  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello.

Found a nice 2009 Genesis Sedan 3.8 at a dealer out of town. Car is two-owner, no accidents, and according to the car fax, appears to be well maintained. It has 66,000 miles on it. Paint appears to be in great condition as well.

Seats are in great condition, haven't seen the vehicle in person yet though.

When I do inspect the vehicle in person, what should I look for? Is there any tell-tale signs of mistreatment or abuse with these cars specifically? Sounds? smells? under the hood inspection? anything i should feel for on the drive?

Thanks in advance.

Well, I guess that gives me my answer...

check for any recalls on that year. make sure they change the oil for you. check tires put in on a hoist and look under it. good luck with it. they are good cars.

Hyundai dealers are required to perform all recall work, even on used cars. Non-mandatory TSB's are different.

The key question: is it under extended warranty?
If not I would think twice.
I can't think of an used Genesis without an extended coverage.
Prices are good and paying this extra may bring lots of peace of mind.

I believe it is too late to get an extended warranty from Hyundai once the 5 year - 60,000 mile warranty period is over.

It partly depends on what trim level one gets. If it is the Base Trim level, there are not many things to go wrong. The other trim levels have had a lot problems with all the fancy features, like the Lexicon audio system, automatic cruise control (which slows down or speeds up based on traffic in front of you), and other such features.

2009 did not have the radar cruise control, not even in the Tech trim.

OP: Take the vin # of the car to a dealer and ask if they will write an extended Hyundai backed warranty (not a 3rd party extended bumper to bumper warranty). If they won't, don't buy the car.

Okay here it is....
Would recommend if possible looking for a 2011 or later. I understand there could be a lot of opposition to this suggestion but for a myriad of reasons that's my opinion. If your financial status doesn't allow then look else ware.

Go for it. 2009 was a reliable year model.

For comparison's sake I bought an '09 Premium Tech DIS 3.8L with 47k on it last March for $14,700. I'll list some of my qualms that I've discovered in my first few months of ownership.

You might notice a rough sounding start for 1-3 seconds, this is normal. May be reduced with a high quality synthetic oil. The suspension is a bit stiff if that's not your thing. Also, the '09 doesn't do Bluetooth audio, but does want your phone to connect via BT for calls. Kind of frustrating, but limits you to the better sounding AUX connection from device to stereo for music. Also the USB port in the center console does not charge any iPhone I've ever put on it: 4S, 5C, 5S, 6. So You'll need a 12V outlet charger to charge your device.

As mentioned some bells and whistles are missing - Adaptive cruise would be nice, lane departure warning would be annoying. I would think that most premium accessory kinks would have been worked out by the 7 years/66k miles mark, if they work now you should be Ok.

You'll likely need to replace the rear dome light if it's bad, and it's not a cheap fix. Check the dome lights and make sure they work steadily without flickering. If not, count on a $275 part (rear dome assy) being necessary to replace. Hyundai V2'd that part at some point in time, the older one is cheaper but prone to failure.

Oh if you're testing WOT acceleration from 0, try to go from stop into throttle about halfway for around 1 second, then full throttle for best response (as opposed to going from 0-100% open immediately, this seems sluggish compared to method above). Disabling ESC (stability control) isn't truly disabling it entirely so using the above method to accelerate will break the tires loose, ESC will still correct your traction just not as bad as if it were engaged.

Make sure the tranny is shifting smoothly through all gears. Mine is smooth as butter and if it weren't I'd surely have passed on it.

If I think of anything else I'll post here again but my first 4 months with my '09 have been pleasureable.

Hey Reemusk,

I recently bought a 2011 Genesis 4.6 in March, and have had nothing but fun driving this.

The only "issues" I've ran into are: My front windows not being able to roll down. Fixed this buy just disconnecting the battery for a few mins.

NO bluetooth streaming. As someone who listens to a lot of Spotify in the car, this was an annoyance at first. But I've gotten use to just using the AUX jack.

My driverside AC blows warmer then the passenger side, which I'm going to have looked at next week.

Other then that, no other mechanical defects have hit me. Car has plenty of power, and love to sip on gas

Same with mine. However, I purchased a BT receiver that plugs into the Aux jack just for streaming, Slacker in my case. The phone can make multiple BT connections at the same time, so you don't give up the BT phone to the car.

Which one did you purchase and do you have to turn it on and off every time?

I had actually purchased one as well, but after using it. I got constant stutter/connection issues during songs, which irritated me lol.

Here is the one I purchased: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NMPKVRM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I ended up returning it.
