each others service tickets). They said it's the clutch/bearing on the A/C compressor. That kinda makes sense as the noise is clearest at the front of the motor on the driver's side. They also said they removed the A/C drive belt and the noise was gone completely w/ the engine running.
so it seems I either need a new compressor ($1,495 parts and labor at the dealer) or find someone who knows how, and is willing, to replace just the clutch and/or bearing. The dealer refused to do just that. Their ONLY option is $1,495 for a new compressor.
