If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi all,

I've always been a fan of the Genesis (forum join date 5/13/08) ever since they came out. Since late 2013, I've had a 2008 E92 BMW M3 six speed. What an incredible car! I had so many fond memories; especially drives I went on with fellow BMW owners to places like Leavenworth, WA.

Unfortunately, the maintenance and repairs of the car are scary high, even with the discount I get from my mechanic (who's a former BMW lead tech). Added to that, the car abysmal fuel economy and (very) firm ride made driving it daily tiresome and annoying.

To that end, I decided to get rid of it and find a nice daily driver. I actually settled on getting the Mazda 6, and would have gotten it if I didn't see the Genesis sedans at a dealership not terribly far from me going for almost $4K under sticker. After a short test drive, I was sold, and now I'm the proud of a 2016 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 signature. Some early impressions

+ very quiet .. though this may be skewed somewhat by my experience in the M3 which had ample tire noise and the lovely engine...
+ plush ride ... again, skewed as anything other than a tank would be plush in comparison to my E92 BMW M3. I was also stuck in the stiffest setting due to sensor malfunctioning in that car.
+ increased fuel economy .. This goes without saying. I would have still gotten the V6 even if I could had the V8 for the same money. Averaging a little under 22 mpg...
+ refined engine/transmission .. I find the engine's power very much satisfactory. I never felt like I was wishing for more. The 8-speed automatic is very smooth, and most of the time, I couldn't tell when the shifts were happening without looking at the tachometer. I also like that it doesn't hunt for gears, and responds quickly to throttle inputs.
+ nicely executed interior... You won't find a nicer interior for the money
+ nicely equipped .. Though I didn't get the tech/ultimate package, it feels like you still get a lot for your money. I love the cooled seats (it's rather warm this week in Seattle!)

.. and there are some things I think can be improved

- rather thin steering wheel. Thicker steering wheel means less fatigue on the hands. Some contrasting stitching wouldn't hurt aesthetically speaking either ...
- Navigation is not totally accurate. It was quite a ways off from where it said my house is and where it actually is located. I hope for Google Maps integration down the road. It's the gold standard for any kind of navigation software
- No rotary/control knob for the navigation? I hate to get fingerprints all over the screen. Though it does respond to inputs rather quickly. This can be somewhat alleviated by learning voice commands, but still noteworthy nonetheless
- Wheel design is uninspiring to say the least. I'll be switching them out for VMR 710's in gunmetal grey in a few months.
- Key fob looks/feels cheap. Nitpicking here, but it doesn't convey "luxury" like those smart cards that are available for Genesis owners outside of the U.S.

If you are using an Android phone, you can get your Google Maps.
Go to MyHyundai, and there will be a software update available for your NAV system.

The update offers both Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Map update for your stock NAV.

The update for the Map may, or may not correct your Map issue, but if you use Google Maps, or Apple Maps depending on your phone, the maps are always up to date, and are exactly the same as what you will see on your phone.

You will also benefit from better voice command integration through Google, or Siri, and you will get integrated Text Messaging and Music streaming.

There are many posts on this forum that have more detail.

Welcome aboard! Thank you for signing up and congratulations on your new Genesis sedan!

Congrats on the new ride

Bunkei...just curious, I too have a '16 Genesis but mine has the Genesis emblem on the trunk center and I see yours has the Hyundai emblem.

Any ideas as to why there is a difference on the same cars?

^^^ Some dealers swap out the rear H for the winged Genesis emblem as a matter of course. Most don't. But almost all will sell and install one if you wish.

Congrats on the new ride and the fastest colour! Don't agree with you on the steering wheel (I find chunky wheels with oversized palm swells uncomfortable on long drives) but definitely agree with you on the fob - the one for my wife's Fit is nicer.

The tech at my Hyundai dealer prepped a couple of 2016 Hyundai Genesis about a week ago. He noticed that they have been coming with Wings on the back for a while now. (These are NOT G80s, but rather recent 2016s, and he says that they are now coming with the wings directly from Hyundai)

Thanks for the heads up!! :D

Unfortunately, they didn't activate my VIN for Bluelink access. The car is great, but the dealership has a long way to go to match the customer service offered by the likes of Lexus and/or Infiniti.

FYI - You don't need Bluelink for any of this. Your Nav system will work fine without it. You do need Bluelink for the Google Search by voice when using the stock NAV. When using Google or Apple Maps via Android Auto or CarPlay, you don't use Blue link at all. In those cases your phone data is used.

It still has to be done at a dealer according to the FAQ:

FAQ's
When and how can I update my navigation system?

Updates are available through Hyundai dealerships. Depending on your vehicle and the system with which it is equipped, an update can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours.

To ensure the update is done correctly, please take your vehicle into a Hyundai dealership. If it is done improperly, the entire unit may be wiped out and is expensive to replace.

**Edit** I found the Android Auto guide, and because the VIN hasn't been activated, I cannot add my car to my account. For some reason, that's required in order to get to the page to download the software.

I leased a new 2016 Genesis 3.8 with the Ultimate Package a few weeks ago. For those with the same, Android play is not available. Why does Hyundai limit the capabilities of their upgraded system? The audio system on my 2012 Genesis 4.6 won't stream music but the base system would?

I noticed the navigation/map information on the new 2016 was not showing the latest data, i.e., newer roads and speed limits. I emailed Genesis Customer Care through MyHyundai.com to ask about current map software. They referred me to mapnsoft.com for updates. Two new updates have come out since the version in my new car. The cost for the latest update would be $245.70. I contacted my dealer and they quoted $340. They said if I did it myself I could damage the system.

I contacted Genesis Customer Care by phone to express my dissatisfaction. They said I should pay for the update and send a request to them for reimbursement which they would forward to Hyundai. They cautioned I may not be reimbursed. When I asked for assurance first, they said Hyundai wouldn't allow them to do that. What value does Genesis Customer Care have if Hyundai hasn't enabled them?

I took delivery of a new car. The current map software should have been included. It will take more than a name change for Hyundai to make it to the big league. A reputation for customer service has to be earned.

I'm not sure if this will help, but I just updated the navigation system in my G2 3.8 yesterday. Simply go to myhyundai.com and register, if you haven't already. After you're logged in, you'll see "Downloads" tab near the top. Click on that, and it will take you to the page where you can update your Navigation to get access to Android Auto/Apple Carplay. There's a microSD card in the middle of the console (it has a covering on it, so it is hard to spot at first). You'll have to remove it and go to a PC that has a MicroSD reader (most laptops have the feature). After you download the update, it'll automatically install it on to the MicroSD card, after which you put it back into the slot on the center console. It will take about an hour to update, and your car must be on and running for the entire length of the update.

Now I don't know if this will address the particular issue you're having, but it's worth a try.

Tell me how it goes,

~Ben

The update won't work for Dex 13 because he has an ultimate with the 9.2" DIS system. No CP or AA for that unit.

dex13 -
I can understand your disappointment. This issue is not unique to Hyundai. Hyundai has stated that there is a hardware limitation that prevents the DIS system from being updated. It remains to be seen if this will be remedied for the 2017 G80. If it is fixed, it will be due to a modification in the hardware itself, not just a firmware change.

Just like cars have development cycles, NAV/Audio systems also have them. When cars have multiple system options, they are usually a couple of years apart in development.

For the Genesis, while the DIS is the more deluxe system, it is also the older platform. The AVN 4.5 Touch Screen systems are based on newer architecture. The DIS system in your car is pretty similar, and shares the platform from the Equus, which is not quite as new as the AVN platform. Bottom line, the same issue has happened on Ford, Chrysler, and others.
