  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

February 13, 2024 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 24V107000
Water Damage to Starter Solenoid May Cause Fire
An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V107000
Manufacturer Hyundai Motor America
Components ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Potential Number of Units Affected 90,907
Summary
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Genesis, 2017-2019 Genesis G80, Genesis G90, and 2019 Genesis G70 vehicles. Water may enter the starter solenoid and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.
Remedy
Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will install a remedy relay kit in the engine junction box, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed April 13, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's numbers for this recall are 254(H) and 018G(G).
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

:Water may enter the starter solenoid if driven through deep water, as a flooded road"

Waiting for remedy docs.

This should get posted in the other sub-forums like G80 and G70. Not sure if there's any way way to do that, or do we just have to start a new thread in those groups?

Is it safe to have the car outside in the rain in general, or is the concern mainly driving on flooded roads. Can the recall be done by any Hyundai dealer or does it have to be a Genesis dealership? My regular Hyundai dealer is a lot closer than the nearest dedicated Genesis dealership.

Parked mine outside for 6 straight years. Rain, snow, sun, you name it. I don't think it ever spent a day in the garage (space).... unless it was in for service.

I also drove it through numerous snow storms and at least 2 significant blizzards (6 hour trip for one of them), and the rain many, many times..

The 15-16 IS branded as a Hyundai - so, I would think Hyundai would do it with out crossing the imaginary line now drawn between G and H - not to mention it is going to be the same solenoid on a large number of Hyundais.

Thanks!! I have a 2017 G80 so will have to see if my Hyundai only dealer can still do the recall.

Oh sorry - I looked at the OP's info under their avatar and conflated it to yours. In that case - Genny might be the only one "allowed" to do it... but it doesn't hurt to try.

is the solenoid located on the passenger side or driver side?
It's on the starter. Which engine do you have? Also, RWD or AWD?

2017 G80 3.8 RWD ... we live in raining Florida and my son drives it so I would like to tell him which side he needs to be careful with when it rains

The starter is on the right (NA passenger) side, but it can probably be splashed from either side. If he doesn't go through any deep water and if the engine under cover is on, it shouldn't be much of an issue.

thanks...and yes the cars' under cover is intact...we actually had an issue with it and had it repaired awhile ago.

The anyone had this starter assembly recall fix performed? The remedy is now available. If so, how long did it take? I have an appt next week to have it done on my 2017 G80. The fix is to install a relay kit in the engine junction box. This doesn't sound like the starter itself. So is the relay kit external to the starter, ie, not the starter itself?

I haven't done that yet, what's the time they allocate for it?

No, it's not on the starter. It will be on the under-hood fuse box.

Basically its a way for the Starter to not have live power at all times. It only sends power when cranking after the relay kit is Installed.

Thank you, joegr. Sounds like a relatively quick fix.

Yeah I got mine done and now I'm having all kinds of problems. I'll turn my car off but the engine won't turn off and when I opened the hood and touched the fuse box cover the starter clicked 3 times and when I took the cover off it went crazy clicking. Now it won't turn on and a ton of codes 9 or 10. I'm going to disconnect the battery and see what's going on in the fuse box. It keeps throwing the fca codes the smartra code air flap codes etc. I wish I never got the starter recall fixed
