I am or was a College Student for the Art Institute in Chicago to be an Art Director. Now a lot of the suggestions and changes I'm going to propose here are not Engineering or Mechanical Changes aside from the in-bold.

I was in a car accident roughly 6 months ago, Hairline Skull fracture across the entire left span of my skull, partial rotator cuff tear (not requiring surgery) but left with a "winging" shoulder blade or "sick scapula" and nerve damage in my entire left arm among many other issues. I was driving my 8 year old trusted and very reliable 2003 hyundai elantra which I had almost completely restored to brand new short of fuel injector valves etc. and rear drum brake replacements. Both cars were totaled and now I'm hellbent on getting the car I want and know is better looking than most.

Can't go to school, work or do anything anymore, so I concentrate on art work from home.

These design suggestions are purely cosmetic and interior based.

This Should be the 2012 Genesis

2009 or 2010 Exterior Design
5.0 V8 429BHP / 376LBS Torque - MPG 18/26 ( Most likely with new 8-Speed )
CDC with VSM, ESC, TCS, EBD, ABS.

It needs an AWD System up to par with BMWs xDrive, really, xDrive is the best traction control system I've ever driven in the snow.

Exterior Dimensions (Inches Below)

Wheel : Base 119.9
Length : 203.1
Width : 74.4 (excluding mirrors)
Height : 58.7
Track (in, Front/Rear) : 63.8/64.1

Yes these are the exterior dimensions of the 2011 & 2012 Equus, but so what, the Genesis is better looking for it.

Unfortunately I won't be able to update this thread post all in one like I want to, but Sunday Hopefully I will have all the picture concepts up for the interior first being as it's the easiest to portray, convey and show you guys ultimately what this interior would look like should I lead the design.

Then will follow the Exterior which for the most part is almost imaginative, only needing the in-bold already posted above and left alone 2010 Exterior Chrome Trim Designs left as is. Just a larger version sedan of the Genesis the same size as the Equus.

I'll try my hardest to get the interior done by tomorrow and have you guys let me know what you think for the most part as Genesis owners.

Alright, I'm back .... Time to get started.

Had to switch computers from an iMac with compatibility issues for uploads.
Downside, I can't use CAD or Maya 3D on this PC to show you actual rendered exterior and interior designs.

So I'll post R&D photo reference to try and articulate the designs.

Damn, have to upload all parallel pictures that coincide with the complete explanation of the interior dash and shifter cluster with that twin iDrive.

Feel like an idiot with this thread, two days and thanks to crappy computers I'm unable to get my concepts up. That and doctor appointments 5 days a week

Moderator, isn't there a better place for this thread?

I know I know, I will request it to be moved, but I have to at least show you guys the actual materials I'm suggesting.

I'd like to know what a larger viewing forum would think of these designs before I call hyundai and hound them for a spot on the design team.

I can't let this stupid "cosmetic" or "facelift" everyone's talking about ruin an already great exterior design.

Ok Here we go with the Dash first.

Instrument Cluster Around the Clock ....

This will look pretty cartoony but oh well, for those with actual mental capacity, you should be able to piece the picture together in your mind.

It's going to be color guided as well, try to limit the confusion as much as Possible.

Genesis Dash Color Index

In the Green & Yellow areas I've marked on the current dash design, I would suggest different materials as follows to replace the leather as an Option only, if hyundai wanted to take it more seriously that's fine.

These Images pertain to the Green and Yellow only, not the dotted button cluster with black stripes, that will come later.

Use Either Carbon Fiber or Steinway Piano Black Gloss Wood Trim to replace all of the silver plastic that imitates aluminum.

Carbon Fiber 1
Carbon Fiber 2
Carbon Fiber 3
Carbon Fiber 4
Carbon Fiber 5 - This one was a custom job in an M3, just for perspective, not my favorite or anything !

Or

Steinway Piano Black Gloss Wood Trim 1 Just inside that rear iDrive Knob cluster .... yeah it looks nice !

Piano Black Gloss 2 - This picture pertains to the Yellow Markings on the red leather I made of the Genesis Dash, I'd much rather see that replaced with Steinway Piano Black Wood Trim, the current Genesis Design is great, but the material used if changed to this Piano Gloss Wood Trim, would be amazing.

Now Onto the Green Zone, not pertaining to the insides of the dotted and striped black Zone. Where the AC and Clock Instruments are.

Uses these button Materials Found in the Equus instead, better looking My design suggestions for the Blue will accent this being as it's also already in the 2012 Equus.

Buttons for Cooled and Heated Seats, FM, AM & XM, iPhone and Navi Use Buttons are the materials I'm talking about being used inside the black Striped and Dotted Area of the Dash.

Here's Another Equus Picture from the back seat controls, I'm not saying use this exact same design by any means, but copy the button black materials used in the oval/oblong design of the Genesis Dash inside the Dotted Black and Striped Markings.

Button Materials Only, Not the Square/Boxed Shape.

Which Brings me to the Shifter Up next in the next posting of design suggestions for the interior. I will do another little cartoon painted and marked picture of the 2012 Genesis Shifter Cluster/Knob, and link pictures of current designs that could be used instead, giving a much more serious interior look to go with it's "so serious" 5.0 8-Speed.

It's a lot to piece together but I assume others out there get the picture, and apologize for inadequate computer tech that I have, but can't use for this right now

But before I move onto the Shifter Cluster, one Last thing for the Dash, Those Blue Circles some of you must be wondering about.

Which I'm still on the fence for their positioning, maybe they could be tied into the actual AC and Hazard Cluster around the Clock like in a 7 Series Dash you would probably see today, but keep this exact material and Knob for it that I'm about to post a link to, again this is from the 2012 Equus.

So here's the AC Knobs that I suggested for the Blue Circles.

Like I said though, the positioning of it could be moved only if possible inside that black dotted/striped area. Now, I didn't get to mark or designate what Knobs I'm talking about, so I'll explain before you click the link, where the AC Knobs say "Temp Auto & Temp Dual" are the only instruments on this dash I'm referring to specifically for the Blue Circled Positioning of the Dash in the Current Genesis Dash Design, maybe they can be moved inside the Black Dotted/Striped if room was somehow discovered after moving some things that might not need to be in there with this kind of design. But either way it would look pretty damn sick !

Temp Dual and Temp Auto Knobs Only !

It sure is patchy, but I had to do what I could with almost nothing.

The variants of Dashes these materials can leave you with are pretty damn amazing.

If you think about it, you can have them this way.

Piano Black Gloss Clock and Hazard Cluster ( Green Zone ) with the black buttons from the Equus Pictures ( inside the black Striped/Dotted Zone) , With all leather dash.

Or Piano Black Gloss Wood Trim instead of that red leather, carbon fiber green zone, black buttons in the dotted/striped zone.

Like I said, Variants ! These materials give you a large library of style to choose from.

Next up, maybe by tonight, the Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive Shifter and "iDrive" Cluster. Go with Black Buttons from Equus with Steinway Gloss Trim Around that like, kind of like this .... Link

Exact same one way no zig zag or diagonal shifting pattern like the current genesis and equus model. Speaking of which, that's supposed to change with almost the exact same shifter knob as this, in this picture here.

Link

Genesis - Link
Genesis 2 - Link
Genesis 3 - Link

I would again get rid of all that silver looking plastic/aluminum and replace it with Piano Black Wood Trim Steinway, and replace it's silver buttons with the black materials used in the Equus, or have them both as selectable variants because the black looks better.

Wouldn't change the positioning of the genesis design, just the color and buttons/materials to the black Equus ones as well as the trim instead of silver plastic/aluminum.

I've been trying to contact them for a couple weeks now, Stacey Bailey is first on my list of personnel to talk to from the HQ Design Center.

I'm not taking no for an answer anyway, the Genesis sold me over BMW when I started watching it's AMCI testing before it's commercial launch. Especially because of the price difference ! But ever since it's ugly rear end and front end "facelift" for 2012, I'm not so sure anymore.

I'm sure some of them have already been in this very thread, when it comes to art and ideas, there's no such thing as a patent really on an idea, amazing how people can just take one and run with it in any industry from Automotive to Video Games even.

And you've seen proof positive of these changes to the 2012 where? And you care as a 22 yr old student non-owner because?

From an increasingly cranky old man - I must say this thread is ridiculous, not to mention pointless. If you want to redesign the Genesis go get a job with Hyundai. Blathering on about it here is unlikely to have much effect on the boys in Seoul.

Getting a job at their CA HQ for their design center in the middle of Surgeries and Physical Therapy among many others, after losing almost everything you have literally from a car accident, yeah easier said than done.

Getting the word out to an install base is the first thing you do when an idea pops in your head, kind of like "Beta Testing".

And you've seen proof positive of these changes to the 2012 where? And you care as a 22 yr old student non-owner because?

Proof you ask ? Being as I've rhetorically answered your other questions. God there's a lot of old farts in here acting like old dogs that can't learn new tricks, unbelievable.

Proof - Nothing a google search can't remedy.

Link 1

Link 2 - This one shows you the ugly thick fat girth chrome strip I was posting about on the rear end, with it's ugly front end pertaining to it's altered grille and front bumper. To the blind man, you can't notice much, but I can see all the dimensional changes in size they've made to the grille and front end.

"As a 22 year old ( student or not ), why I care ?"

Well that's a pretty dumb question really .... maybe I just really really like the original design of the car aside from very minute exterior and interior details. Sort of like My dream BMW that I could design instead, but for 1/3rd or even 1/4th the price.

Can you see the appeal yet ?

Though with only 385BHP ( giving it the benefit of the doubt ) driving like a pontiac G6, hopes are high for it to actually compete with real cars among the likes of BMW and MB.

Lexus isn't ever worth mentioning really, same as hyundai at this point, two Asian imports trying to snag all the German Secrets.

With VSM, CDC and all the Equus additions to hyundai's arsenal, you'd think they would focus on the better looking car ( the genesis ) to give it what it's missing under the hood and in it's suspension especially in anticipation of a 5.0 8-Speed.

DieHard,
Hyundai already has a winner, they don't need your talent, find someone who does and make a name for yourself. Like BMW maybe

Joel P. who designed the award winning Genesis works for ford now.

And GM's former Exterior Design Chief Phil Zak is new to hyundai as of late.
Do you really think they're going to keep it "Hyundai" or add unwanted influence to the vehicle .... ?

Really think about it, you can already see the changes, what happens when the "Winner" turns out to be a loser in a year or 2 ?

As a "fanbase" or current install base as customers and current Genesis owners as most of the users here are, you would think they would want to safe guard the object of what really makes the Genesis grab your attention.

Wouldn't you ? I do plan on hammering away at hyundai about this, I just don't want them turning this into a 7 Series or Lexus or S-Class look alike, because truthfully, BMW and MB are amazing cars, but there was a time when the beautiful look they had was consistent, now they don't know what people are looking for and the entire industry is scrambling to find a top selling design.

I just aim to safeguard what makes the Genesis, The Genesis.

Hyundai is all the rage these days... its funny passing hot shots on the highway driving Bimmers... I know they're trying to justify the extra 15K they spent as my 4.6 smokes them!

I just did a lot of cleaning up of this discussion including merging with another. I don't see any reason for people to be getting uptight here. If there's a problem I'm not seeing, please PM me.

Much appreciated, I'm working on the shifter cluster now, should be a cleaner more direct display in-thread.

Oldest sister just had a baby last night, 2nd in a row ( two sisters ) two weeks apart, chaos.

One more thing, Instead of trying to contact hyundai about this, I've already found out their employees have been browsing this thread, especially as googles' #1 hit for "2012 Hyundai Genesis" as key words alone, if you were to ask me about the dash alone.

My preference would be that it be all black leather as is, but instead where I marked as Green, and all the rest of the wood trim, I would make Steinway Piano Black Gloss Wood Trim, and use the black buttons inside the equus clusters replace the black dotted/striped as my preference in standard launch. Oh and either 4 or 5 seat Heated & Cooled Leather seats, and 4 way extremely powerful but yet efficient/durable/reliable Climate
Control AC.

I'm hard a way at work on it's exterior and interior alone Hyundai, I know you've seen this thread, Been working independently on this Genesis with my german only background of MB/BMW/Audi as indirect influence of innovation, but material benchmarking.

I'm not so stubborn, but if this genesis design starts getting ugly like current spy shots indicate, that "just won't cut it" V8 of theirs will not be enough to trump MB's or BMW's reputation.

That's why even with a 5.0 V8 and an 8-Speed coming, getting the exterior and interior right and more importantly, Keeping it right from the 09/2010 Exterior Models is important.

I'm more humble than that, I would much rather get a Genesis than any V8 7 Series or V8 S-Class if it could stay on track as I'm trying to explain.

Just to further explain or clarify, Imagine the 2009 Genesis with the 5.0 8-Speed, that's a V8 Sedan I would pick over any BMW or MB V8.

Funny note too : Not the #1 Google search anymore, you type in 2012 Hyundai Genesis and for 3 weeks straight my post here was as the top.

Right after I acknowledged that and made it known, I think "someone" out there did a little something to thwart the attention. Hey Chris Hosford, call that 600 number back.

Im not sure if its you or me that need to up the medication...

Diehard,

I think you have a lot of spunk! I'm an old fartette, who just happens to love her Genny.

I'm also well educated (not just college, but that famous old School of Hard Knocks).

If I was in the automotive industry, I'd certainly look over your designs. But I'd first make a sales person out of you. Learn some persuasion skills....tactful and diplomatic, pleasantly aggressive persuasion skills.

Your supportive defense positions and research show you to be certainly not lazy, but don't overlook us old farts or pooh-pooh our questions. I for one, wish I could have been as creative and as knowledgeable on one thing as you are when I was 22!

Not to pry into your health issues, but I was disappointed to read this from you...

"Can't go to school, work or do anything anymore, so I concentrate on art work from home".

You'll need to turn that into a CAN somehow.

I'm just sayin.....;)

Another spied version of the 2012 Genesis, they still are goofing around with that ugly upper chrome strip on the rear end above the license plate giving it more of a "chevy malibu" look to it. Or Camry/Lexus ....

As to the post in quote, appreciate your support greatly, seriously this is exactly all my material targets, "just what looks good and doesn't". Really all this is for me is just early R&D for the Exterior and Interior of future Genesis Iterations.

As for my health situation, with physical therapy 3 days a week up to an hour each way to and from, potential future surgeries and nerve damage from that car wreck, Hopes for what was the "game plan" for a future have become pretty dim. Especially now that I have to propel/climb myself out of such a deficit that's beyond daunting. Can only search for work during nights because my days consist of work search and treatment for residual shoulder damage, nobody wants to hire someone in such a fragile position.

Hanging on by a thread, but I'm fighting it while I still can fight.

By the way forum goers ! Exterior is done, just have to upload, and within this link I've posted, I forgot one thing about it's interior, That wood trim accent on the steering wheel that seems to be in every single car.

For that I suggest either dark glossy carbon fiber implant, or have it all leather, but having it all leather means in a few years it will wear out thus leaving it feeling disgusting and looking it too as most all lather wraps do regardless of quality or vehicle.

Interesting read. Some really cool ideas.

I am kind of disappointed that they have not pursued the AWD version.

I couldn't agree more, not the most impressive story, also one I shouldn't really talk publicly about.

But I was skeptical of BMW's xDrive for a long time, so I took it on a 40 mile journey in one of the worst snow storms in the Chicago area, Highway speeds too where the dual lanes are banded into one that can't really be made out as you traverse it

So here I am, in a 3.0 X5 ( 2005 Model - Base ), absolutely pushing it to the test, as I fluctuate on Route 12 from Illinois into Wisconsin, from 75MPH to 95MPH in 9+ Inches of snow and climbing....

I was a believer after that night, no gas in the tank either!

Didn't slip, weaving in and out of traffic on lanes I couldn't even see!
Felt like it was the middle of july on dry asphalt.

MB, or Audi can't even compete with xDrive, it's simply the best and I hope hyundai if anyone, can match, they owe me... :)

Though I managed to finish up some college & am currently working on my own right now with my own tech start up company out of Chicago, had to take off again recently, and am focusing on this again, hopefully now I'll be able to articulate and convey the true vision (and get something in return for it.... for a change) with more advanced hardware and software that even HATC uses in Irvine CA.

Little did you know... but *I* have been working feverishly on some ideas for the next generation Genesis as well!

Engine: Let's make a 5.7L version of the TAU, and turbocharge it. That should totally destroy cars like the SRT-8 and will make this a true M5 contender. Of course, not as good, because BMW's are totally the best cars in the universe.

Transmission: An 8-speed is a good transmission, but Hyundai should give us a 7-speed automated manual dual-clutch tranny, like the M5 has.

Interior: The Genesis needs an upgrade in the interior, which is showing its age. I say continue your idea of using piano black as the trim; that was freaking brilliant. I'm so glad you came up with that, because now I own an R Spec, and it has that color inside it and I love it! Oh, and maybe add i-drive, heads-up-display, and alcantara leather with suede inserts, 'cause those are nice.

Exterior: The Genesis needs an upgrade outside. I'm thinking deeper front airdam, larger air intakes, more sculpted rocker panels, a discreet deck-lid spoiler and updated lightweight double-spoke wheels. Also, they should add some large quad exhaust pipes out back and front fender vents with integral signal repeaters. That would be awesome.

So... Hyundai, do all that, keep the price about the same, and offer us some unique badging, like this:

Best post yet Ruissimo. BMW blow hards won't be able to resist the switch to Korean automotive engineering :)
