If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello everybody, Im currently looking to purchase a Luxury Sedan, after some extensive research I came across the Hyundai Genesis SDN. At first I was torn between the Lexus LS460, and the Hyundai Equus. But I am currently steering toward the Genesis now. Questioning its reliability. Is this vehicle long lasting? with regular maintenance can it exceed 200k+ miles? I understand there are few minor problems w this model electrical being one. But Engine and Trans wise, can these cars reach high mileage, w proper care and maintenance

I've had my 2015 5.0 for 18 months so far and my understanding is that the engine and transmission are generally pretty reliable (knock on wood). There are a few general problems which I can summarize below. Others may correct me of course.

(1) vibration/fluttering when driving at speeds from about 28-40 mph, most likely (IMO) caused by a rubber component in the drivetrain. It goes away after 5-10 minutes for most people, but it appears to be very common.
(2) Head units seem to be a bit prone to fail. These cost about $3000 new to replace, but you may be able to get a junk one. Still, it needs to be programmed with the GDS though.
(3) Various rubber bits tend to dissolve. I include the rubber around the third brake light and the trunk release button.
(4) Backup camera wiring tends to fray at a location in harness in the trunk, causing failure of the camera.
(5) These are GDI engines, so you'll will eventually need the intake manifold removed and the valves media blasted. Some on this board advocate catch cans, some advocate intake valve cleaner, etc. I'm lazy and just try to use high quality synthetic oil.
(6) The pain quality on the front bumper is not the best, as is the tendency of the roof panels (on Genesis with the pano roof) to oxidize and not look great.
(7) Unless you're super handy, in my opinion this is a dealer only car. It's pretty high tech. There are a ton of sensors and modules and if they go bad, it's usually big $$$$. I really hope mine isn't as maintenance needy as a BMW or Mercedes.

That said, I love this car so far. I'm a big guy and for me it's an old school luxury sedan. The 5.0 gives it an obnoxious amount of power, but I find that I needed it after driving the 3.8. It is fun to race mustangs and hang with them. I raced a BMW X3 the other night. i had no idea those things were that fast!

As they used to say - "Your mileage may vary..."

My 2015 5.0 Ultimate w/ 82k hasn't had all those issues above & it stays outside for the most part, and I've never had issues w/ the drivetrain. I am religious on keeping clean oil though as it lessens the tendency for GDI (regardless of brand) engines to have excessive carbon build up.

My only issues -
- My head unit was replaced @ 20k by the previous owner
- A/C quit @ 70k. I removed & reinserted all HVAC related fuses. Returned to service. Dealer tech said the fuses occasionally work themselves loose over time.
- Driver's side middle vent occasionally attempts to roast me with hot air (maybe 1 in a 100 starts). A stop & restart puts it right.

Other than above, no problems. This car is way more reliable than my Infiniti G37s sedan which ate an A/C compressor, both cam position sensors, both throttle bodies (replaced in pairs) and a water pump during it's 55k tenure... If it hadn't been so fun, it wouldn't have lasted that long.

I personally would stay away from an Equus. They don't seem to be as solid bodywise. I also cross shopped a LS460. Nice car, and you prob wouldn't spend a dime outside of regular maintenance. But it just didn't drive as well as the Genesis. Not as quick either.

I bought my 2015 as a demo in 2016 and plan on keeping it long term. It's my 4th Genesis sedan. I've been so impressed with the quality vs price that I even purchased a 2010 V6 Genesis for a winter beater. After looking at the market, I just couldn't find a better overall car for the money - and I know they last. Many of the older used ones here in Canada have over 300,000 Km's on them and they for the most part look and drive like new. Impressive.

Yes, with all the tech in these cars, something expensive could go but I wouldn't be afraid to search for used parts and have a local shop do the work which keeps the costs reasonable long term. Dealerships are scary places for a reason.
