Need to replace driver's side mirror assembly

Hi Guys,

My driver's side mirror shell/boot took a massive crack over the weekend, and per the dealership the entire assembly is going to have to be replaced. Quote includes:

New mirror assembly - $651.30
Paint to match (paint and application) - $100
Installation - $85

Total: $836.30

Do these values seem reasonable? Anyone know of any other sources for the mirror which could be less expensive? (Such as from Hyundai directly to avoid any dealer mark-up.)

What I did to verify costs was to go to such sites as Hyundai Parts 4U and look up their costs (plus shipping). Look under Door, Outside Mirrors. I have used such costs to negotiate dealer quotes down. Of course, that was with GM, I don't know about Hyundai.

Any other Hyundai dealers in your area? You might also want to surf the web to see if any other Hyundai dealers sell parts discounted on the web. You can always find accessories, but I haven't seen many parts. You may be stuck with your quote it you want genuine OEM parts.

What is your insurance deductable? I'm sure the damage is covered by your auto insurance less the dedustable. However, if you are like me, my deductable is 1000.00.

There's an unpainted one on eBay with a "buy it now" price of $181.03 plus $12 shipping. That beats the pants off of $651.30!! You'll still have to get it painted. $85 for installation is a rip-off. It's an easy process (took me 10 minutes to remove and replace mine. You just need be careful with the weather seal and the trim.

OMG, Mike-- That does appear to be a stellar deal. For some reason it never even occurred to me to look on. Only thing is I don't think it's the same mirror. Mine is 87611-3M580, that is a 87610-3M500. I guess the 2011 mirrors are different. I think I read somewhere that the 2011 mirrors are heated whereas 2010 and before aren't. So maybe the question is if I want to pay an extra $450 for the heating feature... Can anyone confirm that the 2009 and 2010 models are at least auto-dimming?

Sorry. Didn't catch that you had a 2011. Those on eBay were indeed for 2009/10 models.

Well, the dealership checked for me and indicated that the mirrors from 2009/2010 aren't interchangeable with 2011. I have to wonder if that's legit or if they really want the markup on what they're selling me. (Anyone have any input on the interchangeability?)

Anyhow, I gave the go-ahead to proceed with the order on January 31st, and asked that they send me an e-mail when the order had actually been placed. No response by February 3rd, so I sent another mail asking about status and they said the order had been placed. Yesterday (February 14th) I sent another e-mail to check on status, and I'm told that the part is "back ordered", unavailable from their distributor, and they're unable to provide an ETA.

Here's the question -- Am I right to make a big deal out of this? I've been driving around for two weeks since the order was placed with a thoroughly busted mirror assembly (I don't know that rain isn't getting down inside somehow and causing additional damage), and based on the initial rough estimate I was provided of one week for delivery I've been expecting for the last week to get a call any day saying that the part was ready for installation. Instead of that I have to be proactive and contact them again only to find out that the part is indefinitely unavailable. Sure I got an apology, but how does one justify the lack of communication?

Mirrors, plus body work, can be mighty expensive. Years ago my daughter ripped the passenger side mirror off my new (at the time) Sable while backing out of the garage (it wasn't her fault, of course). As I recall, the replacement including labor and bodywork was well over $600.

That's exactly right. The right-hand garage door frame actually moved left and snagged the mirror just as my daughter was backing out. Damndest thing I ever heard of!

Don't know about the mirror assembly, but with it having movement, the turn signal, and heat element...I wouldn't doubt it. The paint is about the right price. Install shouldn't take more than 15 minutes, but most places charge an hour minimum.
