Hi All,

I am new to the forum and this is my first post in here. I was recently looking into getting myself into 2012 Genesis 3.8. Here is the car that I am interested in:

Cargurus - 2012 Genesis 3.8

I haven't got to test drive the car since I wanted to stop by here and ask you guys if there are any specific things that I should look at when test driving this car. Car currently has 45k miles on it and the color combination is just perfect for me.

The reason why I am looking into Genesis is that I am looking into reliable luxury car. I currently drive 2001 Audi A8L with 214k miles on it and I had the car for past 5 years (check my signature link if you want to see how great the car looks. You won't believe that it has 214k miles on it). It is amazing car and has all the features you could get that year except parking sensors. That car is my hobby but I am looking into something more reliable as a daily driver.

About two weeks ago I sold 2007 Audi A6 4.2FSI with 82k miles that I owned for about 3 months. It was the worst car experience that I ever had in my life. I bought it with 76k miles on it and exactly after a week of ownership the car it left me stranded by the store. I had to tow it to my mechanic and $700 later I was back on the road with new High Pressure Fuel Pump. I started to hear startup and iddle rattles (Timing Chain). My mechanic wants $5,600 for the service and Audi dealership wants over $12,000 for it... It was time to say goodbye before I have to invest so much money into "preventive maintenance". I got lucky that I was able to get most of the money back for the car. I haven't done the research on that car before the purchase. Lesson learned....

Anyways, I hope that I will be able to learn something about Genesis before I buy it.

Thank you in advance!
PK

There were a few important changes on the Genesis from year 2011 to 2012. A new fuel system (GDI) that increased the horse power considerably and a new in house 8 speed transmission instead of a 6 speed out of house from 2011. Though I haven’t seen many if any complaints on the GDI system I have seen some on the first edition of the in house 8 speed. If I may make a suggestion it would be to seek out a 2013 model year as some of the problems encountered were addressed in the second year of the initial changes. Though I have seen some posts of transmission problems with 2013 there has been more of the 2012s. ;)

Ernie Thank you for your input. I went to the dealership but I had awful customer experience and they want almost $21,000 out the door. They didn't want to negotiate at all so I left. Car was nice but there was some vibration on the steering wheel at highway speed and there was some weird noise coming from the left side of the car. It did seem like bad tire or bad wheel bearing. Car had only 45k miles and tires were almost new so it was really weird.

Anyways, I ended up at another dealership and test drove 2011 4.6 that I fell in love with.

2011 Genesis 4.6 with 52k miles

I loved the car and the ride was quiet and smooth as silk. No startup rattles and no weird noises coming from the engine. Car idles very quietly.

The only thing that I don't like about it is that there is no warranty that comes with the car.

Would there be any reason why shouldn't get myself into this V8? Starting Out the door price is $19,900 and I am sure that I can get it down a bit.

Thank you in advance!

I did a test drive of both the 3.8 and 5.0 Genesis and either one is definitely not a slow car. But I strongly recommend, if getting a 3.8, get one with the Technology package, it will have back-up camera, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning system which are great features to have, and it should not cost you much more to find a Genesis 3.8 fully loaded than one that is not. That one you posted is nice but lacks the technology package, I strongly suggest getting one that has it, well worth it. But that being said, get the Genesis.

That's a much better choice, it has the packages and options I mentioned, looks great in black with the light colored interior, the same color combination mine is which I specifically looked for on both counts. You can bargain for a good price and get a good deal on that Genesis.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I really love that color combination and I love the car. The only thing I need to find out is if it still has that 10 years/100k miles powertrain warranty. I don't want to spend $19,000 for a car with no warranty.

Also, how does the maintenance look for v8? Is there a big difference between 3.8 and 4.6? Does the V8 require more attention? I want to make sure that I buy a car where I won't have to invest any money into engine out the door like I did with my previous 07 Audi A6 V8 4.2FSI.

I appreciate your help guys!

Edited:

I just did some research and found out that 100k warranty applies only to the first owner... Well, since the car comes with no warranty I will need to re-think it.

The vehicle in my first post comes with 60k and 100k warranties. I would just hate to go back to that dealership and work with that as#$%.

Keep looking. Whatever 3-4 year-old car you purchase, BE SURE TO buy an extended warranty. It just makes no sense to drive any cars these days that don't have at least drivetrain warranty coverage. Pay a little more and get even more extended warranty coverage, including audio/Nav components!

Thanks! I will pass on these two vehicles. I just test drove 2013 Azera Limited with 47k miles on it that is certified and comes with 60k and 100k warranties and now I am in the process of negotiating the right price.

Thank you all for your help!

I loved all the features that come with Azera Limited - heated all four seats, cooled both front seats, Bluetooth Audio Streaming, cabin ambient lights, panoramic sunroof, folding back seats, rear side window shades, and bluelink.
As far as the drive it was comfortable and seems to be a bit quieter that the Genesis 3.8 I test drove yesterday. However the 4.6 I test drove yesterday was the quietest and the smoothest of all Hyundai's I test drove.
I will most likely get the Azera since it comes with all the goodies I want, it is more efficient and comes with Hyundai warranties.

I test-drove an Azera when I bought my Genesis. At a brisk 1/2 to 2/3 throttle acceleration, there was no comparison. The Genesis was so much more smoother and quiet. The Azera didn't compare at all.

The Azera looks very nice but I didn't test drive one. Before getting a Genesis I wanted to test drive one to see if I like it. A friend challenged me to also test drive a Chrysler 300 and a Dodge Charger. So in the process I did test drives of a Genesis 3.8, a Chrysler 300 with V6, a Dodge Charger with 5.7 liter V8, and the Genesis 5.0

The Chargers was a nicer car than I expected, but I found the Genesis 5.0 to be the choice of all of them.

I think that if I test drove brand new Azera and brand new Genesis, the Genesis would definitely be much better car. Both cars are used with different mileage and different tires. That changes everything. I am so undecided now...

The Azera is a nice car I'm sure, but if your heart is set on getting a Genesis, do it. Don't leave any chance that you'll like the Azera but be thinking "I could have had a Genesis" and there be any chance you wish you got the Genesis. Back in 2008 I traded in my 2007 Maxima for the newly re-designed 2009 Maxima, but what I really wanted at the time was a G37 Infiniti.

This time around, after my test drives, I went with the Genesis. If you'll be totally happy with the Azera, go for it. But if you have any doubts, go with a Genesis 3.8 that has all the packages, or assure yourself of that by going at least with the Genesis 4.6. I assure you, you will not regret getting the Genesis.

Last Saturday I pulled the trigger and bought CPO 2013 Azera Limited with 49k miles. Could not be happier with the car. Great handling and mpg's compare to my pervious 07 Audi A6 V8... However, I know that my next car will be the 2015 Genesis ;-)

It's still a great choice. Enjoy driving the Azera for 2-2.5 years then trade in for a 2015 Genesis turned in after a 3 year lease, and you'll get a great car again.

That is my plan! :)
