  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My 2010 sat for three days in the garage. Temp is high sixties. Went to start the car and it sounded like a terrible misfire and rattles like valves. Exhaust smelt like a Toxic fume. It also threw a "check engine light". Shut off, let sit five minutes and car started normally but still had the check engine light.

I will call Hyundai on Monday.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

The "toxic" fumes sounds like unburned gas.

Makes your nose/eyes/throat burn?? But the car still runs.

My son's camaro did this when we first bought it (no check engine light though - I'd guess due to not being in closed loop yet on start up (OBD1 system). The injectors were leaking/passing more gas than the car needed.

Unburned gas. How do you get unburned gas? Too much to burn properly? I can see that happening. Spark plugs not firing at the right time or not a hot enough spark. I can see that happening (not firing at the right time mostly). Not enough air to burn properly? If the air filter/air passage is unobstructed I can't really see this happening - unless maybe the intake valves are opening properly and if that is happening - how does it get the gas?

I just can't see that being mechanical. If the crankshaft turns then the rest of the mechanical items driven off it turn.

I can shut my GM vehicles (1981 through 2005) and my Ford (2010) down immediately after starting and nothing bad happens on the next start up.

For that matter my Coupe (manual transmission) sometimes shuts down right after start up (you're right, anything geared that low shouldn't be dying when start off from a dead stop ;)) and it fires up without issue after I kill it.

This dealer thing of checking the oil/oil filter sounds like BS to me. I have hundreds of thousands of miles on non-Hyndai cars/trucks with non-Hyundai oil filters with zero issues. Their filters aren't better than anything else out there.

There is a TSB for multiple and random misfire CEL, FYI.
