  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Metal shavings found in oil / oil pan.

If covered under warranty, go for it. If you have to pay, get a second opinion. I'm not qualified to give an opinion other than that.

Can you drop a V8 in it? Sure. Will it run? Not so easy. Back in the day it was common to trop a big V8 into an older car no matter the brand. Hemi in a Model A or '53 Ford pickup was common. Today, there are computers and a load of electronics to match up. If is far more than a few hundred bucks upgrade.
I bought my 2015 3.8 used recently with about 45k miles on it. How can I make sure mine doesn't have metal shavings in the oil or oil pan? Should i ask the shop to check for that next time I get an oil change here in a couple of weeks?

The only way to tell if your oil pan have metal shavings would be to pull the lower oil pan and do a visual inspection. However, with your engine only having 45k miles of use I doubt that it would have any metal shavings if the engine is running well.

There is another, less extreme way. This will also pick up on the stuff that you can't see.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!

An oil test "should" will pick-up any minute wear metals suspended in the oil, but the best way to really tell if the engine is healthy is to pull the lower oil pan and also insect the oil pickup for debris like broken timing chain guide pieces.

It's a craps shoot. I wish you luck.

Also, no reason to suspect shavings unless you've got some noises too...which is the reason why I had mine even looked at.

UPDATE #2: MONDAY 11/21/2022

1. Dealership I purchased from (non Hyundai/genesis) in So Cal paid for shipping and the car was delivered last week
2. Talked to the dealership Friday night and as anticipated, they couldn't replicate the noise, they did not find any metal shavings, and they wanted to send it to a Genesis shop for a 2nd opinion
3. I drove down Saturday because I wanted to make sure the noise was still present and to demonstrate it to them. But they already sent it to another dealership. To a Hyundai dealership nearby.
4. That Hyundai dealership has not looked at yet, but I was able to test drive it and the noise was still there and easily replicated.
5. Waiting to hear back as to what the Hyundai dealership says

An interesting aspect: For some reason, the GM at the dealership I purchased it from, thinks it MUST be looked at by a Genesis shop (as opposed to a Hyundai shop). And he thought his people sent it to a Genesis shop, but was surprised to hear it went to another Hyundai shop.

Thread with the noise I recorded this weekend:

I think that only some Hyundai dealers (the ones with specifically trained mechanics) are allowed to service Genesis (allowed as in Genesis will pay them for warranty work).

That makes sense and I would understand that. But in this case.....I don't think it's going to be paid by genesis. I have no warranty with them. And, it's a 2015 Hyundai....so isn't that still a Hyundai. I looked on the car fax and the hyundai dealership where it currently is at has been servicing it under the previous owner.

Maybe he's just blowing smoke as it was a hyundai dealership up here that initially said I need a new engine - and maybe he thinks since they are hyundai, they aren't qualified to make that diagnosis.

I don't know. We shall see.

Hyundai and Genesis is one and the same. Therefore, Genesis will not pay Hyundai for any repair work done on a Genesis model. Any certified Hyundai technician can work on your sedan or any Genesis model by referring to the official service manuals.

The problem is that many of the Hyundai dealerships or even Genesis service technicians will not much have experience working on the 2015-2020 Genesis models since they are fairly new and are now probably beginning to need major servicing. Therefore, it may take a while before the dealership techs get really good at trouble shooting engine issues with these engines without just replacing engine/transmission as the sole solution.

Recent article. Not decent article.

A decent article (linked below) says that Hyundai/ Kia are facing major liability over their engines. Problems include metal shavings in the oil. Reward almost all the way down to where it states that the issues affect almost all cars sold by Hyundai/ Kia for 2009 - 2021. Hyundai and Kia's Decade of Very Troublesome Engines Continues
I think Hyundai/KIA engines are designed well, but it seems that Hyundai(Genesis) have issues with manufacturing quality control, part supply(5.0 engines), and other detailed aspects of the company such as technical manuals and customer service which make owing one a risk pass the warranty period.

The issues with Hyundai is usually forgivable on the cheaper models cars sold, but can be a serious problem on the more expensive Genesis models that revival the more expensive luxury brands like Lexus, Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, etc in purchase pricing and service cost. However, even then Hyundai issues would only be problem for someone who buys a used Genesis model or own one pass 100k miles without a warranty. Leasers will not even have an issue with a Genesis most likely since they will trade it out by 60k miles while still under warranty if a problem does occur.

Just closing the loop on this. Its been about a year and the reason I haven't updated was I had to file a lawsuit. So the summary is for anyone who doesn't want to read the thread:

1. Bought a used car October 1, of 2022
2. Had some noises coming from the engine
3. 3 different shops said I needed a new engine
4. Selling dealership continued to say everything was fine
5. Selling dealership did not want to honor the warranty / pay for my engine
6. Hired a law firm
7. Got all my money back and a little sugar on top for the troubles

So instead of paying $15k to $20k to make things right, the dealership not only had to pay me back for the car, reimburse me for my rentals during that time, and penalties for being difficult, I estimate they also paid about $50k to $60k in attorney's fees (both mine and their own).

There you go.

You got what you deserved. Did you get a replacement car? What did you buy?

Score +1 for the "little guy"....!

I actually replaced it with an acura MDX. I really wanted to have the utility once I retired my outback.

Yup. I agree. But still...what a mess.

So it was a short stint on this forum but I do plan on getting another Genesis in the future so hopefully I'll be back.
