It is for a folding emergency triangle.

However, it also fits an umbrella just fine.

It is placed in the center of the trunk lid, when open the trunk you have to look up to the exact center of the trunk lid.

Yep, it is for Emergency Triangles as stated earlier. Good place for anything needed for safe keeping though in the USA models. This was mentioned in some of the youTube reviews of the early G2 models.
