  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey all

Looking at either a '13-14 R spec 5.0 or a '15-16? 5.0. I thought there was a 5.0 in 2016 but all my searches on carguru/truecar/ifindcar/etc show 0 nationwide so maybe I'm mistaken?

Anyway, I'm trying to decide between the two generations. On one hand, I like the relative simplicity of the '13-14 and that it's significantly lighter. I drove a '13 with 49k miles and it was great. I loved it. I had no complaints with it on my test drive.

I've read the '15+ is an even better car to drive. It handles better and rides better. Is that true? Is it quieter on the highway? I'm looking for one locally to test drive. The '15+ interior seems more upscale and the panoramic sunroof seems great. But I worry about issues with the added features... I've heard the 15's have sunroof issues and body weld issues? That's what someone in the other section said when I posted a similar question.

Has anyone driven both generations that can compare/contrast? Pros/cons of each?

Thanks for any input.

2015+ is far superior. If you can find a 2016 to 2017 5.0 Ultimate, I'd say go for it.

seems weird I can't find a single 2016 5.0 for sale in a nationwide search on carguru, cars.com, truecar, autotrader, autotempest, etc.

I looked for 6 months nationwide for a 2016 5.0 and did not find one. I was told they made them but I am yet to see one. I purchased a 2015 5.0 Ultimate with 28k in april and just love it. I found it CPO and then purchased Hyaundai Warranty that covers everything for 10 years . I cant speak about the first gen Genesis, but from what I hear they are good cars also. IMO go for the 15 5.0 Ultimate CPO! Good Luck to you!

The 2015 - present versions are much superior cars, especially from a suspension standpoint. The 1st gen suffer from a lack of suspension travel in the rear, making it susceptible to bump steer on rotten pavement. A 2015 5.0 pretty much wiped the floor in handling tests vs a prev gen 5.0 R spec. I think I saw it on a Motor Trend test...

Mind sharing what you paid for that? Most cpo cars I'm finding are around 50k miles.

Even though the 15+ handles better it looms noticeably slower on paper. Its slower in every metric. 4 mph slower trap speed and also slower in the figure 8. Just the subjective handling is better. I found a non cpo car with 35k miles close by. I'll go test drive it and see what I think

I've had both (a 2012 5.0 R-Spec and my current 2015 5.0 AWD). Even though my current car is AWD it is simply more pleasurable to drive than my 2012. The suspension is a huge step up in refinement when dealing with less than perfect road surfaces, the dreaded "nanny" can actually be turned COMPLETELY off should you want to hang the tail out and have some fun which couldn't be done on my 2012 unless you pulled a fuse. Both radar cruise and regular cruise are included where my 2012 only had radar cruise. Improvements in ergonomics and information. Cooled passenger seat on the 15 where the 12 only had a driver's cooled seat. In my case, having a option of AWD with this beast was a main selling point which is not an option for the USA (at least for that year). That being said, I was pleasantly surprised with the many other improvements this car presented. Hell, even the Genesis puddle lights are intriguing! How infantile I know...

Things I didn't like as much on the 2015 - Backup camera is not as high def, rear end styling looks too much like a Accent/Sonota, wheels looked nicer on the R-Spec, not quite as good on fuel - although the weight of AWD is worth it, panorama sunroof is starting to rattle - although the additional feeling of space and light is worth finding a solution, stereo does not have as much sub-bass punch - not a big issue for my taste in music.

Good luck on your decision! You can't lose with either year. I think these vehicles are fantastic bargains new let alone used.

That was my thought as well. Hard to go wrong with either. The previous gen cars are cheaper to buy and own. So maybe an arguably better value even if arguably not a better car.

Either gen is LEAPS ahead of my Mazdaspeed 3 in terms of ride quality.

Does the 15 feel slower than the 12 to you in terms of rolling acceleration?

Sorry, I can't figure out how to private message.

Can you expand on the difference in generations? Is the interior noise in the gen 2 significantly quieter on the highway? Does the car feel slower with the added weight?

There are lots of nice little enhancements on the 15. I'd say the interior noise on all 3 Genesis sedans I've owned have been about the same on the highway. It is a very quiet automobile on the highway. My car definitely does NOT feel slower even though it has some additional weight with the AWD system (apparently slower on paper with ideal conditions). What frustrated me about the 12 was that in many cases it was simply unable to utilize all that nice V8 power by either spinning its wheels or hopping after hitting rough road surfaces under load. The AWD system combined with a more refined suspension is clearly more planted to the road surface under acceleration. It's most evident when powering around a corner from a stop. The 15 just goes while the 12 would spin, traction control would step in with brakes and reduced power then re-engage after a second only to repeat. Frustrating with all that engine power available and very noticeable to the driver.
Smaller integrations on the 15 include things like... heated steering wheel button is on the centre console (instead of hidden behind the steering wheel), heated wheel shows on the dash when turned on and off, heads up display is awesome and wouldn't want to be without it now, suspension upgrade is evident when encountering a rough road or twisties - the active suspension works well (electrically computer controlled), LED fog lights and LED daytime running lights around the main headlights look fresh, wallet keycard along with reg key fobs were standard equip, better feel to the leather and both front seats are heated/cooled (the 12 had drivers seat only cooled), natural open pore wood trim is very high class, suede headliner just like Porche), split top centre console is better because it can be opened even if the passenger is leaning on it, dimming the dash at night works on all interior lights including the 9" screen (separate on prior models), electric open and close for the trunk lid is upper line, built in sunshades in rear doors, drivers seat has more adjustments including thigh extension like BMW, autonomous braking is so much safer, cruise that can come to a complete stop and restart by hitting resume, lane keeping ability to reduce fatigue on longer trips, more comfortable head rests, auto bright headlights are nice too.

This is just a list off the top of my head. There are probably a few more that I haven't thought of, but you get the idea and why I switched from my 12 to the 15.

That heated steering wheel is the only thing I miss on 5.0 RWD!
