If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. I've not had much experience with Bluetooth in a vehicle, but here is what I am finding in my Genesis. When I paired my cell phone, everything went great. The phone system in the car works well. But the sound system won't work when Bluetooth is activated. When I get into the car with the cell phone Bluetooth turned on, it connects with the car system right away. But once it connects, I can't use the car's sound system at all. No AM/FM, no XM, no CD. If I disable Bluetooth on the cell phone, the sound system works fine. If I enable it, the sound system goes silent.

I would have thought that with the Bluetooth activated, I could use the sound system, then if I initiated a call or received a call, the sound system would mute. I've read through the manuals and have not found any discussion of this. If this is the case, I can't drive down the highway with Bluetooth on -- unless I want to go in silence.

Can any of you wizards help me with this one?

Thanks much.

My phone connects but I CAN HEAR the radio no problem. If I receive a call while music is playing, the music will mute once I accept the call. Yours should work the same way.
Unfortunately, I do not know why yours does not work the way I just described. Hopefully someone here can help.

The audio system should only mute if there is an active phone call, then un-mute when a call disconnects.

A couple of suggestions. Check the bluetooth options of your phone; you want to make sure it supports HANDS FREE PROFILE. If it doesn't it may not work with the system.

You can pair up to 8 phones. Try the system with another Bluetooth phone to see if this fixes the problem.

You could also unpair and then re-pair the phone to the car.

Coug:

Check Simon's suggestion on page 142 of the DIS manual. Another place to look is page 149 and read up on Private Mode. Your symtoms sound like private mode is on. That mutes everything! It is supposed to automatically switch off, but there is a menu item for it, where you can check if it's on, and then de-select it. If the system is 'stuck' in private mode, that would be a service issue, unless as Simon mentioned, your phone is only partially compatible. Best bet is to check another phone first.

I find this thread interesting--I've been reviewing both the owner's manual AND the instruction booklet on the bluetooth phone system looking for the interaction between the phone system (bluetooth) and the muting of the stereo (short of tapping the MUTE button on the steering wheel or the radio itself). My phone is a compatible one--there is a place on the mfr's website to verify. All the other features work fine--callers say the voice is clear, no other major issues. I just can't find how to set up the system to cause the radio to mute when placing or receiving a call. Any advice? I should add that I'm not experiencing the same problems as "Coug" above...everything else works w/o problems...

Thanks--as always!

Dan, you may have one of the "mystery bugs." Check pages 143 & 159 in the DIS manual. Both indicate the audio source playing is automatically muted. Check around again for your mute button. I don't believe we have one.

I did get to the problem of my sound system muting just when the bluetooth connects. I have a Samsung "smartphone". If the phone is just "on" and it pairs with the car's bluetooth, everything works fine. But the cottin' pickin' phone constantly tries to connect to "broadband". As soon as it connects to broadband, that is when my car sound mutes. I haven't figured out yet how to disable the broadband on the phone.

When I can keep it in "phone only" mode, the bluetooth works well. The car sound system automatically mutes when I place a call, and automatically returns when the call ends.

You would think a Korean brand phone would if anything be more compatible with a Korean car... Figures.

Ric--

Pardon my apparent ignorance, but exactly what is the "DIS" manual?

Thanks!

Pardon my apparent ignorance, but exactly what is the "DIS" manual?QUOTE]

DIS = Driver Information System, which is Hyundai's name for the iDrive-like knob that controls Nav, audio, phone, etc. on cars with the Tech Pkg. Given all the functionality embedded in the DIS system, the DIS owner's manual has roughly the same number of pages as the standard owner's manual.

Hey guys--

That explains why I had no clue (about this, anyway...)! I don't have the tech package...got the Premium Plus....but no tech!

Any advice for figuring out how to mute the sound system when the phone rings via Bluetooth...for those of us w/o the package?

Thanks--as always!

Dan

The bluetooth in the non tech package is made by Johnson Controls and it won't mute the stereo. It's a repackaged blueconnect system.

I'd read thru the entire (short) manual on that system and arrived at the same conclusion...but thanks, just the same! Guess I'll continue to hit the mute button on the wheel...(it's such a tough life)!

rv65 you sound tech-knowledgeable. Any idea about the buzz some of us are getting when starting and stopping the car using the push-button start? (It is described earlier in this thread).

Thanks!

You've just answered my exact problem too! I had my Genesis going on two weeks and today is really the first day I've driven it except from the dealer (we've had a lot of rain and didn't want to get dirty). Before I left the dealer we paired my phone to the bluetooth, made several calls, all audio worked fine. One the drive home in my excitement I was calling folks everyone, and the audio still worked fine. Now today I'm driving, switching between AM/FM and XM, making phone calls and all is good for this drive of about 30 minutes. Then all of a sudden, SOUND IS GONE!!! No bluetooth, no radio, no XM, nothing! But all the other functions are there, dialing, connecting, switching channels, just can't hear anything! Car has been shut off about 15 mins, so I won't turn on phone, and will start car and see if have audio. If not, I'm going to be too upset and will be at dealer tomorrow. I"m going to tell them about it anyway because this makes no sense, and they need to fix ASAP, do a recall or whatever!

At the moment, my cell phone is NOT a bluetooth phone. I've never felt that I needed one. Since I bougt my Genesis, I've been thinking of buying one from Cellhut.com but now, I don't know. Everything works fine so far, on my DIS (except I don't get the altitude on the position screen, but I can live with it) plus it is taking me a lot of time to learn all the things the DIS offers. Still a lot of things I'm learning and sometimes I learn to do something, then on the next day or so, I forgot how I did it.

If and when I do buy a phone from cellhut.com it will be as follows:
1. It must be bluetooth capable.
2. It must be a Quad Band Phone.
3. It must be unlocked so I can install the SIM card from my present GSM phone to the new bluetooth phone, plus when I go overseas, I want to be able to install a European SIM card in order to save money on calls to and from Europe.

FYI, both my cell phones use the GSM system and they both work great in Europe, however my carrier socks it to me with charges when I do use them in Europe. Next time I go, I will keep my main phone on my American phone number for when anyone in the US needs to phone me, and my second phone will have a European SIM card with a French (or Italian) phone number (from www.callineurope.com ) in it, as it will cost me very little to use even including the cost of the SIM card.

If you use your phone in the car much at all, you should go ahead and pull the trigger on a new bluetooth phone. The phone features on the Genesis work great and really add to the enjoyment of the car.
