  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I'm from Burlington Ontario

5W20 Synthetic

I am using Mobil 1 5W-30 EP right now, but when it gets colder (doesn't get extremely cold where I live) I will switch to Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy (which I have already purchased).

My V6 starts up and runs quieter with Mobil 1 5W-30, which has the oil filter on top that drains back into crankcase.

I use a summer weight and a winter weight oil, Since it is summer now, I answered with my summer weight.

I am just like my car, I also have a summer and winter weight.

Mark,
Isn't this backwards? you are moving to a heavier oil in the cold when a lighter oil would work better....

5w is the "old" viscosity , so if you switch to 10w xxx in the cold you are getting less "flow" during cold start-up.

I live in very cold and switch to 0w xxx in October ....

I've been to Burlington many times, (long time ago).

You know its been a long time ago, because you no longer have IPA which is what I used to drink. :D

(to those of you who don't know the fine Canadian beers and ales,
IPA was "India Pale Ale"

I'm old school - 5W20 is just terrifying to me lol All of my vehicles, including my 2008 Silverado now recommend 5W20 - I can only assume for CAFE standard purposes - but I try to stay at a minimum 5W30. It could be placebo effect, but they seem to run quieter. My expedition had piston slap with 5W20 - went away with 5W30.

I use Amsoil in everything, except my diesels, which get Shell Rotella.

using an overweight oil can cause problems. using a 5w30 in an engine designed for 20 can cause problems. I would never recommend change the "hot" weight of your oil (against manufacturer)

an overweight oil will not flow as the MFG intended in an engine designed for 20 weight. This may result in "hot" spots or pressure issues.

There is no real evidence that the engine was "designed" for a 20 weight oil. There is considerable evidence that auto manufacturers specify 5W-20 to meet CAFE mpg objectives imposed by the government. The Hyundai Genesis Owners Manual lists 5W-30 as an acceptable weight depending on ambient temperatures.

Some dealers will use 5W-30 on the Genesis if you don't specify something different.

I've never seen a vehicle that recommends 5W20 that didn't also list 5W30 as an acceptable oil.
