Hey guys,
I just hit the end of week 5 with my 2015 5.0 Ultimate in Empire State Gray on Black. I checked out as many issues as I could here, before deciding to buy and tried to look at all the common issues when I was test driving. Thanks for all the knowledge!
It had a little over 47,000 miles when I bought it (nearing 50k already now) and I traded my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit (4x4, V6). My goal was to lower payments to save quicker for a house and get into a car without air suspension that I wouldn't be so worried to own outside factory warranty. (I bought the Jeep "new" at 4400 miles and sold it with just under 55k miles) I was able to get $26300 for the Jeep and paid $24000 for the Genesis out the door.
A little backstory about my car:
One-owner purchased in the STL area (which is where I went to purchase on a used VW/Subaru lot) serviced there, and sold there. No accidents on the carfax, consistent oil change history. I had already worked a deal remotely before I took the 5 hour drive to go see the car. The day before I was planning to drive up, I requested the warranty work history on the VIN from my local dealer. One entry stuck out to me out of the 10 or so that all occurred within a month of each other at 42k miles, it just said "ENGINE ASSY-SHORT." Shortblock, did they replace the shortblock in this car. What? Why? The selling dealer was dumbfounded, they had no idea about this (even though they had a Hyundai store just half a mile down the street in the same autogroup) and my dealership couldn't provide me any other info other than the warranty claim info.
So I called the dealer that had done all this warranty work, the SA I spoke with took a few seconds looking up the records at which point he chuckled and asked if I had a few minutes. So into the story we went:
What do you guys think? Ticking time bomb? I've never found this issue anywhere else on the 'ol interwebs.
It seems I have the majority of the other common problems of this generation: rattly/noisy sunroof with terrible looking center rubber seal, "flutter" from I guess the driveshaft at 25-30mph... And then a concerning not-so-common one: steering wheel and column that shift side to side while driving...
I absolutely love this car. The Jeep was great, other than the poorly tuned air suspension that would throw the body around with the slightest undulation in the road surface, but the Genesis is just a sheer joy to drive. I've owned BMW and Infinifi, and they didn't hold a candle to how well rounded and sorted this car is in pretty much every way. It puts miles behind you so effortlessly and I'm still getting BETTER gas mileage out of a 420hp V8 (that sounds awesome) than I got in a V6 SUV (that only weighed about 400lbs more than this beast.) Indicated 26.5ish (so probably 24) on the highway is plenty good enough for me with the cruise mostly set at 80. I'm very happy with this choice. What do you guys think? I'll post pics when I get her back from the dealer and get a good wash a fresh coat of wax on her.

- Customer brings car in for rough idle, hesitation and blinking Check Engine lamp.
- Diagnose misfire on cyl 8 --> swap coil packs, replace coil packs on that bank, replace injectors on that bank (cyl 8 injector stuck open), still misfiring
- Target injector electronics for failure --> replace injector harness on that bank, replace injector driver (I guess a processor specifically controlling the injectors...?), still misfiring
- Target other electronics --> Replace ECM and PCM, still misfiring
- Techline request leakdown compression test --> Slightly low on cyl 8 (assume fuel soak from open injector ruined ring seal), advise replace short block, still misfiring (keep in mind that short block kit includes all bottom-end pieces, so new block, crankshaft, pistons, rings, rods, pins, bearings, seals, everything)
- This one I didn't understand, the SA said something about finding oil in the head pooling somewhere. Seems that oil anywhere in the head is normal as everything in there needs lubrication, but due to the pooling Techline advised to Replace head. The customer intervened to corporate and basically said, uh-uh, don't just replace half, if the whole thing is being rebuilt again, replace both heads. They approved. (Again, everything in a kit, so all new head, cams, valves, springs, lifters, timing chains and pulleys, VVT parts, everything)
- Finally all back together the misfire was gone it had been in the shop for over a month.
