Making DRL on US model compliant for import to Canada

We are in the process of importing our U.S. 2016 Genesis (3.8L V6) into Canada and have hit an issue with Daytime Running Lights (DRL). The local Hyundai dealers are not aware of a solution.

The car does have DRL. However, the inspection facility indicated we have an issue because it can be switched off manually. The light controls lever on the left side of steering column has the settings for lights (On, Auto, etc.) that includes "DRL Off". The inspection facility believes that is a Fail.



The only option appears to be an after market modification to bypass the feature. We will not take that option as it is known to cause other major problems and also void our U.S. warranty.



Please let me know if you are aware of a viable solution.

Black out the lettering with a marker and go to a different inspection station.

Is there a way to block the switch from going to that position? Drill a pin or epoxy a stop.

Since the "believe" it is a fail, check the actual requirements as it may be an exception on imported cars by individuals.

Thinking about this, it is possible to replace the switch with a Canadian version? If so, that would be the cleanest solution.

swap the stalk out for the Canadian one that doesn't have the DRL off option, you won't be able to turn them off, which in Canada you can't anyway.

I suspect the price is around $40-$50 for the part and it takes about 20 minutes to do, I've done this on Chryslers and GM for customers in the past, Remove airbag, remove steering wheel, remove clock-spring and swap in the replacement stalk..

Dealership can likely to it, not sure if they will because the part isn't mated to your VIN.

Had to check my 2016,never realized it had that option on the stalk.ya I’d just black it out with a felt marker and hope they don’t notice it.
OTOH why would you turn them off in the 1st place?

This is the problem we run into for importing when one country has tighter regulations over another. And it's going to get worse, seeing as how Transport Canada is going after 'phantom vehicles.' (Cars that have no lights on in the dark.) To be fair, that has been an issue for a very long time. But this is going to be another headache for importation.

That seems to be dumb drivers that don't turn lights on as needed. That can be fixed by wiring and is probably a minority. They should come up with a way to teach people to use turn signals. There are many drivers that don't bother with them.

I think the only solution is to change the headlight stalk to a Canadian version and it would have to be done by a Canadian dealer as the parts are not available in the US.
Hyundai US and Canada are 2 separate entities and have no synergies or commonalities.
I have a 2013 Canadian car here in the US and the both the dealers and Hyundai US have no record of my car existing and the same goes for Hyundai Canada.
Note your only warranty will be through the US. You can have the work done in Canada but you will have to pay for it and file a claim with Hyundai US for reimbursement.

Thank you for your responses. We had another conversation with Vancouver Genesis and they're going to install a relay of some sort to bypass the DRL off setting while keeping our warranty intact. Fingers crossed!

Hello, I’m in the process on importing into Canada a US 2017 G80 and am concerned with the DRL issue. Did you find a solution ? Thanks for sharing
