Low-profile USB flash drives are super!

If you haven't yet picked up one of the new "low-profile" USB drives to store your audio, do so pronto. San Disk and Scosche are just two of the brands out there.

The beauty of the low-profile device is that it is tiny and will not interfere with the numerous other items in your console. Also, you won't have to worry that it might break off if you toss something on top of it.

Walmart sells a 2 gig Scosche brand in the car audio section for 10 bucks. They say it holds 500 tunes. Best Buy stocks larger drives at higher cost.

absolutely. I bought one several months ago, loaded it up with music and put it in the Coupe. You have to look twice to see its really there.

Funny. I just bought a Patriot 32gig flash. it's the size of a small crouton. I could literally swallow it and poop it out without noticing. I mean 32 GIGS! paid 21.00 and got a 5.00 rebate to boot. Fryes electronics if anyone is wondering

any thumb drive / flash drive / solid state hard drive should work. The caveat is formatting it FAT32.

I think the key is not using a mechanical hard drive that requires usb power as the owners manual warns against that. And the jostling around would damage the drive as well.

There are a number of shareware programs out there that will help you format your thumb / flash/ SSHD / just be careful where you download it from.

Except that most flash drives are not what we are promoting in this thread. The low profile style won't break off in your console.

Just got a couple of Mini USB SanDisk Cruzer 8GB off of Ebay for 9.66 each. They work beautifully in the Genesis. Thanks for the info, I've learned so much on this forum. Charlie

Yes, I have a 32GB low profile drive for my music. The drawback is that it quite difficult to extract it, due to USB port's proximity to the walls of the console well.
Hard to get my fingers on it to wiggle it out.

51 CD's @ 320kbps. I know I can fit another 30 on there easy!

If you put everything in folders the right way, and make sure to label stuff, it makes going through your top CD collection a pleasure!

Doesn't sound as good as the DVD-A's, of course, but it's way better than my last car's audio system! And you can't even tell it's there. I was always afraid of breaking the other USB flash drive I used (2GB) 'cause I'm always throwing my wallet in the console. No longer!

Get one. You won't be sorry.

I was seriously considering adding a portable HDD before, but there is no way I'll do it now. a) there is no need for that much space - It'll take me a year to listen to 50 CD's with a 4 mile commute, and b) there would be power issues with the HDD anyway - plus skipping!

solid-state hard drives are " self powered". Picture a bunch of 32gig flash drives daisy chained together.... just about un destructible and about the size of a laptop drive or iPhone/smartphone. the upside is you can always barrow music from a friend because you have some extra space....

Mine plays mp3 and WMA files. You need at least one music file in a folder. What is on your flash drive? How is the drive formatted? FAT 32, or NFTS? It should be FAT 32. Also note that it takes the drive a few moments to load. The bigger the drive, the slower it loads.
