However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. NO changes for 2011 Sedan

Hey everyone, I've been reading these forums for quite a while since I'm interested in buying the Genesis within the next year or so and came across this thread. I read an article that talked about this very topic on Autoblog this morning dated June 23 and they were pretty sure Hyundai would be putting a new bored-out 5.0 liter V8 in the Genesis Sedan and possibly into the Couple later to combat the Mustang. Though it's important to note that they did mention that there was no "official" word from Hyundai on this topic. The Equus would launch with the 4.6 and get the 5.0 when the 2011 Genesis comes out.

That makes sense...and I think I alluded to in an earlier post. When they announced Equus with the current V8 and 6-speed for fall release, it was unlikely they would release the Genesis with updated versions of the same hardware at the same time.

Also note the very low volume numbers for the 2011 Equus.

My guess is both with become 2012 models in January-February 2011. With the DI engines and 8-speed.

Maybe someone at Hyundai misspoke - but it appears more likely that 5.0 Tau will make it into the Genesis about the same time as the Equus.

The Equus luxury sedan will arrive in fall with an expected base sticker price between $55,000 and $60,000. The Equus will debut with a 366-hp 4.6-liter V8 but will have a running change next spring to a direct-injection 5.0-liter V8 with 429 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque, said H.B. Lee, senior manager of Hyundai Motor R&D powertrain development. Hyundai's Genesis sedan will get the new V8 engine at the same time.

It's a very good bet that the 5.0 Genesis launching in the Spring of 2011 will be the mid-generation refresh w/ fairly substantial changes.

Did you guys read the post about the chat on Hyundai Think Tank with John Krafcik? He was quoted as saying that 5.0 is just a rumor and not coming anytime soon. Maybe he was creating mis-information, but I personally doubt it.

^ Yeah, I'm aware of that.

I'm thinking that Krafcik was talking more about the Genesis than the Equus (the KDM LWB Equus is equipped w/ the 5.0, so it wouldn't be a problem to stick it into the USDM Equus), and even w/ the Genesis, he may speaking ambiguously purposely ("anytime soon" can be intrepreted to mean that the Genesis will eventually get the 5.0, just maybe not as early as indicated by the other reports).

New engines for the US will be direct injection. The V8 may be removed from the US Genesis if the V6 goes DI and the Equus is V8.

How many who bought a 385hp V8 wouldn't have bought a Genesis if it only had a 350hp V6? What if the V6 got better mileage than now, maybe 21/30 in the EPA test?

Not many I venture.

If it costs only a $1k more for the V8 like it is with the current model, even with only little HP difference(~50HP), I'd still get the V8.
It's not just the HP number and MPG that's different from V8 to V6.
Torque curve is different, the engine/exhaust note is different.
It's a different driving experience, IMO.

And I think I'm not the only one. I bet there are quite a few people out there who'd sacrifice a little gas money to have the V8.
Financially not a smart decision, I know.

Dan

Yep... the fact that the V8 cost only $1K more was a big reason for me to spring for it. While I get 27 mpg on the highway... driving in the city is a different story. I live about 1.5 miles from work with plenty of stoplights in between. I average 11 mpg and my average speed is 11 mph. By the time I get the car up to 20 mph, I'm at the next light. Would it be silly for me to go out of my way to take the highway (add on another mile or 2) just to bump up the efficiency? I kid... I kid...

I will always buy a V8 as long as they're around. I believe that CAFE standards are for "companies" as a whole. They need to average a certain amount of gas millage combined with all their car models.

350, probably. 290, no.

I still like the V-8 though, for the reasons others have mentioned, especially given the small price premium.

CAFE is going to drive the decision.
Actually I wonder, if that could drive the decisions to keep a single brand, since the comparitively low-volume "luxury" cars could be offset by the high-volume cars like Sonata et al.
