New motor mount design???

I've been waiting for a month and a half for my dealership to receive new motor mounts for my Genesis 3.8 RWD. They diagnosed the excessive vibration at idle as motor mounts and sent me on my way saying parts needed to be ordered (July). Called back a few weeks later (August), parts are on backorder. Called this week and was told that a new part is being developed and can be ordered starting October 1st.

Not sure if I'm just getting my chain yanked because I'm no longer under factory warranty (used car @ 55k miles now) but it does seem highly unlikely that Hyundai would spend money creating new motor mounts for the DH Genesis (even the G80) as there's a brand new one coming out...

Thoughts?

Well, auto makers do redesign some parts for better performance if a flaw is discovered. Maybe the newer motor mount will be sourced from the newest 2021 model, however I will be surprised that it would fit the older model.

However, it high likely that the part probably still on back-order until October and the person just told you something positive to appease you that sounds good..

Can I assume you were out of warranty at first? I don't see why they would push you off and not take your money.

Yeah, was already out of warranty so the work would've been fully paid, not a warranty comp. Which I thought would be much more attractive. Warranty work normally pays very specific rates to fix stuff.

A motor mount going bad at 50+k sounds fishy. Could happen but... rather unlikely. If the engine idles normally it shouldn't vibrate. Did they do any engine diagnosing first? If not, I'd be dragging it to a reputable shop to check engine parameters via computer. Many things can cause a rough idle. Fuel injectors, pressure, timings, trims, air leaks, bent valves etc.

If the dealer is certain it's bad motor mounts, make sure they guarantee their work will fix the issue.

Its actually my second set. They last replaced it at like 45k.

I agree with you that the underlying problem isnt resolved. The shot motor mounts is probably because of XYZ and the dealer is just replacing mounts because thats the easiest. Overall, this experience is turning me away from the brand. With used car prices high, I may sell and drive one of my other vehicles until I see something I like.

Vibrations throughout the car - can even feel in in the floor. Especially bad when in idle at a stop light, even worse w/ the AC on when its hot (Phoenix AZ).

Vibrations get better if i shift to neutral. If i'm moving, not noticeable over other road variations.

So... they replaced the mounts 10k ago and now these are bad? You'd have a horrible vibration to kill a set of mounts in 10k. No way. There's other issues. I'd have it scanned/diagnosed with good equipment. Did the dealer do this first?

If they won't give you a straight answer, get on the phone and start calling repair shops and pick their brains. Go with the one that you feel listens to you and thoughtfully approaches the problem. You should be able to weed out the B/S'ers (there's lot's of those).

All dealer maintained. I could do everything you stated above but why should I, its a dealer-only machine right now. Its under an extended warranty and frankly if it's going to spend time in shops than I'd rather just buy a German car do the maintenance myself (as I used to). This car is nice but its 8/10th where as an Audi/Porsche/BMW gives you that final 2/10ths but comes with, what appears to be, similar reliability challenges (my pano roof still struggles to work correctly, I've given up). The difference between a Genesis and a German car is there is a deluge of data, info and scan tools available on the internet to fix the German cars (and aftermarket support). The point of the Genesis was to have a closer-to-Lexus type of ownership experience (low maintenance costs, high reliability, low customization) but at a better price point/value. Don't get me wrong, the car has never left me stranded but my Lexus has gone 100k+ miles with nothing but scheduled maintenance and I have no concerns with it doing another 100k.

If I had to guess the issue, I would say its not motor mounts or a rough engine idle but instead an imbalanced radiator cooling fan (or some transmission mount..if we have those). You can pop the hood and stare at the engine at idle and it's reasonably vibration-free indicating the motor/mounts are fine. My theory is an imbalanced radiator fan vibration is hidden behind a brand new motor mount (hydraulic isolator) but as the mount ages the imbalanced fan is more apparent. I have no faith that this will be fixed by the dealer in the next 6 months. The weather in Phoenix is getting better and that radiator fan is going to stop running all together soon. The dealer will replace mounts, do a test drive and call it fixed - as they should because there will be no vibration because the fan isnt running. The biggest reason I say its the fan is because I can feel a slight vibration when the fan continues running after being parked (hot days). Long-story short, I've mentioned the fan is probably the issue but I refuse to hand-hold a dealership or mechanic that I'm paying (through a warranty or otherwise) to a solution to a problem I'm having. I also don't expect the dealer or mechanic to spend their time on my hypothesis - I'm not a trained expert in cars, I work in Finance/IT for a living. No one likes it when someone tells them how to do their job.

edit: I also had an issue with a bouncy-idle too. Car would dip below 500rpm then bounce to 800rpm in a never-ending loop, at stop lights. Happens occasionally but can never replicate.

Electric radiator fans are typically attached to the radiator, which is attached to the chassis, not the engine, so it seems unlikely that motor mounts new/old/good/bad would have any affect on what you might feel from it.

Agree. That's why myself and pretty much everyone on this thread thinks it's not the mounts.
