My genesis has a ticking / clicking noise in the steering wheel. So far, I've taken it in 5 times for this issue. 5 times, Hyundai has "fixed" the issue. They have done that by:

• replacing a clock spring
• replaced the left paddle shifter assembly
• replaced the power steering rack assembly
• replaced the steering column
• replaced the haptic steering controller

My service department has been outstanding, but I think they're getting towards their wits end as well. The genesis tech line has been zero help, so I'm throwing the situation to you all. No suggestion is bad, all ideas are welcome. A little more info... the noise really only presents itself when cornering, but especially when the front wheels are on different elevations (i.e. I'm driving up into my garage from the alley in that video). The noise also goes away for 12-24 hours after each of the "fixes" listed above, but then comes back during normal operation. I'm in Missouri and the car is garaged most of the time. Any other info that I can provide, I'm happy to.

Mine does this too. Not sure yet if it's temperature related or not since I've only had my '15 during the life draining heat wave months we're having. Not noticeable during a slight turn but very noticeable when going around a 90 degree turn. But, to be honest, I don't recall hearing it the last few days. Then again I have the a/c blowing on high so maybe that's why. I'll listen for it today.

Could be something like that. You know how sound travels through things. But I will say that it sounds like it's very local (like in the wheel) on mine. Very close and clear sound. Like a crackling.

Exactly like that. The best way that I can described it is like someone is squeezing an empty plastic water bottle ever so slightly, right behind where the steering wheel attaches to the steering column.

Mine started the creaking/crackling a few weeks back; clock spring (as had been stated by many out here) was replaced last week and sound is gone and steering back to quiet as a church mouse. I would say it HAS to be the clock spring, but with your techs literally replacing everything I'm guessing they would've determined if the new clock spring was bad/defective. But then again, there are many comments out here that question some of these Hyundai techs. And this does sound like it is coming directly from your wheel - mine clicked more but still similar and only on startup and subsequently here and there.

Have they confirmed that it is definitely not a bad replacement of the clock spring, or potentially installed incorrectly (disclaimer: I'm no mechanic here)? They may be good techs just going down the line of next, next, next, on their problem list, yet no one is zeroing in on it when apart and saying, lets order another clock spring because the newly installed one is simply bad. That's the difference between a great tech who solves problems vs. ones who simply check off the boxes; not saying that's the case here, but I think you catch my drift. These days it amazes me what gets overlooked.

If you have any doubts, I'd tell them to change the clock spring again. Outside of that, I'm highly curious to hear how this gets resolved.

mine had the issue as well 2018 G80 Sport,. dealer fixed it on the first try, told me he had seen it many times on many Hyundai models. it's not the clock springs, mine wasn't replaced. I was told it is the cables connected to the clock spring rubbing against the housing as the wheel is turned, a simple zip tie to pull them away from the plastic housing.

As I recall he zip tied the wires to the clip that they slide through to keep them from moving back and forth:

Hmm, interesting. I've had that cracking sound on my '15 5.0 and now on '18 sport, just started hearing in recently at ~9000 miles.

Hey darecki, surprised your '18 sport is already starting this. I wonder how many of those few pesky items haven't been resolved by Mfg. yet, i.e. inferior clock spring, rubber around the trunk camera, A-pillar wear, etc. Curious what else you've noticed on your '18 that was similarly in need of repair as your prior '15 or '16...anything yet?

Point taken, thanks for reminding me of my former 750iL that had more than it's fair share of issues over the years, but damn I loved that car.

Love my Genny too and luckily the few things mentioned above have been easy fixes. Heck, so far Hyundai has been impressive in my experience - last weeks service took care of everything, including a loose rearview, trunk rubber replaced, new clock spring, distorted passenger puddle light replaced, and the latch on the trunk access lid behind my rear seat console was broken off and they replaced the entire console (~$1700) as it's one-piece according to the SA, all under warranty. Great service, but Hyundai should simplify some of these things to save on warranty costs - a latch panel that should have easily been replaced for maybe $100 took 3+ hours to replace by having to gut my rear seat.

My wife fixed her's with Velcro. Not sure what she did but she did it. Got tired of it being open and I was dragging my feet on fixing it.

Just that. Everything else seems to work perfectly. Even my pano roof doesn't rattle, but I don't open it at all, lol

Glad to hear things are tight, so maybe they worked some of the small kinks out. So far so good for me on the Pano Roof, but then again I've only opened it a few times in the past couple months.

Thanks for this...mine does it too and the dealer has only ever been able to fix it for a few days before it comes back.
