  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I was pleasantly surprised when my low fuel warning light came on to see the center console flashes a text warning too and asks if it could show the nearest gas stations in the nav screen. I think this is an excellent use of technology.

Also, I noticed when the fuel gauge was down to a few bars, that the last few bars disappeared quite quickly. It appears the fuel gauge display is not linear.

Nice. Do you remember by any chance how much gallon of gas did you fill in her after you saw the low fuel light. I know the book says 20 gallon. But just want to know how much it takes in really life.
I never got a chance to check, will do next week.

When my low fuel light came on the computer said there was about 40 miles to go. Depending on when I filled up it took anywhere from 17-18 gallons. so there is room to go after 0 miles.

Mine was down to 12 miles to go yesterday and it took 17.8 to fill it (not trying to top off - the pump auto-shut off at that point).

fyi....the showing of the gas stations when the fuel is low is part of the Sirius data program and will not work if you are not subscribed.

Not too sure about that as I am not subscribed and my trial is long over yet it works fine. ;) Why would sirius have anything to do with this? All this info is in the GPS unit, not sirius.

I sometimes take chances as I know these fuel gauges do not die at 0 miles to go. In fact I have taken several cars to well past 0 miles remaining and would say I can safely go at least 20 miles on any of them so don't freak out when you see only a few miles to go.

That will have 4 gallons of gas left after the Low Fuel light shows up.

Our light went on yesterday, and we probably drove another 20 miles or so. Today we filled up and it took 17.6 gal. So, there is probably about 50 miles available once the glow fuel light comes on.

My light came on this morning with 33 miles left till empty. I filled the tank and it took 17 gallons even. That means the tank had 3.34 gallons of fuel in it when the light came on. That equates to 61.89 miles of drive time compared to the 33 miles noted on the computer that I could drive based on my calculated MPG of 18.53 this morning. Fuel tank capacity is 20.34 gallons.

A question is how much of that 20.34 gallons is actually accessible - likely not 100% of it!

Lots of talkin' here. Take a gallon of gas with you & drive till you're empty. Add the 1 gallon, then fill up at a nearby gas station. Used to do the same with all my cars. I love to stay away from gas stations, often filled with only a gallon left & never worried about running out of fuel.

Sorry - but that makes no sense to me. Carry a gallon of gas around in your car all the time? So it can eventually stink up your car? Or be an extra ignition source in an accident? Folks here are just discussing how far they might be able to push it if need be - not actually trying to drive to empty! I've been driving for 35 years and I've never run out of gas as you learn the limits of each vehicle you drive.

Like yours my low fuel light came on and my distance to empty (DTE) showed 33 miles to empty like yours. Keep in mind that the DTE number is calculated by the driving conditions you were at when the low fuel light first came on. If you were doing your best impression of 'Speed Racer' or 'Little Old Lady' expect radically different DTE numbers and shorter or longer times before you get to try out your Roadside Assistance feature ;).

I expect he meant do it *once*, so you know what to expect in the future.

Does anyone know if the fuel pump can be damaged if the tank is almost empty?

Not sure about the configuration of our car but generally the fuel pump resides in the gas tank and is kept cool by the fuel. I guess it would depend how much of the pump is exposed and for how long. So it’s something to bear in mind.

The fuel pump assembly is immersed in fuel at the bottom of your fuel tank. The pump relies on fuel for cooling and lubrication of the pump. IMHO running the fuel level low over the long term will cause undue damage to your fuel pump.
