  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My nav system is unable to "find" my house

First, I've lived in this house for 26 years, so its not a new address.

When I sit in the car in the driveway and type in my address and hit save the next thing the nav system tells me is that my house/driveway/address is 200 yds. from where me and the car are sitting.

The second thing is if I just tell it to remember this location when the car is sitting in the driveway it then tells me the address is a non-existent street address (the numbers on my street do not go up to 8144, only 8120.

It does the same thing at my parents home. It shows where the car is on the road but gives me a completely different (and non-existant) street address.

Navigation on the road (so far) seems fine. There are quite a few places (gas stations and restaurants) that do not show up on the map even though they have been there for several years (6 to 8 years in some cases).

Anyone else have a nav system that is lost and can't find itself?

My nav is also off a bit on the location of my house, although at least the street's correct. Of course accuracy is only as good as the underlying database, and the one in the Genesis isn't perfect. It's disappointing that there's no way for us owners to update the database ourselves.

Navigation systems do not contain exact locations for all street addresses, they only have representative samples and interpolate information in-between them.

In your case they also don't have the correct range of valid street addresses, and some missing businesses. Not sure who is the map provider for Hyundai. but I had that problem with a Garmin GPS and they use Navteq. I went to the Navteq website and they have a process for requesting corrections, but it usually takes a long time for them to get the info updated and trickled down to all their GPS customers. The have to send someone out to your location to remap it.

You might want to also try online sites like Google Maps to see whether their maps are accurate (I believe they use Navteq also, but not certain).

I have the same problem with my GPS. I think that when you save the address as home, the GPS offsets the location by a few meters. In my mind this could be a good thing. For example, say someone steals your car and wants to find your house to break in using the garage door opener, if the thief tries to navigate home with the GSP, they won't know which house you actually reside in. just a thought because the GPS says that my address is invalid.

For that same reason, I set my "Home" on my portable Garmin GPS to a place about a mile away from my house. Since I have a garage door opener in the car, then it needs to be fairly far away from my actual home, otherwise they can easily drive through my neighborhood to find out which garage door opens to find my house.

Mark,

That is a recommendation particularly with the portable units (to not have your home address but a nearby address).

These GPS units are a favorite of thieves who steal items from cars. If you're out shopping and your car gets broken into, the thief knows you're out of your house and can look up the home address and break in.

And Kayroe's point is well taken also. For this very reason I have a nearby intersection listed as my "home".
