Modifying your car....why?

So according to this the only reason people modify their cars is because they want to impress other people.....

It sounds like you feel that anyone that modifies their car is doing so because they want others to perceive them a certain way and they are doing it to the detriment of saving for retirement or making sound financial decisions.

I thought most people modified their cars because that's what they like and couldn't care less what others think about it.

I did NOT say that everyone who modifies their car cannot really afford to do it. Many can afford it quite easily.

But if you look at some of the more common type modifications of cars in general (not necessarily the Genesis), there are a lot of examples of pimp-mobiles, low-riders, etc, and I don't think those people are saving for retirement.

As for impressing others, I think that a lot of people like to show off their modifications, as can be witnessed by posts on this forum. There is nothing wrong with that. But one of the things that amazes me is how often people ask for opinions on which after-market wheels look best, which suggests to me that they are very concerned about what their peers think about such mods. I like nice looking wheels also (although not over-sized ones), but I don't have to ask anyone which ones are the best looking.

A lot of people who don't ever modify their cars, buy luxury cars to impress people. There is nothing wrong with that either, if they can really afford it.

What we don't need is haters dissing other people's mods...example: I just put tint on my genny and I'm like a kid on Christmas eve showing it off like it's something special. 84fordman - Was it strange to have all leather except for the armrest? Guessing the part out cars armrest was damage.

It was a little strange having the feeling of leather against your back and cheap ass cloth on your elbow.

IIRC the SHO V8 was a floor shift and my generation of Taurus was column shift only, so the SHO did not have that type of armrest.

As to which rims look the best, they don't have to be after-market. Some OEM rims look good to me. I know them when I see them, and don't need to ask others, or ask my mommy.

Regarding the tint film VLT %, I do care, and just trying to keep you out of jail. Had nothing to do with what it looks like. Personally, I don't like to mess with Smoky, and don't ever want to give him an excuse to stop me or write a ticket.

I live in NJ where tinting front windows is illegal - but I see plenty of cars with tinted front windows every day. The police don't seem to care here as it would be easy money if they wanted to write tickets for that!

I think in some states or localities they only will ticket people for illegal tints if you are pulled over for some other reason. But I would not want to tempt Smoky if his city was having any budget problems.

I have owned several cars throughout the years and I don't think that I have owned a single one that I didn't modify. Whether it was for performance or to style it differently to my own taste, I don't think there are many stock cars out there that fit my standards. I think it is hilarious to see concept cars and sketches before they become production cars. They always have wheels 2 inches larger, they are lowered, the windows are always tinted, the body style always looks more agressive, etc. Then 2 years later the production model comes out, the wheels look like set of hubcaps, the body is bland, and it looks like there is a 3 inch lift. If automakers didn't have budgets, quotas, and emission laws, the vehicles on the lots would look a hell of a lot different then they do.
Every car can be made to perform better and be personalized to fit your personality. I don't consider it modifying, I consider what we do finishing it.

I always modify my cars. It came from my Dad who always had modified cars. He would say, "I don't want to see myself coming down the street"

I say the same thing. I do it for my own enjoyment.

Well stated KDMzilla!! I hole heartedly agree with everything you said.. Every car that I've owned I've always modified something on it and I will continue to do so. Always good to come on forums and see how people modify their cars

I've never had a car stock for any notable period of time. I was 15 when I got my first car, and within days it was tinted, had a stereo, and some GTS head/taillight covers. (It was teh 90s...sue me)

Since then, everything has been modified from Range Rovers to my DSMs (over 500hp in the last one, and low 11s with a torn IC coupler...tuned by moi).

Stock is boring to me.
