  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

hey guys, my 2009 Hyundai genesis V8 front strut (and springs) with 163k in need of replace, can you guys point me to either an aftermarket or OEM website that sells these? I think I read in the past that putting 2011+ model will give better ride, I have no complaints now but softer wouldnt hurt. I am not going for aesthetic or anything. I was going to ebay, but I wanted to see if you guys had anything recommendation.

on another note, this car is super reliable, I have not had an engine problem (or any) mechanical issue, I paid +$2000 for an extended warranty and use it maybe 2-3 times for the seats. Test drove the newer model and I dont know if I'm impress at all? maybe the older version already set such a high bar, to get anything better than that is just an extra cherry on top. It felt smaller inside and maybe the audio wasnt as good. maybe it wasnt the ultimate that I was driving.

The OEM struts are fine. They should be replaced in pairs (not just one side). The springs are probably OK as they were quite firm.

If you decide to use 2011 struts, you should use 2011 springs, as they are matched together. So if you were satisfied with the 2009's before they needed to be replaced, I would stick with those.

If you want to purchase them online, you can google "Hyundai parts online" where you will find Hyundai dealers who sell online.

are there after market? problem is I dont know how long it has left as far as engine life goes, I dont want to drop brand new parts and the engine die 10k miles later, I would love for it to run to a million mile but I dont think many vehicle make it there. Dealership quote me +$1500 to replace the front.

I would not go with after-market. The OEM struts are quite good, and matched to the springs. Buy the parts online (about $315 for the pair) and find a suspension shop that will do the labor for about $250. This assumes you keep the existing springs, which I highly recommend.

2012 had vastly improved ride over the 2009-2010. 2011 was in between. So get 2012 parts if you can.

Garcia Factory & KDM Motors have made genesis suspension parts for many years. Mostly performance upgrades, coilovers, air ride, etc. All these upgrades will cost more than $1500 for the car, so your dealer price of $1500 is probably the best OEM-like option unless they offer OEM replacement options that they don't show on their websites...

I believe he only needs to replace the two front struts. He can keep the front springs, rear springs and rear shocks, and everything else. Actually only one strut has a problem, but they should always be replaced in pairs or the car may lean or drift to one side, especially when talking about an 8 year old car.

Replacing just the struts on a 2009 model with ones from a 2012 (or an after-market version) would be highly unadvisable unless one is willing to replace all springs, all struts, all shocks, and front and rear stabilizer bars. Otherwise, the suspension is likely to be way out of whack. As you noted, the 2012 suspension is vastly different than 2009-2011. The springs and shocks must be tuned together or else one will overpower the other, and front and rear suspension should have similar characteristics.

Aside from some coilovers, including an unsanctioned "Bilstein" kit from Korea (Which Bilstein said they did not make and the kit in question does not even use their components, just painted like them), there is nothing.

So OEM new or OEM used is the only other route.

The cost of a pair of front OEM struts for the 2009 V8 is $315 via online purchase. No tax, plus shipping. I think that is a reasonable price. Make sure to NOT use struts for the 3.8 V6, as they are not built to handle the extra 200 lbs on the front end of the 2009 Genesis V8.
