  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

When getting on the accelerator pretty hard, say a 0-60 run or hauling butt down an on ramp, I have noticed a quite pungent odor. I can't quite put my finger on it but I would say it most resembles an exhaust type smell. It's bad enough that passengers will frequently question the smell. The smell is evident before braking so that is not the problem.

I've noticed the odor since the car was new. Dealer originally told me it was due to the stuff they spray on the underside for shipment. I have over 4000 miles on the car and if anything it is getting worse.

I took the car in last week for other issues and the dealer tells me they can not reproduce. That's BS so I'm taking it back this week to take a tech for a ride.

Before I go back though I would like to know if anyone else out there notices the same type of smell when accelerating hard. The odor is most obvious when the sunroof is open.

I have never noticed a smell like your describing. The under spray should be gone after 4k. Keep us in the loop.

We'd really need to know a bit more about the odor. Is it a sulphur smell, like from eggs? That would indicate gas/catalytic converter issues, maybe the cat is bad, or the engine is running rich. Is there excessive soot on the tail pipes? Do you typically buy one brand of gasoline?

Is the smell similar to burning plastic?

I am having the same issue, it smells like coolant burning. I don't notice it outside the car when it is parked and running. I also don't notice it when I keep it on re-circulate mode, only after the car is warmed up and it does seem to get worse when I accelerate as you indicated in your post. I am taking it into the dealer tomorrow and wondered if you have been able to solve this problem. I have 700 miles on the car and have noticed it since day 1.
