  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello Everyone,
Long time lurker, first time poster. Need advise/feedback please.

Been looking to buy a Genesis R-spec 5.0 for a while and finally found one local (Canadian). Had a local mechanic check the car and he found no issues except for some electrical related that pertains to a circuit related to defrost ( but he wasn't able to confirm it 100%). My only concern is that some of the earlier models had oil consumption issues so how can i verify that? Mechanic I toke it to said, it doesn't seem to be an issue here. I ran my finger around the exhaust tips and noticed slightly oily residue. Its not like anything was dripping out of the exhaust so i wasn't sure if this indicates that the car is burning oil or something related to fuel not fully burned or if that's just how the 5.0's are?? Other then that the car is in excellent condition cosmetically and has been stored for winters since new

Vehicle Information:
2012 Rspec 5.0 with 73km, one owner. Production date: June 17/12

Thank You

One thing to keep in mind. The ‘12 year R-Spec will not stream Bluetooth audio. Neither will other ‘12 Technology package models. Basic and Premium package models do stream BT audio. That was one reason I bought a Premium package model in Dec. 2011. It’s running great today and still has 9 months left on its extended warranty.

IIRC the oil burn issues with the piston rings were in early model year 2012 5.0 engines made in 2011, and I'm confident the oil burn issues were well sorted out before June of 2012. The mega thread is here if you want to read it:

Sooty tailpipes are quite common on early and mid-20-teens GDI cars, and even my non-GDI 4.6's have to be wiped down during washes. So yeah, tailpipes get sooty.

If your mechanic did not diagnose the electrical issues, then it's probably worth another hundred or two dollars to take it to the best automotive electrician in your area and pay for a proper diagnosis.
