Does the G70 Owner Guide discuss how to manually upshift and downshift properly for performance or economy? It seems that sometimes the automatic shift feature overrides manual shifting. I looked in the guide for help with manual shifting but found none. Probably just missed that section.

Get a feel for it. Drive in ECO mode for a while and notice shift point. Then drive in Sport for a while too.

There is no rule that says for optimum always shift at this RPM. The tranny is overriding you because it thinks a different rpm is better than what you suggested. Too high a gear can cause the engine to lug and perform poorly even though the driver may think it more economical. Same as Sport keep you in a lower gear even when cruising at moderate speed as the higher rpm will help with acceleration.

If you want to shift for yourself, get a car with manual transmission. Won't take long to figure it out. The paddles on an auto are not anywhere near the fun. Only time I use them is going down a long hill to pop it down a gear.

I just totaled my previous sled - 2016 Mustang GT 6-speed manual that I loved. Needed to get something my wife, daughters and valet car parkers could drive, so I had to part with "Bullitt." The G70 may be fractions quicker 0 to 60, but it just isn't as much fun without that third pedal.

Good choice for circumstances, however, the paddles will never be the same as that metal rod coming out of the floor.
Don't want it for my every day driver, but once in a while, it is fun to play with a stick.
 
You need to switch to sport mode so tranny stays in manual mode when using the paddles. Unfortunately, it always reverts to D when almost stopped (like <5 mph), so you have to click the left paddle to put it in '1' again. Otherwise, you might upshift to '2' at the same time the tranny is upshifting to '2', and you end up in '3', with no power. Now it's almost 2nd nature to click the left paddle when coming to a stop. I haven't red-lined my car yet, but I'm almost sure it'd upshift to the next gear, rather than bouncing off the limiter. Maybe in sport+ it might, but it's a slow car, so I don't feel 'racy' to use it like that. Nor does it sound nice, so drive it mostly sedately... which is good for my driver's license. Ha ha.

Very good information, JCtx, and I don't recall seeing that in a manual. (I get the sense that you're a Texan, like me.)
 
Yeah, El Paso here, which is barely TX. Ha ha. You? And yes, Korean manuals are the worst, for some reason. Maybe the translation, but many explanations don't make sense, and there are a lot of details missing. Oh, and when in manual mode, you can revert back to D two ways: Pulling the shifter to D, or pulling the right paddle for a second or so, which is my preferred way when I want to do that. Originally from El Paso, myself, but live in Houston.

I like the G70. Nothing about it wows me yet. Maybe after the unusually long break-in period it might reveal its speed and agility. Hoping for that.
