If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Took it to dealer Multiple times and they never hear anything. And says its a characteristic of the car Is this normal?????? Anyone else have the problem? Will post video soon.

One of two things, sounds like valve slap or spun bearings. Symptoms of oil starvation. Either way, not good. Rebuild the motor.

Well, I hear a similar noise on my 2012 Rspec. Not quite as loud but the dealer states this is normal. I'm sure its something that gets louder with time.

The GDI engines make a particular noise not present on the 4.6 engine.

My 4.6 has ticking each time I start it, but it goes away pretty quickly depending on the temp. The colder it is outside the longer it takes to quiet down. I'm not worried about it, engine runs like a champ. Also

Try using a 5W-30 or 0W-30 Synthetic Oil like Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge (not Castrol Syntec). Also, try premium gas (if not already using it).

That sounds like a valve tap or could be an injector. Have a mechanic with a stethescope check the engine when its cold. Leave car at dealer overnite and meet with the mechanic the next morning and have the sound checked with you standing there with him/her. If its a lifter that is not an complete rebuild, it injector then its a simple replacement the injector on that cyclinder.

I had a very light case of this a coupe weeks ago with my gen. turns out I was 3 and a half quarts low on oil leaving me with only 1 and a half quarts :O
oil change has been done and everything is fine now/

WTF was that about? How did you lose so much oil? How long (and and how many miles) before it was last changed when you noticed the problem?

The 4.6 is not a DI engine, so that should eliminate "DI clicking syndrome." There are a few easy things you could do before you get trapped into expensive and unnecessary repairs.

Do an oil/filter change with Mobil 1 0-20 and throw in a can of Seafoam. It has done miracles for engines beginning to accumulate sludge and buildup. It's also good for fuel systems, but I'll suggest you start with a bottle of Chevron Techron with the next fill up. You should probably consider a premium top tier fuel like Mark suggested. Then take the car out on the highway and drive it normally for 100-200 miles. You should end up with a cleaner engine that gets better lubrication, more efficient combustion and better fuel delivery.

Yes, there is some chance you already have permanent damage to valvetrain and other components, but this is worth a try, especially if the car has a history of short trips and lack of adequate oil warmup. Good luck.

I have over 65000 miles on my Genesis and never used oil, had over 230,000 on my 2004 Acura and never used oil. You have a serious problem if the engine was 3.5 quarts low. Time to use the 100,000 mile warranty and get a new engine.

Member Emdoller had this issue, some sort of Valve Clip was the solution to his issue - I sent him a message long ago about this and this was his response:

My dealer is located in Roseville CA. Their service was top notch. Regarding the issue, the showed me a drawing of the valve train and showed me what they replaced. I don't know the specific name of the part as there were only part numbers. They said there was one other car that had this. They did not know until they called their " regional service rep".

I'm in CA near Sacramento. My dealer was Roseville Hyundai and they were great. It took them a while to figure it out and had to fix it twice. After the first time it happened when I let the car sit two weeks which I believe allowed one of the valve lifters to bleed down and register the check engine light. I don't know exactly what they did to fix it but it took a week, them calling in the experts, and almost needing to pull the motor.

I've never had a check engine light on though.......................

Thank you everyone for your response. I will try all the advice you guys have given me and call the dealer to check again. I get an oil change by dealer approx every 3500 miles and I run on Plus gas "will try Premium". I drive my car about 70 miles a day to work and back. When I told the dealer about this problem the first two times they didn't hear anything. Third time the guy at the dealer told me that is was a normal nosie of the lifter? whats a lifter? sorry I don't know what that is. hahaha IDK if he is BSing me but I don't see why they wouldn't fix it and hear it. I hope I don't have to get a rebuild. Car runs great though just the noise makes it sound bad. Car is at the dealship now getting the ABS assembly replace due to sporadic pressure lost to the brake pedal after car has comes to full stop so I'll have them check again. Thanks again everyone!

There is no way that tapping sound is normal. My engine has 54k miles and it purrs like a kitten. Try the Mobil 1. But in my opinion, I would stay away from the seafoam... Thats just me.

Good luck. :)

I agree about the seafoam. That is used to treat different problems than likely is occuring here. Obvously, I also agree about using a high quality synthetic (I use Mobil 1 0W-30 in a warm climate).

I agree with the Seafoam opinion - Much too potent imo, and I'm wouldn't be surprised if this is what caused my fuel pump to take a dump.

Sure you did not get the Diesel Genesis? LOL J/K
Saw/heard your video and it immediately reminded me of this video

In the comments bellow the vid the guys says it the timing chain Oh really? I don't think so. I had a T-bird with a 302 that in her later years; sounded just like your Genny at low RPM. It was the main bearings due to a weak/old oil pump. Oil level and pressure/supply is where that noise lies boss. ;)

My engine oil analysis comes out just fine with no extra wear metals in the oil at all, and Blackstone deemed my engine wear as average. The 2009 does have a loud timing chain, which is why Hyundai changed it to a quieter chain the very next year. Either way, I'm not worried about it, I have full powertrain warranty, and I have owned other cars with noisy engines and they have ran just fine 150,000 miles later with no problems.

Loud timing chain huh.....as far as I have known timing gears are the loud ones and chains are quiet. Chains are not as precise and prone to stretching out and getting out of "time" Where as gears are noisy, but give you better performance as they don't stretch out over time due to heat and stress. If a timing chain makes that type of slapping noise then it is too loose on the sprockets, and that slapping sound is the chain hitting the housing that is covering it.

Either way it is not an acceptable noise from an gas engine at idle. No matter what the dealer says; if it is acceptable to him ask him to show you another slightly used $44,000.00 luxury sedan that makes the same noise? I bet you'll get the "Its Howdy Doody Time" look (for those of you who do not know Howdy Doody put your arms out to your sides slightly bent and then bounce like a puppet) Now picture your dealer giving you the same look when asked the above question.

Am I missing something here and or being unreasonable?
