  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

About 3 weeks ago I traded in my 2011 Sonata Hybrid Premium for a Platinum Silver 2012 Premium Genesis. I had searched long and hard before finding the one I wanted, looking for a one owner car, non smoker, non rental. The one I found had 37,000kms on it and looked like a new car inside and out.

It was hard to give up the Sonata Hybrid, as the practical side of my brain appreciated the great gas mileage (although not class leading). I had my Hybrid pimped out, easily the best looking Hybrid on the road, de-badged, Enkei wheels, it got more looks than any car I’ve EVER driven. But what motivated me to make the switch was that I was simply tired of the “golf cart” feel of the hybrid. From a stop it would accelerate like a golf cart, with odd moments of lag as the electric motor would convert to gas engine. It drove well, but was simply uninspiring. In mixed driving my mileage would be somewhere between 6.5 and 7.5l/100km (31-36mpg). It was very affected by outside temps and number of passengers, hot days or 3-4 passengers would kill mileage. Another thing that irked me about the Sonata was the sensation of body flex in the car. It felt as though the panoramic roof really weakened the car as I was constantly hearing small creaks and groans from the roof when driving over uneven roads or up driveway curbs etc.

So far, I am in love with the Genesis. In the past I've owned a couple Pathfinders, an Acura, BMW 3 series, and VW Touareg. Ride quality of the Genny, in my opinion is amazing. Its dead quiet, with very little noise from train tracks, a nice balance of comfort while still feeling connected in turns. I’ve owned german cars and the Genesis doesn’t handle like one, not even close, its definitely skewed towards all day driving comfort, vs firm cornering. The interior is a breath of fresh air to me, almost Zen like in its flow and simplicity. The dash and all the buttons are laid out beautifully, almost in an “anti-tech” way. I’ve driven in some cars that have so many buttons, switches and tech thingies that I start to twitch. And I am 44 and a commercial artist, by no means do I have an aversion to tech, I just like it used and integrated in a way that is pleasing. The Genesis does this beautifully. The best way I can describe the Genesis is relaxing to the body and relaxing to the eyes, and lord knows I need that.

My experience hasn’t been perfect... i noticed on my first night time drive that my headlights would flicker occasionally when I used the turn signal, already fixed with a new switch. My back-up camera image is terrible (oddly i never checked this during test drives face/palm!). Today they replaced the camera but that didn’t fix the problem. Next is a new head unit.

The play in the shifter... this bothered me, and I made a post about it here http://genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/showthread.php?t=14270, only to find out it is more common than I thought, and therefore I accepted that it was within normal range. But I didn’t rest there. I installed a small unobtrusive bumper made out of high density foam that prevents any play when the shifter is in drive. Magnificent. Cost 50 cents.

Cupholders... my wife and I drink mostly small size coffees from our Holy Canadian Institution called Tim Hortons. The small coffees would fall right to the bottom of the cup holder and hang by the lids. Problem recified for $1.98. I bought two 99 cent hockey pucks and put them in the bottom of the cupholders. Fit is uncanny, no movement, no noise, all success. Easy to clean up in case of spills too.

Upgrades... so far I’ve wrapped the roof in black vinyl (incl shark fin), wings were already on the car, mudflaps were done, debadged the “Genesis” from the back, added the cheapo T5i spoiler from Car-id, which matches perfectly and installed in 10 minutes (tape only, didn’t use included screws). Tint was done by previous owner but I want to darken the two front windows. Added MGP Caliper covers... LOVE these!!. Bought a set of MSR wheels with almost new snow tires off Kijiji... just waiting for alloy pedals and steering wheel wings to arrive.

OK enough rambling, enjoy some pics... thanks for a great forum, I’ve learned alot already.

Lovin my Genny

Thanks! Keeping in mind were talking CAD dollars here, I called around and got prices from $300-350 consistently, some as high as $400. I negotiated this one down to $250. Material cost for 3M 1080 is about $100-120 I believe.

Yeah, been doing some research, for the last 15 min. and noticed that reasonable price would be $150-250

(I need my allowance money from wife)

I edited my previous post to include that material cost for 3M 1080 film would be about us$100-120, so I think 200-250 is fair considering the labor. Took my guy about an hour to do.

That car has the r-spec body style. I didn't know the premium actually gives you the r-spec headlights and the in-bumper exhaust.

As far as I know, in Canada, all the 2012's have the same body style, with those headlights and tail pipes, from base up to r-spec. In Canada we get piano black glossy door pillars too.

I checked into wrapping the whole Genny in Phoenix and it was going to be about $1,600 IIRC so the roof alone should be a lot less.

You're so lucky - you get the R-Spec trim on a 3.8. That's not the case here in the US.

My US-based 3.8 Tech looks the same as the R-Spec as well, except for the wheels (I like the 3.8's better).

I guess I didn't pay enough attention when I looked at the 3.8s... My bad.

I'm in the Niagara Penninsula. Wine country :)

The grape capital of Canada. I am in the tax and waste capital of Canada.

Glad to have you on board. My RSPEC is new as well, 2013 picked up in June of this year
