  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello all,
Brand new genesis owner here (32 hours) V8 with tech package. Yesterday after setting up the bluetooth and garage door opener I left the house and I had no sound, no radio, no CD, nothing from the phone or navi. After a trip to the mall started the car and sound is working fine. I left for work this morning, sound still working fine, after work stopped at a store came back out and no sound. Does anybody have any ideas?

Definitely NOT that one. It's for the Premium Plus guys, not Tech.

Is the phone in the car when the problem occurs? If so, what kind of phone, e.g. is it sending data, getting mail, etc. If so, try running around without the phone for awhile and see what happens.

I don't believe we have had this exact scenario on here yet. Sounds like random muting.

Thanks for the phone suggestion. The phone is a HTC tilt from ATT. A "smart phone" and it is tied to my office network so quite often there is an email/calender reminder or something. I'll try clearing all messages before I start the car.

I had the same problem - intermittent sound. I took it in to the dealer and they needed to replace the amp. I have the V8 with the tech package.

Yeaaaah... don't know if that will help. I have an HTC tied to my office network and all the time I get TXT, emails, etc. while driving and it has no effect on the sound system.

The exact same thing happened to me ( I have a 3.8 Tech Package with about 1000 miles ) about 2 weeks ago. It was like it was on mute for the whole 10 minute ride to my destination. I could control everything FM/AM/XM/IPod, but it was like it was muted -- and I could not un-mute

When I got back in the car about 30 minutes later, it was working fine.

I DID have my phone on (which is paired to the Genesis.. a blackberry) but was not receiving a call or anything... but I wondered if the auto-muting that happens when you receive a call somehow got fired off, and it never turned back on.

Anywho... hasn't happened again.. whenever i have to take it in for service (which hopefully isnt anytime soon ).. I was going to ask about it.

Bought our Genesis in October this year (V-6 w/tech) and had similar issues. At times control knob did not function or commands would not respond - no audio on all occassions (aaproximately 6 times between both cars over two months time). No phone synch with system on first car and sometimes steering wheel controls not working/system not responding. Dealership great to work with - we both reached out and got Hyundai Consumer Affairs team involved. Immediate and direct attention to issue, made every attempt to resolve issue with this car. We requested as a compromise to "swap" for the same type car and they agreed. New car was delivered to us in late November. Within 4 days of delivery, similar issues began to occur in new car. They replaced "head unit" in early December - still having same issues. We are scheduled for the "amp" swap out next week. Love the car but having a fairly bumpy ride...........

jcook;

Sorry to hear about your problem. Since it is happening to your second Geny have you checked for any "garage gremlins"?

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
No, didn't think of that one Calvin.....I'll throw a "gremlin bomb" in the garage when I get home today (after I pull our Geny out of course!).

Just to be clear - we wanted to post as soon as problems started in October but was working with Hyundai and getting good response. We were torn between airing our issues while working toward resolution. Now that the same exact (or semi-exact) issues are recurring in the second car we felt compelled to post to see if anyone was having similar issues. We love the car - make no mistake about it - or we would have pushed for a refund and walked away. We did not want to file a Lemon Law claim (although if we did we almost certainly know what the outcome would be at this point) because that would taint the whole Genesis roll-out. All we want is a car that performs as designed and advertised, and to see if there were more out there experiencing these same issues. Maybe we should have waited for the 2010 model to roll out........

No Bliss with our Genesis:(

About how many miles were on the car when all of this started happening?

First Geny was four days after delivery - had about 300 miles on it tops. Second Geny was exactly the same - four days after delivery and less than 300 miles on it. We keep looking for a common denominator but it has happened on wet and dry days, in heat and cold..... As I said, we are scheduled for the "amp" replacement this week. The Dealership said that the new amp was radically different than the one that is already in the car, so maybe some changes have been made? He also said Hyundai was adamant about changing this component as soon as it could be scheduled and further said that the "amp" did more than amplify the music.

J Cook:

I feel your pain.

My V8 Genesis w/Tech Pkg. was doing the same thing. Most of the time, the system worked as advertised, but sometimes, the system would lock up, i.e. nothing worked, except for the Nav system. I could turn off the car, wait a few minutes, let the car reboot and everything would begin working again. I also had the problem with the Voice Command. It was frustrating to drive to the dealer multiple times only to have the audio system and Voice Command work perfectly in their presence. Finally, the system locked up at the dealer and they replaced the entire audio system (about $4200 they said). After two weeks, it works pefectly. BTW, the Amplifier TSB was already done when I purchased the car.

I still have the problem with the Voice Command. Sometimes it works perfectly and other times I have to press the button a few times before it activiates. I will not take it back until it stops working on a regular basis.

Overall, this is a great car and I am very happy.

I've started having problems with the Tech package about three weeks ago. Back then, the problem was intermittent but now is consistent. When the problem first appeared, I lost the radio function for about 20 minutes; I came back by itself

Now, the problem has gotten much worse. When I start the car, I have sound coming out of the radio, but the iDrive knob does nothing. Regardless of what I do, it is non functional.

When I press voice activation, the system immediately mutes the radio and returns with a voice message saying "Please wait". After about 30 sec, I get the "boink", and the system immediately and correctly responds to my voice command message. However, the radio stays off.

So, I'm left with no radio, and no iDrive knob capability.

Sure sounds like a software problem to me, not switches. Based on the postings I see here, it seems to me that we are collectively starting to experience this problem with increasing frequency.

For those with the problem, can you let me know how long you have had the car? I've had mine since Aug 2008. I'm wondering if this could point to a software design issue that involves a "memory leak" leading to a gradual degradation over a period of months.

Tried things again in different sequences.

From a clean start (car powered off for a while), I can use all center console functions (NAV, phone, AM/FM/XM, Info, iPod) without problems.

The problems start when I use voice activation. Otherwise everything seems to be fine. As I mentioned in an earlier posting, when I press the voice activation button (on steering wheel), the system either makes a pregnant pause before responding or says "Please Wait". In either case, after waiting for 30 sec or more, the system usually comes back and takes my voice command. Sometimes, it never responds. Regardless of what happens after I initiate voice activation, I end up losing sound from my speakers and the iDrive knob doesn't work. No matter what I do afterward, I can't recover either function.

Note, that even if I turn off the car and turn it on again immediately, the iDrive is still dead but at least I have sound. The iDrive problem goes away if I turn the car off and leave it off for a while.

Anybody with a similar problem out there?

Bernie:

I purchased my V8 Genesis in November.

When I was having the lock-up problems in my audio system, everything was frozen except for the Nav which continued to work.

I still have the problem with the Voice Command after the system was replaced. To me, it seems to be a separate issue.

Keep the faith

By my count, that's about 9 owners (10 cars) on this website that have had these problems (I'm counting someone from a phone problem thread-same issues but he thought it was the phone).

Folks,

After getting my entire audio system replaced about two weeks ago, I still have the same problem. The dealer will report this to the tech line tomorrow and hopefully get back to me with an answer.

Sometimes, with no rhyme or reason the system locks up, i.e. no sound from the speakers, no AM/FM stations displayed and the CD player does not play as shown on the elapsed time meter. The XM Radio displays the station, no sound. The Nav works fine. My phone will make and receive calls, but no one can hear me and I hear no one. Very frustrating.

(I have a regular phone, no Blackberry or PDA.)

I was told that the audio system works through the A/C module, but my A/C works fine.
