Michelin Primacy Tour A/S tire - impressions

Anyone that got the primacy tours does your sidewall match front and rear? I just put these on and obviously they are a staggered size, but the front had a bigger rim protector than the rear. I don't know if I should let it bother me or not
 
My G90 experienced the same highway vibration issue as what others have reported here previously.

No matter what is the root cause, fundamentally speaking the vibration is caused by frequency resonance between the car body and something which is rotational and imbalanced. Yes unfortunately, the way how Hyundai designs the G90's body frame, makes its primary (1st-degree) natural harmonic resonant frequency falls within the range of something rotating at 60+ mph.

As a side note: it takes a lot of technical expertise of an automaker to design/build the car body right - one of the challenges is to push the car body resonant frequency out of the speed range that a "normal" customers typically will encounter. This is especially hard for cars with longer wheelbase.

For G90, the excitation of the resonance may come from the tire, the wheel, or the driveshafts, or combinations of them. From the way how the G90 vibrates, and how the vibration changes on various road conditions/speed, I feel the tire may be one of the major culprit and should be looked into as the first step.

Before that, I have already done road force balance on the OEM tire (Conti ProContact), no help at all. Since the compound used by the ProContact tires are very hard (feels almost like a rock instead of rubber), I suspect it generates transient flat spots which won't have enough time to recover if rotating fast enough, therefore when the tire is rotating at highway speed, for section that is not touching the ground, it is still not round, which causes the imbalance.

I pulled the trigger and swap the OEM Conti tires with the Michelin today because I have heard a lot of good stories about the Primacy Tour tires.

A couple unique (good) things about the Michelin tire:

- They have higher load rating than the factory OEM ones (102/105 v.s 98/101). The G90 is a heavy sedan (even heavier than some mid-size SUVs), the OEM tires are in fact too weak, especially the front tires.
- Both the front and rear tires are made in France, same factory same compound (For Michelin same tire same size, different country of origin still have slightly variance in terms of compound and geometry - some people on Porsche/BMW forums have done extensive comparison and research)
- Look at Michelin's product catalogue, for Primacy Tour A/S of these specific sizes, both of them have the "GOE" label (you can also see these letters molded on the side wall), which means "Genesis OEM". Since only the G90 is using these sizes, it further indicates these tires are specially designed for the G90.

I have only driven about 20 miles after changing the tire so I do not have a full review at this moment. For now I can only say 90% of the vibration has gone. I still feel"faint" vibrations on some under-maintained section of the road, which surface is non-flat and sometimes rough. I will report more findings as I accumulate more miles on these tires.

I have been delighted with the Michelin Primacy A/S installed on my 2017 G90 AWD. Will have new ones installed next month.

I have the Michelin Primacy A/S tires on my 2017 G90 Ultimate 5.0 RWD and I am completely satisfied. The tires run smooth and quiet with great handling and it has the GOE (Genesis Original Equipment) stamp on the tires. As mentioned before the mileage will suffer with a staggered setup but the trade off is having people compliment on how smooth and quiet the vehicle is. When it's time to replace, i will not hesitate to go with the same tire.

My G90 will need tires by spring. The first owner put the Pilot Sport 4 All Season tires on it. Very smooth, only minimal vibration at speed (but they are on their last leg, so that's to be expected), and despite the low tread, was not terrible in light snow. Took off well, just not the best at stopping LOL. Would love to hear from people who have used multiple or all of the popular options for the G90, the continental DWS, Primacy, and Pilot sport 4 all season.

Since the G90 eats tires, I will most likely run a snow tire for half the year, so comfort will be my priority with whatever purchase.
 
I just replaced my tires last week. Based on a recommendation from this forum (can't recall who referred them, but thanks), I went with Kumho Solus TA31. I've only driven with them twice and not on the Xway yet. They feel great and are relatively quiet. Also, I live in the mid south and we rarely get snow. When Discount Tire showed me some side by side comparison of other brands, these held up very well in all categories. And of course, the price is much better.

It looks like the Conti DWS06 is the most popular choice on this forum. I went from the Michelin Pilot Sport 3 A/S to the Michelin Primacy A/S. I prefer the Primacy's because I prioritize a smooth ride over sporty handling.

Yeah, from everything I have been reading, if you are looking for the smoothest, most comfortable ride for the G90 - the Primacy A/S is the tire to get.

Can confirm that the Pilot Sport's float on the snow, even with AWD. If you are switching tires with the seasons, you may want to consider Kuhmo if want to save some money.
 
My GV60P came with Primacy A/S tires. I am 15 months in. I plan to replace them at around 2 years or so with Pilot tires (either 4S or A/S--I haven't decided yet) to get better handing.

Thank you for the inputs and advice! Yea, the tires are too wide not to float.. so I'll need the snow tires in the winter for sure as it's my commuter car. But looking forward to how improved the ride is on the Primacy. I'm coming out of a Jag F-pace, very harsh ride.. so I'm very grateful for the G90 =)
 
An update on this thread: Just had the Primacy Tour A/S put on. Initial impressions over some very worn Pilot Sport 4 A/S-

Much softer in terms of you feel you "float" more. Minor road imperfections are reduced I would say a solid 80% over the Sport A/S. Still feel the larger bumps but certainly reduced about 50%.

The highway so far (65 plus in the dreaded shimmy range): about 70% quieter and the vibrations are reduced by about that as well.

Overall certainly a tire fitting of the G90, I would just not expect it to eliminate road feel altogether. Will slap on snow tires next winter.
 
Update: I decided not to keep the Kuhmos. I went back with Continentals. They are being ordered.

I felt they were noisy and a very soft outer wall. I wasn't real comfortable driving them, especially turning. Discount Tires never asked a question, they offered to take them back and put Conti's on for a few hundred more. Should have them next week.

Thanks! I was curious about these since they are a cheap option for the G90. I put a lot of miles on my car, and with the staggered setup, frequent tire changes are expensive.

Yes. Plus according to discount tire they have shorter life down.

I will be replacing some Michelin Primacy tires in a month or so. They have been fine but I like a more aggressive tread design. Not as confident with the Primacy tread design...especially in wet weather. Will replace with the Continental DWS 06 Plus. Less expensive for one thing. Tire Rack did a test on the Michelin Pilot, Continental DWS 06 plus, Vredestein, and something else. Results were that all four were very good tires and that one would not go wrong with any of the four. Continental was selected as the winner. I have had Vredestein before and was very pleased. Less expensive and rode very well. Downside was tread life and had to replace. The Continental DWS will be my sixth set.
