If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello Hyundai community,

I have 07' BMW 550 with 87000, so looking to trade and get another BMW, but 3-series, until that weekend I had a time and stopped by Hyundai dealer since it's our town, I was curious, about Hyundai cars and just love cars as any car. So they told me about rear wheel drive model and decided to test drive. I got in the car and drove for about 30 min and like it, well it's not agile as BMW 550 sport, but it has very impressive acceleration.
So they have a used one 2012 for less then 30,000, and I like, but I test drove only for 30 min. So my question would I be disappoint later, after all things calm down, since I read on this forum a lot people came from Lexus, BMW, Benz .......
So BMW owners tell me I would or I would not. I'm BMW CCA member, but BMW is now very problematic, I was buying BMW's for ultimate driving machine but not because a brand, but they have too many electrical issues and tired of it.
Also any issue?

Thanks

There are many former BMW owners on this forum now driving a Genesis, myself included, for different reasons: cost/value proposition, reliability, highly complex, over-engineered designs that are difficult to manufacture, the list goes on. Search this forum under BMW for the many threads that describe the reasons people left BMW for Genesis.

There are, of course, many people for whom the BMW driving experience is still worth the high cost and inconvenience of ownership, but more chose to lease and stay in warranty. For
Me, the Genesis is 9/10s the car my 2011 5-Series was, but at 2/3s the price. It has been virtually defect-free for 21,000 miles.

I own a BMW and a Mercedes. The Genesis has more pure power and speed. Does it ride as smooth as the Mercedes E500? No. However the Genesis' reliability is by far better than the BMW or Mercedes. Maintenance cost less too. After 76,000 miles on the Genesis, I still love the car. BTW I'm selling my BMW in the spring and will get another Genesis or E500, depends on the deal.

try it... if you dont like it you can always swap it out... not like loosing a kidney.
I came from a 2007 bmw 3 series (loaded) , straight up the 3 series was planted and launched superbly, the hyundai doesnt... its also 500 lbs more and has an automatic... 800 lbs more if you count my wife.

Anyways you need to decide on time and money. Is your time important or do you want to have to play nice with the bmw service guy ? Is your money important to you because you will $$$ for it with the bmw.

I know now with the minor crap i went thru (almost 20-30 visits to dealer over life of ownership) , decreased MPG (new was 22 traded it was 17), squeeling brakes after 2yrs/12000 miles and it was NEVER fixed. Too many electronics to fail... WTF you even need to have the dealer reprogram the car for a replacement battery.

bmw will have a better driving experience... but for the price of admission... I'll pass.

So, you were about to jump from a 5 to a 3 and you value the performance. What about the BMW driving experience do you like the most? The Genesis is a little bigger than a 5 Series, so it is moving in the opposite direction of the 3 Series.

I jumped from a BMW 7 Series to the Genesis. I think that the Genesis performance is more similar to the 7 Series (but not quite as good) than the 5 Series, but it is closer in size to the 5. Like you, I like the BMW performance and looks, but maintenance was a royal pain. My first 7 Series was pretty good, and I drove that one for more than 110K miles. My second 7 Series was a nightmare. After my recent experience, I needed a break from BMW and the maintenance.

The closest performer I found to the BMW was the Infiniti. The M is a very close performer to the BMW 5 and the G is a very close performer to the BMW 3. However, they both cost almost as their BMW counterparts.

After I drove the Genesis, it was an easy decision to buy one. The Genesis crushes the 5 Series and Infiniti M on value and came pretty close with performance. I think that the suspension in the 2012 is very good. My only performance complaint is the transmission responsiveness-- it seems much slower than a transmission in a BMW, and it does not seem to have the magic integration with other dynamic stability functions.

If you were looking at a 3 for the performance, the Genesis will probably not satisfy. However, if you prefer the size and handling of the 5 Series, then you will not be disappointed in the Genesis.

I think a new F10 5-series is too big and expensive, also after electrical problems with E60 550 I need a break from BMW Gizmo. I had 3-series (couple) and they have didn't any problems what so ever. I thought Genesis is about size of E60 5-series BMW, may be it has slightly more space on rear seat. But all cars grow in size, even new 3 series, so new 3-series is remind me previous generation of 5-series.

This is where I'm going thru now. I have some kind an electrical Grimly that something to do with IBS sensor, but I don’t want spend 300 bucks and then it’s over again. So I’m in process of troubleshooting, but I’m tired of it, it looks never ends.

The Genesis is actually a little bigger than the F10, and it has a lot more rear seat room. That has always been my complaint with the 5 and why I had a 7-- the BMW 5 Series (E32, E39, E60, and F10) have all had small back seats. The only major metric bigger on the F10 is its weight-- about 300 lbs. heaver than the Genesis.

I have always loved the BMW gizmos. They used to be at the forefront of wicked integration. They were the first (I think) to introduce navigation in 1995, and they were the first to do hands-free Bluetooth. They led the world in their dynamic stability innovations for a very long time. However, my assessment is that the rest of the world caught up in the 2000s. The Genesis has most of the cool stuff that you can get in a BMW (or any other European car). The two big features missing are the night vision thing and heads up display. I don't care about night vision, but I love the heads-up display. If the 2014 Genesis has heads-up, I would seriously consider selling mine 2012 Genesis to get a 2014 with HUD.

My 550 is 5000 lbs and Genesis is 3971 lbs isn't right? At least what its said on door frame metal plate.

The weight listed on the door jamb B Pillar is the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. That is the maximum weight that the car should be loaded including curb weight of the vehicle plus the weight of any optional accessories, cargo and passengers. According to MSN Autos, the curb weight of a 2012 F10 550i is 4,365 (an automatic 2007 E60 550i is 3,814 lbs.).

They have too many electrical issues and tired of it.
Out of morbid curiosity, what electrical issues have you had? My BMWs were perfect from an electronics point of view. And, I have two friends who have and have had an E60 550i; both of their cars have been highly reliable. I recall that the early active steering used to eat tires, and the early E65 had some major computer component issues, but I thought those things got worked out around 2003 or 2004.

The battery issue is IBS (sensor, maybe). I replaced battery year ago, then in the summer time car acted strange, when music interrupt and radar detector resets at hard acceleration. So I replaced battery again, month later same thing, so no codes for IBS, sensor (no codes at all, even BMW dealer said they don’t know, telling me remove radar detector.....no way), but something drawing too much current, so it shut off some components to get car going, so I disconnect IBS sensor from the circuit, now works fine, but I’m afraid the battery over charge. Also once in the while (about once a month) SOS msg, saying disabled and I have to reset Idrive again, but no codes as well. Plus I replaced two ARS bars and ARS control unit, eating front tires inside even I did alignment at BMW dealer for 4 times, even I'm mechanically educated but those cars beyond my expertise where I can fix myself. I should never trade my 3-series for this cars, my instinct told me “don’t do it” but I did anyway and I learned everything I heard about 5-series and never again to 5-series. I think it’s one of most unreliable cars from BMW. Why don’t Germans use a Japanese electronics and seals? It would be a perfect car.

Oh yeah, that rings a bell. My dad's E66 did the exact same thing. The dealer even told him to remove the radar detector. It turned out that the car had a bad phone module that would not shut down and was drawing too much power when the car was off. It has been perfect since the dealer replaced the phone module. But, it took them three months to find the problem and some magic connections to galactic HQ in Germany.

I had a 7 series BMW and put 175,000 miles on it with no issues except for the one's I caused by modding it. I did have to replace the tranny at 125,000 miles but I beat the hell out of my cars. I went to a 06 M5. That car was awesome. Only 2 problems I had was a software update at a $100. I also had to replace an oil cooler, but that was covered by warranty. An extended third party warranty is a must for peice of mind. The car was mind blowing and I have driven vette's, Enzo specials and even a shelby cobra. The sound of the V10 was great, most of the time the sound system was off so I could hear the exhaust. $300 oil changes and $1k for changing the sparkplugs are big draw backs but I can do most of the work myself so that helps. It cornered like it was on rails. It was the only car I made excuses just to drive it. Now for the Genesis 4.6. I has somethings that you couldn't get on a 2010 M5 but then there are things on the M5 you can't get on the 4.6. Gas milage on the M5 was 9.5 MPG (I beat the hell out of it) and I have got 30 MPG with the 4.6. To trade my 2011 4.6 for a 2010 M5 it would cost me the 4.6 plus another $40k. From a cost stand point it doesn't make sense. Neither car holds their value very well. I'll give the 4.6 a little more time and then decide if going to go to the M5.
