  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

hey all, im a new member from wi, purchased a 2011 4.6 sedan a few months back, i just ordered some new wheels for the car but i cant decide what tires to put on them. guy at the wheel shop is recomending a 245 35 20, i would like to go to a 255 all around and possibly a 40 series, i do not want to sacrifice ride quality with a low pro tire...does anyone know if there will be a clearance issue if i put a 40 or 45 series tire on the 20'' rim??

thanks - andrew

i do not want to sacrifice ride quality with a low pro tire...
You will always sacrifice ride quality with a lower profile tire, given same tire brand and model (also usually true even when comparing different brands/models).

i understand that ride quality goes down on the low profile tire....thats why my question was has anyone put a 40 or a 45 series on a 20 inch wheel, and will it fit without rubbing...

There are a lot of other threads/posts on this subject. But I don't recall the specifics. Try the search function.

Check and make sure the revs per mile are close on the tires as compared to oem tire or the speedometer and cruise control will be incorrect.

thanks for the tip, i will post some pictures when i have them put on in a few weeks...cant wait

We have no idea if 255s fit because we don't know what wheel width and offset the wheels you got are.

255/35/18 is the correct size for a 255. They need to match the rolling circumference of the stock tires. 255/40 and 255/45 are way too big. As mentioned it will affect the speedometer and odometer.

Might want to use this tire/wheel size calculator
http://www.miata.net/garage/
Select "TIRES and WHEELS"
Caution do not download new java program. Select old program and scroll down to enter tire sizes.
New java program loads a bunch of junk along with the upgrade that’s a Bit*h to get rid of.

Use this calculator. It works better and there aren't any downloads to worry about.http://tire-size-conversion.com/tire-size-calculator/

I have noticed you make a lot of odd comments especially about wheels. I'm sure a rough car ride is quite a bit different from a 30 year old to a 65 year old.

Stay away from performance cars if you think a Genesis with 1 size up wheels over stock offerings is a "rough" ride.

I don't think the ride will be killer, but certainly not as good as on his old 18"s.

Just posted pics in the custom wheels thread if anyone's interested

The Gensis is NOT a performance car. It's a mid-luxury car and the pre-2012s have a rough ride. Fact, not opinion. Do you even own a Genesis? And since when is 245 35 20 only ONE step up from a 4.6L w/235/50/18s then you need to do a little more research. Now, before you trolling and/or flaming my opinion, go buy one and get some experience with it. Now, if you want a car that has no lean in a curve and no nose dive when slamming on brakes for sudden stops, then get yourself a Batmobile. Now, notice that. bbbaaaaaawwwwwaaaaaaahhhhhhhaaaaaaaa

Im running 245/35/20 and 255/35/20. Im so over people on this board making statements without even understanding what they are talking about. Yes low profile tires can ride rougher but what people don't understand is all profiles aren't the same. For instance, my 245/35/20 isn't going to have the same height sidewall as a 215/35/20, the 215 is going to have a drastically shorter sidewall than the 245. Your forgetting its a ratio of sidewall’s section height to the tire’s section width. So the wider the tire(245) at the same sidewall number(35), the sidewall height goes up as the width goes up. So saying a 35 or 40 sidewall is gonna suck or have no sidewall is not true. It is all gonna depend on how wide the tire is as well as the manufacturer.

yikes are you saying that the 2011 4.6 that I'm about to buy has a rough ride compared to a 2012 4.6?!

What has made this difference? Is it something that can be retrofitted on a 2011, like different strut cartridges, swaybar, etc?

There was like 4 or 5 suspension revisions from the introduction of the Genesis in 2009 - 2012. Each revision made the ride a little bit better in terms of comfort. The 2012 cars seem to have done the job. I'm actually awaiting my order of 2012 R Spec Springs and stuts/shocks. I am replacing/upgrading my 2009's suspension. Last October, I was able to drive an R Spec (Thanks to EXBMWGUY) and was very impressed with the suspension. The car seemed to be much more planted to the road, and also more comfortable of a ride.

Take the 2011 out on some bumpy roads before you purchase and see what you think. The 2011 suspension is better then the 2009 suspension.

yeah, I did drive the 2011 on some bumpy roads and I wasn't impressed. However, most of my driving is highway and it was pretty smooth and quiet there.

Are there any upgrades that I can do to the 2011 that will increase ride comfort? I'm not interested in better handling, just the best comfort.

Changing out the suspension is really the only way to get a MAJOR improvement, but great tires also help. Changing out suspension is something that probably most people wouldn't even consider due to price and hassle, but this is way cheaper then me buying a new Genesis. Mine's paid off:)
