  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Not happy with 1st need for service issue

Update for everyone: Was told that the switch was expected in today and had an appointment to make the swap. Called this morning and now the delivery date of the switches have been pushed back to Sunday, the 1st of August. Service rep told me last week that they would be able to pull out a switch from a car on the lot but apparently the 4 vehicles available "all have the same problem". Not sure if someone is pulling my leg here but this is starting to get frustrating. As previously stated, the wheel is stuck in the down position with the top of the wheel blocking the instrument guages.

Anyone else here a different story?

Not a service story (yet), but a similar failure with my 2010 3.8 sedan. When I move the position switch toward me or away from me, the steering wheel moves perhaps 1 cm and then there is soft click or a thunk and no additional motion is possible. The tilt action and range seem normal. But, once in a while, the memory function seems to not work (for the steering wheel only). Guess it has to go back.

UPDATE: I made a call to my dealer service dept this morning July 22,2010 checking the part availability. The service manager reported the part is expected to be available "First part of next week" and he will call me to set up appointment when the part arrives.

I will report back when I receive the call and the fix is made.

The first of this week has come and gone and not a call from my dealers service department. I will call the service department tomorrow to check the status of the back ordered part.:(

I had a similar problem a few months back. The telescopic action side of the micro switch gave up the ghost. Took it in to my dealer (Grayson Hyundai, Knoxville, TN)--they ID'd the problem, ordered the part (took 2-3 days to get in--took me a week to get the car to them)! and they installed it in about an hour. They also offered me ("they" was the service mgr.) a loaner several times, which I declined. (The loaner cars are typically Hyundai models). They had told me it would take about an hour to make the switcheroo, and I think it took just over an hour. I had a cup of coffee in a small waiting area and checked out some of the other Hyundai models in the showroom (and the one @ the receptionist's desk :>). I left the dealer a few minutes after they finished--haven't had a problem since. They told me while I was there that if the wheel gets pushed (via the switch--manually operated) to the end of it's limit, it could go out--and mine did. Getting it fixed wasn't a big deal, though.

I drive an early '09 V6 PP+. < 42K miles on her already! Still love it!

Dealer called today saying the parts are in.
Scheduled an appointment for fix tommorow. I'm looking forward to getting this issue fixed.

I called today and was told that only one switch came in and that it would take 2 to complete the job... this after being told that they had ordered 25 initially. Now they are saying that the parts won't be released until Wednesday and that the service department wouldn't get it until Monday. Is it me or is the BS being laid on pretty thick here?

BTW... Just called a second local dealership and was told that they could order the part and have it in within a day. Tempted to take it there but they do not offer a loaner.

If a loaner is a deal breaker...

I'm sure you can get an inexpensive rental, especially if dealer B can repair as you state. Small price to pay for having your car repaired timely...not to mention no BS!!

I had mine changed a couple months ago. Took the tech only about an hour to do the job. Said that he had done others also.

BTW, the new part did not correct the steering wheel from forgetting its set position. I now just live with it. I sometimes just shut the steering wheel memory off as I have no problem getting in and out of the car, as long as the seat still goes back.

Hey guys its a car, take a chill pill it's not the end of the world.

I agree.. sort of.

Once you've had the Lexus service level of care, or other well organized service departments, no matter how much the Hyundai service folks smile and remain polite, it is hard to come down to a level of service that every part other than oil and tires... are on back order.

Dealer called today saying the parts are in.
Scheduled an appointment for fix tomorrow. I'm looking forward to getting this issue fixed.

Visited my dealer 1 hour prior to appointment today anxious to have the tilt-less steering wheel corrected. The early arrival allowed time for 1st OIL change at 3600 miles.

After completing the oil change the young service tech began taking the lower dash apart so he could get to the defective tilt switch for replacement. Approx 50 minutes later the service manager finds me in the waiting room to inform me my Genesis is a later build and has a different switch arrangement which is integrated into the steering column. They will need to replace the steering column. He put me in a loaner and says hope to have my car fixed in a day.

I purchased Apriil 10, 2010, vehicle had 6 miles on the od.
Is my dealer service department feeding me BS concerning the problem.

My question or statement to the service manager was, so this would mean my car could have been repaired several weeks ago when I first brought it in for this problem. A smile and a mumbling grunt was his answer.:(

My steering wheel has a mind of its own too. It always resets lower than its supposed to. I am going to ask the dealer to disable the "easy exit" function so it just stays where I set it. I know on tech package vehicles you can set this through the DIS but my car doesn't have tech.

If you have the Tech package on your vehicle you can go into the car settings menu and turn off the easy exit function yourself, just an FYI. If your not sure how to adjust it then please send me a PM and I would be happy to run you through the menu system to where the option is located.

I fully agree that this part should be of little wait time, it should just be ramped up in production by Hyundai unless the little part is something coming from what little non-Korean parts are in the vehicle. In that case they should be all over the person that is producing that part to increase production of that part until the demand is met to fix everyone's car that is experiencing this problem.

No car company is perfect, not Lexus, not BMW, not Nissan/Infiniti. I have owned at least one of each of them and each has had some sort of technical problems that have had them in for repairs more then once. They do however offer you a loaner/rental car without any hesitation until the problem is corrected.

I would definitely consider it a safety issue not being able to have the steering wheel at a position that is comfortable to drive in. Even Nissan when I owned my Maxima was always ready with a loaner/rental when it had to be in for an extended stay to fix whatever was ailing it.

Thanks, I guess I wasn't clear. My car doesn't have the tech/Nav package. I don't mind waiting for the part, I just don't believe that the function can't be changed on models without tech. If you think about it, the easy exit causes a lot of wear and tear on the steering wheel motors, etc. I am leasing, but if that breaks out of warranty imagine the repair bill.

On my previous car the dealer could change all kinds of things by plugging a tool into the car. Things like headlight delay, unlocking preferences, etc.

Picked up my Genesis today, REPAIRED! Nice to have the steering wheel tilt feature working again. No squeezing my lap or blocking the odometer .:) The steering column was replaced.
