  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I always leave the wipers and headlights on auto, and I was a little surprised today that the headlights did not automatically turn on when the wipers started. I thought that this was some sort of law? My last few cars dating back to at least 1994 had this feature. I searched a little on the forum and couldn't find this topic. How is it supposed to work. Could be yet another electrical gremlin like my windows and sometimes auto tilt wheel...

Nope, I don't believe the 1st Gen Genesis gets this (at least up until 2012), though I too have wanted it.

It would be a state law if it exists, which means it might not be universal. Also, some state laws only require it when wipers are on continuously (not intermittent setting). But I wonder how important that is if someone has DRL's, or whether one would get ticketed if the DRL's were on but the headlights off (unless it got really dark enough for headlights to come on automatically).

I doubt that you always leave your wipers on auto when you go through a car wash. So, when it rains just pretend you are entering a car wash EXCEPT turn on your headlights instead of turning off your wipers.

Think of the last blinding rainstorm you drove through and the idiot in front of you who failed to turn on his headlights/taillights. Almost hit the #% ^%¥, didn't you. That's why having DRLs only on doesn't satisfy the laws about turning headlight (taillights) on when it rains.

I have always thought the linkage of automatic headlights to wipers should be self-evident. But, I have never been in a car that coupled the two. If your auto headlights are on, and the auto wipers detect rain, then the auto headlights should turn on.

Maybe the concept has a patent that prevents most automakers from implementing this.

And stay on until you shut off the car?
Or do it like when you are in a tunnel - headlights go off approx 15 secs after it detects daylight again.

And stay on until you shut off the car?
Nah, shut off as soon as the auto wipers are no longer detecting rain, assuming it is not dark yet.

State law in Illinois.
I've caught myself a few times with the auto lights, in the rain, and had to turn them on manually.
In heavy rain, it's dark enough that the lights come on.

I personally hate the regular DRLs so my setup is wipers to auto and lights to on all the time. I like my HID headlights and led eyebrows to be on even during the day(which turns off the ugly DRLs). Hence, no chance of being caught with my lights off :)

My cars don't see a commercial car wash, so this tip won't work for me..

I set my headlights and wipers as auto, both works
