  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Model Type
2G Genesis Sedan (2015-2016)
I have a 2015 Genesis with 51K miles and being told I need the rear shocks replaced, as they are showing some signs of leakage. Supposedly its a "known" issue. I see no cupping on the tires or extraordinary wear. How do I know for sure. My last Genesis, always serviced by a dealer never had to have shocks or struts replaced even at 170K miles.

What are my options? I'm being told its a $1500 job, seems outrageous for shocks.

Signs of leakage is usually a visible thing. Did they offer to take you to the shop and look? How is the driving? Is it getting bouncy if you go over a bump? Handle ok?

If you have concerns I'd ask an independent shop to look at them. It is possible there is a problem but for that much money I want to know for sure.

The car is at the dealer currently, so waiting on their call back. We have very twisty turning roads here in Atlanta and this car rides great. I definitely want to look at what they are talking about.

Regarding the $1500 quote, I assume that's a dealership number. Do you have the adaptive suspension? If so, I could see oem parts installed by the dealer getting up to that price range. Not sure what aftermarket options are out there, but a dealer probably wouldn't be the most receptive to them anyway.

I passed on the 5.0 with the adaptive suspension when I was car shopping after one sales rep told me how much it cost to fix the suspension. I can see them quoting that price since the adaptive shocks are about $600 each but if it's the regular suspension that is crazy and I would do it yourself if you can.

The quote does seem high. (I did rear shocks myself on my crown vic and it was ridiculously easy.)

It looks easy on the Genesis too, although the manual says you should check the alignment after replacing the shocks. And I think the Genesis can only be properly aligned at the dealer because of the steering wheel position sensor.

Never heard or seen that anywhere before.

I don't have the adaptive suspension. Dealer just called and said that rear shocks will cost $900. If Hyundai shocks are going to fail in 50K miles or less then OEM doesn't seem to be the best option, there has to be a better option.

Sounds like a Mugging in Progress to me - go to an independent shop for a second opinion.

A quick search from Hyundai parts sites puts them at around $153 ea.

I just had my car on jacks cleaning the rims and checked out my rears for leakage. They looks good and also it looks like an easy job and I have replaced many shock in the past. The fronts do not look easy though! I am dreading the day I have to replace them. But if your handy the rears should be easy if not any decent shop should be able to do the job in an hour or two.

About the steering wheel position sensor:
these first came into being as a component of dynamic cruise control, IIRC. Function was to allow for steering through curves and not letting radar respond to cars in another lane straight ahead.
I had it on a 2004 Lexus.
My alignment guy learned it made position of the wheel during alignment more critical than before.
BUT: armed with that understanding....any good shop can align your Genesis.
