  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

when I start my car and have it in park and tap my breaks I could hear a clicking noise at the shifter console that could also be felt in the shifter.
When I would drive and press the brakes I could hear the same click and feel it in the shifter. I took my car to the dealer this morning and was informed that they will have my car for a few days as a whole new shifter had to be ordered. The part that failed required the entire shifter to be replaced. This is my first major repair.

I'm glad to hear they replaced it without giving you a hassle.

I have noticed in my 2009 4.6 a clicking or tapping felt through the shifter when applying the break as well - no noise though. Let us know what they say causes the noise and clicking through the shifter. Mine has done this from day one.

I was told that something on the shifter had come loose , the part is not replaceable so an entirely new shifter was ordered. I could both hear the click and feel it in the shifter. I will report back after the repair is completed.

What's the year and miles on your Genesis?

I had problem with shift gear and I got my problem fixed!

I would like to report my shifter problem which sounds siinilae as some of you have experienced. When applying the brake, there is a hard clicking sound in gear shift and I also feel it when I touch the shifting gear.

My car is 2010 Genesis V8 Tech Package. I bought in Jan 2010 and I have 3718 miles on it so far.

I brought it to Huffine Hyundai of Plano. The service advisor, who is very professional, checked it out and aggreed that there is something wrong with the shift gear. They found that my car shifter level is not properly positioned causing noise when brake pedal is applied. They kept my car for 2 days. They installed "felt dampners". I don't know what those are, but my car got fixed. No more clicking sound when applying the brake. No more feel clicking on the shift gear. I noticed my shift gear now sits a little bit lower than before. The clicking sound is now gone and the car is silky smooth when driving, much better than before! My sons noticed that too, in the back passenger seats. They also offered me a free 32 points inspection.

Does anyone know what "felt dampners" parts are?

Wow, less than 4000 miles in over a year. We put about 3600 miles a month on our 2011 Genesis 4.6; last month just over 4000 miles. As to dampners, they are usually somthing to reduce vibration, noise or a pad that is added to a stop plate etc.

I am to get my car back today as the new shifter is due in today. As I stated earlier the dealer said the part that failed could not be replaced so the had to order a new shifter. The car has been at the dealer for four days and as they did not have a Genesis loaner this time, they put me in a Sonata.
One thing I will say about the Genesis is the problems are pretty consistent:
Tilt Wheel (TSB)
Clicking in shifter when applying breaks
Nav update
propeller shaft (spacers) (TSB)
I am just amazed at the number of people who experience the same problems. In no way do these little problems disturb me as all cars have there share. The level of service that I get from my dealer has been great and for the most part I am happy with my Genesis and am thinking the 2012 is going to be hard to pass up asI try to keep a car for at least 3 years before trading. I will post the service order work performed on my car later today.
I purchased my car April 2010 and I have 4,000 miles on it.

More and likely a piece of felt material that they used to level out the shifter. I was told the problem was caused by a part that came loose from the shifter requiring a new shifter to be installed. I will find out more as I am to get the car back today.

They did replace the shifter and the clicking is gone.:)

Felt dampners is a technical way of saying they installed small pieces of felt type tape to certain areas of the shifter assembly to reduce noise. This felt tape is a great invention that can be used to cure most annoying rattles, squeeks and noises.

On the shifter noise.....most likely its caused by what we call a shift lock actuator/solinoid. (I used to be a technician for BMW, Volvo, Hyundai etc.. several years ago) This shift lock assembly is part of the gear shift assembly and is standard on all cars now. Its function is as the name implies. It locks the gear shifter from coming in or out of park unless your foot is on the brake, this is why you hear the noise when you put your foot on the brake pedal. This shift lock should only operate while in Neutral or Park.

It sounds like the shift lock. That is the mechanism that forces you to press the brake pedal to move the transmission out of park. All cars have this today.
