Mileage/MPG Better Than Expected

Yesterday marked three weeks that I have my Genesis 3.8 V6. Until yesterday, following the ten mile ride home from the dealers following purchase, the only miles have been the three mile commute to the train station in the morning followd by three miles back in the evening, five days per week. That''s it! So in those short stints I average 14 mpg but who could expect more of a 10 minute commute in city traffice.

I finally was able to get behind the wheel and drive the 85 mile ride from Philadelphia to Atlantic City, drive down congested Atlantic Avenue from Atlantic City to Margate, about five miles, and then drive the 90 miles back to Philadlephia. The bulk of the trip was on I-95, NJ-42 Freeway and the Atlantic City Expressway averaging around 70 mph. The weather was in the upper 80s and there were three adults in the car. My average was 26.2 mpg. For a car that had less miles than most cars have within a few days, this far from broken in V6 was quite good and I see no reason that once there are a few thousand miles driven, I shouldn't be able to get at least 28 to 29 mpg on the highway. In city driving for short stints will likely never see better than 14 or 15 mpg but hat's to be expected.

Down in Atlantic City I was pleased as drivers in the next lane eyed my car and parking lot valets treated me as an obvious high roller by the car I drive!

After a year of ownership I have to say I'm a bit disappointed in the fuel-economy of the V6, at least in city driving. On the open highway I get 28-29, but in my normal driving (90% city/10% freeway) I get only 18mpg.

Isn't that exactly what the EPA numbers predict (with their flawed calculation methods that tend to overstate the actual fuel economy, no less)? ;)

Also, how are you folks calculating MPG? I've noticed that the trip computer tends to overstate the tank economy (odometer miles divided by gallons to fill the tank to full) by about 5%, give or take.

I'm getting the same mileage figures on the highway in my 4.6 - 28 to 30 mpg cruising 70-75. First car I've EVER bought that got higher than on the window sticker.

i agree that the trip computer overstates by about 5% or so. we just completed a 1500 mile trip. the computer would say 30.5 and by my hand calculation using the odometer and fuel put into the car i came up with about 28.8.

also note the speedometer reads high. i think that an indicated 72 is more like 68 or so. you can read actual speed in one of the navigation menus.....

Are the Nav system in US different than the one in Canada? I noticed a number of forum members mention reading the actual speed via the Nav system. I cannot find any such feature on my Canadian Gen. How does one get to that screen?

Average 34 MPG ( Canadian gallon ) at 75. Great !

V6 TECH:)

I have a 3.8. I just got back from my first trip in my Genesis. Coming back from Palm Desert to Carson California a distance of about 120 mi., an altitude drop of about 300 ft, with about 450lbs of pax/luggage, and basically level terrain (some hills in between), I got 28.1 mpg on car computer. I thought this would be optimistic but when I did it manually comparing miles to gas used, I calculated 29.3. I'll take either one. Most of the driving was at 75 mph. I was mightily impressed! For you old gear heads out there, compare this performance to the equivalent '62 Pontiac Bonneville coupe with a 389 w/4bbl (3900 lbs and 333 brake Hp), maybe 14 mpg.

In addition, while driving at 75 mph I glance away and I, alerted by my wife, had to avoid an unknown item on highway. With no time to put both hands on the wheel, I made a quick one handed half lane change and then back again. The car behaved beautifully, darting over and back with no effort or concern, although there was great consternation by my wife.

Lastly, I noticed that with a half hour left, I was not squirming in the seat and the rest of the trip went quickly, and listening to that great radio in the quiet environment of Genesis was a totally new pleasure.

Amazing car.

On my trip yesterday to Red Wing, MN I averaged 30.1 mpg with my 4.6 on the way there, and took a different route back which averaged 29.8 mpg, and both directions used the cruise control set at 70 mph.

It's not the flattest drive since going to Southern and Southeast MN is somwhat hilly in spots, but I have to say I'm impressed since my GF's 06' V6 Sonata does around the same MPG numbers:D

I even had a couple times of passing pokey drivers hitting 115mph with ease:D

My two friends who were with even though they were shaking their heads and the passing thought is was impressive and complimented on the "very smooth comfortable ride at any speed" as they stated.:)

Where were you driving from, Scott? Twin Cities area or further away? I drive a 2009 3.8 V6 and have only 3000 mi on the car which was purchased Dec 26, 2009. Driving the car away from the dealer with 100 mi on the clock, it averaged between 27-29 on the road. I've only driven it in local traffic since and I get 23-27 in my normal day to day shopping trips and errand running.

I drove from the Twin Cities to RedWing and then back.

Against the advice of many i converted my 3.8 Genny to run on a hydrogen blend and to date have averaged 50mpg over 100 mile route including some freeway, city, country and mountain driving.I found driving at 2200rmp gives the best resaults but that is above the speed limit so in fact we are paying to drive slower. As i live in a cold region the gas is a winter blend which gets less mpg so am looking forward to spring so see how it improves.By the way figures are in Canadian gallons.

By what means are you generating the hydrogen?

MPG figures would be more interesting if everyone was on Fuelly. I'm 15.3 MPG, 99.9% city driving. I don't see any high V8's MPG on Fuelly, even the V6's are not high.

It is very difficult to follow this discussion if you are in Canada and calculate fuel efficiency by the number of litres used per 100km driven. Your MPG figures mean exactly nothing to me when I am trying to compare Americans' fuel efficiency with my own.

So I took the 10.3 litres used per 100km which is what my car told me I averaged on a recent drive from just outside Montreal to Ottawa and used a converter site I found on the net. It turns out to be 22.8 MPG.

Now considering that most of this drive was on the open highway, this seems low in comparison with what others here are reporting. Does the temperature of the air make a difference? I can't remember the actual air temperature but I would guess it was probably aroung minus 10C.

I have a dry cell producing 3ltrs per min at 20 amps.In 2000 km it has used less than a ltr of distilled water.Still trying differant computer fixes to get even more mileage.

On our last fill up we got a true measured 23.3mpg (dividing miles by gallons.) If I recall, she got about 430 miles on the tank full (reading ---to empty.) This is with the V6 on Michelin X-Ice2's.

The driving was 18 mile, mostly highway trips to my wife's office (1 mile to highway, 1 mile off highway.) It is getting a little better. Earlier when I checked it was more like 22-22.5mpg. Not sure how much is from engine break-in, (@ about 2K miles) and how much is from the weather getting warmer...shortening warm-up times.

Our best earlier mileage was a highway trip that garnered 25.3 mpg, vs. a claimed (by the trip computer) 27.1 mpg. In comparison, I got 27.3 mpg from our 2003 225 hp Acura TL on the same trip, and pretty similar on our 1999 200 hp Toyota Avalon.

I believe a lot of people, reporting 29-30 mpg, would find their true mileage considerably lower vs. what the computer is telling them.

Still, I'm pretty happy with it. Our 235 hp 4WD Volvo wagon was lucky to get 21 mpg overall, and never broke much over 23 mpg on a trip. The Genny doesn't have to push the other wheels and axle, but does have 25% more horsepower on tap.

P.S. I was recalling my first sedan, a rear wheel drive 1980 Mazda 626 with a staggering 80 hp. I got in the low 40 mpg range on the highway with it. Once I drove from Detroit to Pennslyvania and back on a single tank of gas...over 600 miles.

I live in the Chicago, IL area and recently drove to Indianapolis, IN. I wanted to see what kind of my mileage I would get on the highway. Here is what I did to get the most MPG:

I have a 2009 Genesis 4.6. with about 20K miles

1. Filled gas tank about 1/2 m from highway (previous MPG reset)
2. Drove by myself. ( i weigh about 150)
3. Weather sunny with almost no winds
4. Maximum speed 65 mph
5. Distance driven about 222 miles
6. cruise control most of the way
7. gas type regular unleaded
8. MPG achieved 32.3
9. My previous best was 31.2 between Chicago and Milwaukee

I was extremely pleased and will try to beat that mileage some other time.

Over 200 miles through IL. (flat land) cruise set at 70, I got 31.4, with my 6, 7,000 miles on it.
