Hi, I think I can use some help from you guys. Hope someone can help me solve this mystery of abnormal engine sound. (Video clip link below.)
Background:
- Mine is a 2010 Genesis 4.6 with 19,000 miles
- Brought my car to Round Rock Hyundai Service Department and did the following:
- Fuel injection system flush
- Oil Change (Synthetic)
- Engine Air Filter
- Cabin Air Filter
Issue:
After doing above 4 things, I noticed the engine would make an abnormal engine sound when I slowly ramp up the engine at low RPM. I can hear the abnormal sound in all gears and in 6th gear is most noticeable.

My steps to reproduce:
- Find a not busy highway access road. (I could actually reproduce it on a highway but the road noise will be too much for others to hear.)
- Slowly speed up the car to 6th gear
- Maintain the car at 1,500 RMP
- Let go the gas paddle and let the RMP drop to 1,250
- Now, slowly squeeze the gas paddle to ramp up the engine
- The abnormal engine sound can be heard easily between 1,250 to 1500 RMP. After that the primary engine sound will dominate.
What have been done so far:
- Service Manager at Round Rock Hyundai put in a bottle of fuel additive and told me to fill up the car to see if the problem would go away when the entire tank of gas was used up. The answer is no.
- Brought the car to Round Rock Hyundai again and the new Service Manager took a new Genesis 4.6 on the lot and could not reproduce the abnormal engine sound.
- The new Service Manager said she would bring the issue to the attention of “Hyundai Field Engineer”. (I will call her next Wed to get an update.)
Hope someone here can answer the questions of:
- What sound is that?
- Is that engine sound normal?
- If you are a 4.6 owner, does your car make the same engine sound in the condition I described?
Thanks for any info, assistance in advanced!
Regards,
