So I finally found the G80 I wanted. The financing was secured through my bank.I just made a $500 refundable deposit and the dealership calls and tells me the car was backed into and has a crease in the passenger side quarter panel. The manager asked if I am still interested in the car. He assured me there was no structural or mechanical damage and it should be ready in a week.
My question is how much of a discount should I ask for? Will this show on the cars previously clean Carfax report? Should I ask to see the paperwork of the repair?
Any advice appreciated.
TIA

Since it’s not an insurance job it probably will not show on car fax. I’m assuming the dealer will just eat this but it’s worth asking about. If they turn in an insurance claim and the VIN is input into the insurance database the repair will be recorded. Cars that have been repainted, in my opinion, you can always find tell tell signs of the repair. Insist they remove any trim or window molding so nothing needs masking. Most shops will not do this without a fight. Masking is one thing that gives away a repair when looked at closely. Ask if they will have to do any blending to adjacent panels for color match? I’d ask for another $1000 discount now that the new car has been in a body shop. Else tell the dealer to find you another car. Unless you are real finicky the repair will probably be fine. Those of us who are real anal, as soon as I saw a sign of the repair, it would forever bother me on a new car.

If you end up not buying it, they will probably just sell it to the next person without mentioning it. Point being, if you ask for a big discount, they may turn you down.

Do you know how bad the damage is? I'd want to see it before moving forward. Maybe it can be fixed without paint, but I doubt it.

I bought a dealer demo G37 and drove it for 10 years. It was sold to me as a new car. In the last year I had it, I discovered the left rear corner paint was slightly different. I think it was hit and repaired, as that explains why the left exhaust pipe was slightly lower than the right one. Also later found a red stain under front right floor mat, my guess is the driver's drink was spilled on impact.

It bugs me that they didn't tell me about the repair, but all in all, the car was perfect for 10 years and I really enjoyed it, and the repair never was an issue.

I would look at the damage before repairs are made and then sign off on the repair before any transactions are done. Your money should be to only hold the car, no commitment.

It's a used 2018 G80 5.0 so kinda rare.
I can't look at the damage as the car is 200 miles away and already at the body shop

Ask the dealership to take and send you as many good pics of the damage as possible.
Base on what you see in the pics then make that decision yourself.
Just a precaution. Many body shops today even the reputable ones do shoddy work in repair and I was one of the victims.

If it is a good body shop you would not know it was hit. I'd ask for the deposit as a discount but settle for $250. About 18 months ago my car was hit. My first thought was maybe time to trade but I really can't see where it was damaged.

I'd take any discount I could get and enjoy the drive.

I'd walk...

I'd be inclined too also. Especially if a few good pictures taken before the repair aren't available. Since the dealership brought it up, I would think they'd have some pictures available if requested.

The dealer be like - just a few scratches, it'll buff out, no worries! :hangloose: 😂

Yeah, if the "before" photos were not available, I wouldn't trust it without seeing it. Damage could be a lot worse than they're telling you. After all, used car dealers are such well-trusted groups, right?

My brain goes in the worst direction... like, maybe the car was bought wrecked on the left rear end, but the pictures they initially put up showed a different car from that view - but of same color. They began to repair it, figuring they would sell it once repaired. But Silverhare came along and wants it now, so the story is made up of it getting "backed into". You never know... So if no pics are available of the damage, you will just have to make the decision when you see the car in person.

Do hand-held bondo detectors exist?

1. Rule number 1. Never buy a car sight unseen. Never order a car. Never do ah dealer trade. NEVER. Always see and drive the exact car you are buying. (Yes, I’ve been burned).

2. Rule number 2. There is No Such Thing as a Refundable deposit. You may get your deposit back, or you may not. IF you get it back, you will have to jump through hoops and it may take s long time.

I had something similar happen when I bought my 2012 R-Spec. Got a great deal (as it was the last year's inventory), but when I went to pick up the vehicle I found out that they collided with a raised concrete structure while maneuvering the car to the delivery area which damaged the bottom of the back door and the cill below it. Nice.

Without getting too upset with the sales manager, I asked him what they are willing to do? He said they were completing an estimate at their own shop currently which ended up being $1700. I said ok, but they would have to deliver the car to my home (about a 2hr drive away) and I would expect an additional deduction from the sale price since the car is no longer seen as new. The sales manager said no to both. His reasoning was that the price was already as low as he could go and that if I like they could refund my deposit and scrap the deal. Being frustrated, I said "scrap the deal" to call their bluff. They refunded the $500 deposit to my credit card and the sales guy expressed that he was sorry about how things went.

I had a backup plan at another dealership in the area, but after checking on my phone I no longer saw the ad and then called the dealership to discover that that car had already been sold. Backup plan gone.

I went back to the sales person and proposed that I take immediate delivery but they add in writing on the deal that they will directly pay my local body shop up to $1700 to have the car repaired. The sales manager agreed.

It was a bit of a bummer to have my newly purchased car in the local body shop, but it worked out fine and never regretted it. Without involving insurance there was no record of the repair and the shop used are known for excellent repairs and didn't disappoint.

Thought sharing this might help give perspective. Good luck!

Sorry to hear this. This is a tough situation. Items to consider.

1. As dealer will be eating the repair cost they have little incentive to do a good job. Most likely they'll do the a lower quality job to keep their cost down.

2. Consider having the repair done your self. Get estimates on repair cost and request the dealer give you that cost plus $ for the hassle factor.

3. If the dealer does the repair do a thorough inspection post-work. Request $ for the hassle factor and delay.

4. Specify the repair your want. Do a replacement of the quarter panel versus repair/repaint.

In my own experience they will not do a very good job repairing.

2011 Genesis 3.8
Bought at 5K miles (dealer loaner). Driver door had some minor damage that had been repaired. I subsequently had the door repainted at dealer cost. Afterwards rear windows would periodically roll-down with car turned off during washing car at home. Took to dealer several times and they never fixed it. My neighbor discovered the boot between door and door jamb and not been properly re-installed. After correcting problem never occurred again.

2018 G80 Sport
Again bought at 5K miles (dealer loaner). Discovered road rash on lower front bumper lip at delivery. Dealer fixed poorly "on their own nickel" and paint over-spray on front grill I was able to buff out. Fortunately/UNforntunately ran over sewer drain in field several months later and had entire bumper replaced.

Summary, this car's "cherry has been popped". It is not a brand new car. If you are ok with this and can get compensated go for it.

Completely agree with rule 1.

We don't really know how good the price is nor the damage to estimate is this will be a fair deal or not but considering the price is fair I will ask the dealer to deduct at least $1,000 and you did the repair yourself. This is given the damage is very light and no structural damage.

That being said, I personally will walk off.

Thanks for all the advice people.
The dealership is sending me pics of the damage. I will post them later today.
Fingers crossed

It depends on how long you plan to keep it? Repainting never lasts as long as original paint.

Well only exception is I bought my 2018 brown G80 5.0 on Carvana. They give a lot of pictures and a 7 day /400 mile test drive. Do like it give it back no charge. I had test drove other G80s locally (3.8 and 5.0) but, I didn't want a black interior or a whit, black, gray, or silver exterior. So, I ended up at Carvana and they delivered the car to my door. Took it to the dealership for an ecu update and inspection Carvana even put new tires. 35 months left on factory warranty.

So here are the Pics:

What do you think now?
It's not as bad as I had it in my head.
Does it look like the wheel has any damage?,

It's not that bad. Let them fix it and see how it looks to you.

I'd take the fix and a discount. If a good body shop you will never know it was there.
