  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Dealership says I need a new head unit for my 2015 with less than 20k miles. When I use a navigation all the speakers except one go out. When I turn the vehicle off and then restart the system resets and the speakers work again until I use the navigation again. Genesis refuses to replace the head unit, even though the mileage on the car is so low. Vehicle was purchased early 2016, so warranty just expired.. Estimate to have head unit replaced is between $5,000 and $7,000. What a kick in the pants that genesis will not take care of this at their expense. This is the last genesis vehicle for me, even though my wife wants a fully loaded GV70. It's obvious that genesis does not stand behind their product.

If you don't have an Ultimate, you're in luck - You can score the 8 inchers all day long off ebay for 2 or $300. The 9.2"s are around 700 - $1000.

Got the Ultimate. Should have mentioned that.

The 2015 had more problems with the head unit. Mine was replaced too. They changed suppliers for the 2016 and newer.

I understand being upset at the cost but that is the terms of their warranty and other car makers do the same. One reason I now by Hyundai/Genesis cars.

I'd trade it in and not use the navigation so it works when they make a trade in offer.

Why would I trade in this car with only 19,500 miles? It looks like new and is flawless inside and out. Nobody takes better care of their vehicles than I do. My post was to see if anyone else has experienced this problem?

The bill for the one on mine that got replaced by aftermarket warranty was about $2700. Seems like about $3K is the norm, any more and I'd check with a different dealer. There is almost no labor in the task.

To avoid paying for a $5000 repair. Maybe a good electronics guy can fix it.

Okay, will do. The service tech said this was an off-the-top-of-his-head estimate. Never did get the exact cost.

So many functions go through the head unit, I bought a warranty through my credit union when I bought my '16. Even with the cost of the warranty, I got a good deal on the car and if I ever need it, I really got a good deal! I am glad to hear the '16s are better quality and am sorry to hear about your unit.

I was able to get the warranty because of financing it through my CU. Maybe you could re-finance it (or finance it) and buy a warranty, wait a month or 2 and then maybe it went out? Or better yet, call one of those TV commercials that are on 24 hours a day about car warranties! The problem is the dealership you took it to has probably entered it in the database that it is bad and you could get caught, unless you say it started working fine and then after buying the warranty it started to act up again.

Check junk yards. There is bound to be a used h/u available. As for installation, you need a mechanic with one of those fancy scanners to complete the install and calibration.
If you can't find one, getting a new one sets you back $3k (as you already know).

I'd do that & hit up ebay... The dash @ the unit isn't that tough to take apart. I've seen a YouTube vid of some guys in Korea doing it.

I couldn't find that video very quickly but here's another -

1. You have a Hyundai, not a Genesis.
2. In 2015, the radio was only covered for 3yr/36k miles. They didn't go to the 5/60 until the 2016 model year, so you are way out of warranty.
3. Your service advisor needs to actually do his job and quit guessing on the pricing. Hyundai has an exchange program with their head units and the dealers can exchange your defective one with a remanufactured unit for a very reasonable price. I sell them for $1k or less, depending on the unit. It sounds like he was guessing on price for a brand new head unit, where there isn't an exchange unit available.

in 2015 it was the same 5yr/60K that genesis is now, even the same 10/100K drivetrain.

That's great to hear they have an alternate cheaper way to repair these, but it seems none of the service advisors know. Goes back to your statement "Your service advisor needs to actually do his job".

My 9.2" unit was replaced back in 2015 by the previous owner at ~ 20k miles under warranty. I'm the 2nd owner now @ 91k miles and the replacement is still going strong... So, the replacements obviously have their issues resolved.

Curious to know what the main failure points are though...

It's 3/36. Trust me, I've been with Hyundai for 19 years, and I deal with this day in and day out.

Straight from our Warranty Coverage Guide given to us by Hyundai.

Thanks for the image. I missed that you said it was the radio/nav warranty and thought you were referring to the whole car at 3/36. I stated earlier it was less, but didn't recall the correct figure. I was at ~40K or so when mine and thus not covered by Hyundai. Thank goodness for the aftermarket coverage I had.

Agreed; your 2015 has fewer miles on it than my 2020 G70 (currently sitting at around 23K and still has "new car smell"). As for the head-units, unfortunately, the manufacturer, Harmon Kardon, has historically had some QC problems. The head-units in both my 2015 V8 Ultimate and my 2020 G70 were defective from the factory and had to be replaced before the cars had 1000 miles on them.

The radio/nav unit on my 2015 Genesis 5.0 has internal failure, according to the dealer. I’m thinking about buying a used unit off eBay and trying to replace it myself. Any advice? Will I have to reprogram anything other than the radio stations? Any comments will be appreciated.
