Low intensity howling sound

I just had rear rotors replaced under warranty. Thread here:

When I picked the car up, I immediately noticed a low volume, medium pitch, whooooooooooooooooooooo sound while driving. It occurs at all speeds and doesn't change pitch or volume, and is not affected by accelerating or braking. It sounds almost like poor tire wear noises or an early sign of a failing bearing (although bearing noise usually varies with speed).
I have no idea what it is, but it's very annoying. Dealer said they'd look at it when I go back for the front rotors.
Anyone have any ideas? It's not wind noise either...

Tire wear noise will change with speed as well, at least from what I've seen. Sounds like they screwed something up though. Keep us posted on the resolution.

most noises would respond to speed or wind. Could it be related to the A/C. Try turning off your radio and your a/c to narrow it down.

If they left any under body panels and guards loose, they could vibrate as you describe. The resonating harmonic (tone) would stay the same, but get louder with speed. And the tone would sound like a howl or a gigantic one-note harmonica. Wild guess and speculation here, but easy to check.

It's is loudest at 55km/h and 95-105km/h. Two other occupants have heard it and agree it is abnormal. I'll report back once the dealer looks into it... still waiting on the front rotors to arrive before they will make an appt.

where would you say the sound is coming from? the front, back, low down?

did you try turning off the a/c?

I heard a air, whooshing sound in my lexus for weeks before i figured out it was the ventilated seat on the passenger side that was on. When no one is sitting there, it's audible, but just barely.

Just an update. They replaced the front rotors too back in July for the same reason as the rears. They also thought they might be causing the noise. This wasn't the case and I asked them to expedite the tire recall in case it could be easily fixed with the new tires. I never heard back so I took the car in today to have the noise looked at. Sure enough, they think it is tire noise and will swap the tires this week. Hopefully my howling will disappear.

Not to pre-judge the result of changing from the Hankooks to the Michelins, but my experience is that the Michelins are noisier, especially on secondary roads with a more course surface.

Either way, it shouldn't be worse. This is not normal tire noise by any means. There is obviously a defect in my hankooks regardless of the recall and I want the howl out of my car. Especially since it wasn't there until they started playing around with my brakes. If it doesn't go away, at least we'll know that they have to dig deeper for a mechanical cause to the noise.

So if it wasn't there until they started playing around with your brakes, why would you expect changing the tires would fix the issue? It seems like the issue would have been there before the brake issue if it was the tires, No?

exactly the opposite of my observations. but, i think the michelins ride a bit rougher...
